S1 Ep 48Does your podcast have to be niche?
Finding a podcast niche when you're starting out can be useful because it can help people find your show. If you're not someone with an existing profile chances are potential listeners won't be searching for you. So ideally you want your podcast to be in a niche they're already interested in.Having a defined podcast niche can also help convince listeners to give your show a try when they do find you because there's more chance they'll understand the concept. There's nothing compelling about "a general show about stuff" from someone you've never heard of. But if you can sell people on a specific idea they'll be able to quickly work out if it's for them.Finding a niche for your podcast isn't about being so specific you shut people out or limiting yourself so you've got nothing to talk about. It's about finding a way to stand out in a very crowded podcast market.Check out the full episode show notes: https://rachelcorbett.com.au/podcast-niche/About me...My name is Rachel Corbett and I've worked professionally for almost two decades in radio and podcasting. S1 Ep 45Why you should design an ideal listener for your podcast
When you’re starting out and you don’t have any listeners, it's hard to make decisions about what content would suit them best.Designing your ideal listener can help you make decisions about things like the length of your podcast or what kind of topics you should cover because you've got someone in mind.If you don't design your ideal listener you're probably going to make decisions based off what you want and you're not the audience. So how do you work out who your ideal listener is?Check out the full episode show notes: https://rachelcorbett.com.au/ideal-listener/About me...My name is Rachel Corbett and I've worked professionally for almost two decades in radio and podcasting. S1 Ep 43How to make podcasting easier with seasons
If you're new to podcasting you might be worried that once you start you'll be stuck churning out episodes every week for the rest of your life. While consistency is key, breaking your show into seasons can be a great way to take some of the pressure off and keep your podcast interesting.Just like television, seasons in podcasting are a way to separate your content into smaller self-contained blocks. Each season could have a different focus like Gimlet's podcast, Startup. Or you could do the same show and break it up into batches like I do with Lady Startup. So how do podcast seasons work and are they right for your show?Check out the full episode show notes: https://rachelcorbett.com.au/podcast-seasons/About me...My name is Rachel Corbett and I've worked professionally for almost two decades in radio and podcasting. S1 Ep 42Do you have to pay your podcast guests?
If you want to interview guests on your podcast you might be thinking "Holy crap! Do I have to pay all these people?"Lucky for you (and your bank balance) the expectation with podcast guests is they (usually) won't get paid.So how do you make sure guests will still want to come on your podcast even if they're doing it for free?Check out the full episode show notes: https://rachelcorbett.com.au/pay-podcast-guests/About me...My name is Rachel Corbett and I've worked professionally for almost two decades in radio and podcasting. Working with a podcast co-host can be one of life's great joys....if it's the right person. If it's the wrong person it can be as fun as performing surgery on yourself with a corkscrew. When you're starting out, having someone to bounce off can seem like the easiest option. If you're wondering whether to include episode numbers in the title of each episode, let me save you the virtual ink. There are of course some cases where this might be necessary but for the most part you want to enter your episode numbers in the back end of your podcast host rather than in the title of your show.In this episode I explain why.Check out the full episode show notes: https://rachelcorbett.com.au/episode-numbers/About me...My name is Rachel Corbett and I've worked professionally for almost two decades in radio and podcasting. S1 Ep 34Why you need to wear headphones
Setting aside the obvious need for a microphone and something to record on, the one thing in your podcast kit you can't live without is a pair of headphones. And that goes for everyone whose dulcet tones will be featured on your show. This is obviously a given when you're interviewing a guest via Skype or Zencastr because without headphones they won't be able to hear you. But if you're chatting to someone face-to-face or you have a co-host, everyone will need their own pair.If your guest wants to bring their own headphones for the podcast, earbuds will do fine. But it's always good to carry a spare pair just in case.Just remember, if you're going to supply headphones make sure you get ones that go over a guest's ears rather than into them because some people are funny about having a strangers ear wax in their earholes...understandably.Check out the full episode show notes: https://rachelcorbett.com.au/why-you-need-to-wear-headphones/About me...My name is Rachel Corbett and I've worked professionally for almost two decades in radio and podcasting. S1 Ep 33How to attract high-profile guests to your podcast
