Washington Governor Bob Ferguson to Sign Bill Imposing State Income Tax on High Earners
Starting January 1, 2028, individuals earning over $1 million annually will pay a 9.9% state income tax in Washington, a state that has never had a state income tax before. The bill, which has already passed the Senate and is moving through the House, includes provisions to support working families, cut taxes for small businesses, and provide free breakfast and lunch for all public school students. It also expands the Working Families Tax Credit and gives relief to small businesses, while investing heavily in childcare and early learning programs.
