“So the principles we’ve set down are guides to progress. We claim spiritual progress rather than spiritual perfection. Why do you think we celebrate successes, little victories? You know, if you want to train a fighter up, you give him some easy ones before you put him in the ring with a heavyweight. So it isn’t about anything you achieved, but for people like me to have a thirty-day medallion was an insurmountable obstacle. The last medallion I ever took was a thirty-day one because I think the least interesting thing about me is my sober date.”
