Show Notes

For over three decades, the Portland History Docent Training Program has empowered local volunteers to lead tours at eleven historic sites in Portland, South Portland, and Peaks Island. With a diverse range of sites, including the Portland Observatory and Victoria Mansion, volunteers share the areas rich history with visitors. The program, led by Marjorie Getz for sixteen years, offers an eleven-week course each year, attracting over sixty students who pay just fifty dollars. Docents not only guide tours but also contribute to site maintenance and restoration. Notable volunteers include Bill Gousse, a retired pharmacist, and newcomers like historians and nurses. The program covers a wide range of topics, sparking excitement among students from various backgrounds. The next training begins in February, with details available at portlandhistorydocents.org.