Most people think if they get a few high-profile podcast guests their audience numbers will skyrocket. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case. Not only do guests with big profiles not guarantee a spike in numbers they're often difficult to get on if you don't have existing relationships to tap into. So, if this type of podcast guest is something you desperately want on your show. And you know it's right for your content (not just something you're doing for more listeners) in this episode I go through some important things you need to think about.Check out the full episode show notes: https://rachelcorbett.com.au/high-profile-podcast-guests/About me...My name is Rachel Corbett and I've worked professionally for almost two decades in radio and podcasting. S1 Ep 32Why you need to define your podcast concept
Unless you've got an existing profile it's very hard to grow an audience with a podcast that's general. That's because when people are searching for shows they're usually drawn to concepts they're interested in or people they know.If they do happen to stumble across your show you want them to know exactly what it is in a couple of seconds or they'll probably walk right on by.In this episode I take you through why it's better to be specific than general when you're thinking about your show idea.Check out the full episode show notes: https://rachelcorbett.com.au/define-podcast-concept/About me...My name is Rachel Corbett and I've worked professionally for almost two decades in radio and podcasting. S1 Ep 27How to make your podcast look good on your website

So, it’s important to think about the design of your podcast player.Luckily this isn't something you have to put together yourself because your podcast host will have one but which one do you choose?Check out the full episode show notes: https://rachelcorbett.com.au/how-to-make-your-podcast-look-good-on-your-website/About me...My name is Rachel Corbett and I've worked professionally for almost two decades in radio and podcasting. If you want listeners to keep checking in with your show you need to set an appointment with them so they know when to expect your content. That means you need to release your podcast on the same day every week.Growing an audience is all about building a relationship and if you want people to keep coming back they have to know where to find you.Showing your audience you're committed to them builds trust and trust is what encourages people to recommend your show. It's also what ultimately gives you the opportunity to monetise what you’ve created.Check out the full episode show notes: https://rachelcorbett.com.au/when-to-release-your-podcast/About me...My name is Rachel Corbett and I've worked professionally for almost two decades in radio and podcasting. S1 Ep 24How to make editing easier when you’re recording
Editing your podcast takes up a huge amount of time so you don't want to make the process any longer than it needs to be. Or, heaven forbid, get to the editing stage and realise your audio is unusable. There are a lot of things you can do when you're recording a podcast to ensure, when you’re slicing away like Edward Scissorhands, you’re not thinking “This is a nightmare!”Check out the full episode show notes: https://rachelcorbett.com.au/how-to-make-editing-easier/About me...My name is Rachel Corbett and I've worked professionally for almost two decades in radio and podcasting. S1 Ep 22How to improve your podcast with 'segments'
Some people think there’s only one way to do a podcast...open the microphones and talk until you run out of things to say. And while there are some very successful shows that subscribe to that formula it’s not the only way to do a show.Chatting non-stop might seem like the easiest option when you’re new to podcasting. But just because you’re a beginner doesn’t mean you can’t think more creatively about how to deliver your content.Breaking your show up into podcast segments can be a great way to keep it interesting and make hosting much easier.Check out the full episode show notes: https://rachelcorbett.com.au/podcast-segments/About me...My name is Rachel Corbett and I've worked professionally for almost two decades in radio and podcasting. S1 Ep 21What's the difference between a USB and XLR mic?
The letters USB and XLR refer to the way a microphone connects to the device that's recording your words. That device could be a computer if you're recording straight into audio software, or a portable recording device like a Zoom.Whichever way you decide to record your podcast you need to know which microphone is right for you, so you don't buy something that won't connect to anything. So what's the difference and which one should you choose?Check out the full episode show notes: https://rachelcorbett.com.au/usb-xlr-podcast-microphones/About me...My name is Rachel Corbett and I've worked professionally for almost two decades in radio and podcasting. S1 Ep 19Should you conduct a pre-interview with your podcast guest?
Conducting a pre-interview might seem like a pain in the butt when you've already got so much to do for each episode but it can really help you get the most out of your podcast guest. If you spend time during the pre-interview working out the best stories and advice your guest will be able to offer, you’ll be more able to focus the interview on those areas.Often you can get a lot of this from research. But if there’s not much online about your guest a quick phone chat can be a simpler way of honing in on the interesting bits so you don’t waste time when you’re recording. The last thing you want to do is book 30 minutes with someone only to only get to the good stuff 20 minutes in. A pre-interview can help you avoid that.Check out the full episode show notes: https://rachelcorbett.com.au/podcast-guest-pre-interview/About me...My name is Rachel Corbett and I've worked professionally for almost two decades in radio and podcasting. When you're wondering how to grow your podcast audience, high-profile guests can feel like a silver bullet.
