MaineHealths Experts Lead National Effort to Improve HIV Care for Homeless Populations
MaineHealth is spearheading a national initiative to enhance HIV care for homeless individuals, a challenging group to reach medically. Six of their top experts have been appointed to an advisory council by the federal Health Resources and Services Administration HIV AIDS Bureau. The program, led by Dr. Alex Keuroghlian, aims to improve HIV treatment rates among homeless individuals, who currently have lower suppression rates and higher risks of health issues and virus transmission. The approach involves street medicine, where treatment is brought directly to encampments and other ground-level locations. Over the next four years, these advisors will develop rollout plans, test new care methods, and expand the effort nationwide.
