Renys Department Stores: A Maine Icons 77-Year Journey
Renys, a beloved Maine department store chain, has been a staple for 77 years, alongside lobster rolls and L.L.Bean. Founded by Robert Henry Reny, or R.H., in 1949, the family-run business now operates 18 locations across the state.
R.H. Reny, born in Biddeford in 1923, built the business from the ground up, drawing on his familys business background and retail experience. Despite a challenging first winter, Maine residents embraced Renys for its practical goods and community feel.
Reny became a vocal advocate for local businesses, leading the Maine Merchants Association, fighting shoplifting laws, and opposing Sunday store openings to protect family time and tourism. The chain expanded throughout the 60s and 70s, reaching places like Farmington and Dexter.
Reny was recognized for his entrepreneurial spirit, earning retailer of the year in 1981 and entrepreneur of the year in 1988. He passed away in 2009, but his legacy lives on through his sons and grandchildren, who continue to run the business with a personal touch. Every March 23rd, employees celebrate his birthday with ice cream, honoring his motto: life is short, eat dessert first.
