Neve Portico 5017 Preamp Review / Test

How does the Neve Portico 5017 Sound? Awesome. This "mobile" preamp has a ton of gain, a silk circuit to add some coloration, a high pass filter, a compressor with a 2:1 ratio, a noise floor is better than -127dBA, and a D.I. section. This thing is awesome, but the control over the features is pretty limited and at $1400 it's a pretty penny.Buy the Daking Mic Pre One (Affiliate Links)Amazon: https://geni.us/rnd5017Sweetwater: https://sweetwater.sjv.io/rnd5017Thomann: https://www.thomannmusic.com/rupert_neve_designs_5017.htm?offid=1&affid=2060Buy the Focusrite 2i2 (3rd Gen)- Same Performance as 18i20 (Affiliate Link)Amazon:  https://geni.us/2i32rdSweetwater: https://imp.i114863.net/k6g4dB&H Photo: https://bhpho.to/42lcWDFThomann: https://www.thomann.de/intl/focusrite_scarlett_2i2_3rd_gen.htm?offid=1&affid=206000:00 - Intro / Pricing00:26 - What’s in the Box00:37 - Build Quality 00:57 - Walkthrough02:16 - Specifications03:02 - Shure SM7b Mic Test (No Cloudlifter or Fethead) 04:36 - Preamp vs. Interface Preamp05:25 - Comparison to Other Preamps06:49 - High Pass Filter Demo07:16 - Silk Circuit Demo07:46 - Compressor Demo08:25 - Music Test (Drum Machine, Electric Guitar, D.I. Shure MoveMic Review / Test

Video & HQ Audio: https://podcastage.com/rev/movemicCurtis' Review w/ Distance Test: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruRHrIGvHXUToday I review Shure's new fully wireless consumer lav system, the Movemic. This has a tiny transmitter with a bulit in mic that offers a smoother and less bright sound compared to it's competitors. It also offers real time processing to add noise reduction, high pass filter, compression, and EQ. The transmitter can also connect to your phone via bluetooth but I found that quality to be lower than the sound quality via the receiver. Video: https://youtu.be/t8X-Is7naeUToday i review the Warm Audio WA251, a clone of the legendary Telefunken ELAM 251. Razer Seiren V3 Mini Review / Test

This is similar to the original Seiren Mini, but with the addition of a capacitive mute button and improved conversion up to 24-bit 96kHz. Sony ECM-LV1 Lav Mic Review & Test

Video & HQ Audio: https://podcastage.com/rev/ecmlv1Today I review a $30 lavalier microphone from Sony. This is very similar to their older ECM-CS3, but it sounds a bit brighter. It is a stereo lav mic, it has a pretty healthy sensitivity, it does pick up a little bit of room tone, but the top end boost gives it clarity even while clipped to the collar of your shirt. The build quality leaves a bit to be desired, the cable is kind of short, and the top end can be sharp if your sound source is already bright. Movo LV-1 Lav Mic Review

Video & HQ Audio: https://podcastage.com/rev/lv1Today I review a $13 lavalier microphone kit. This seems to be a similar built to a mic I reviewed 7 years ago and it has the sam functionality. Shure SM7dB Review / Test

Today I review new Shure SM7dB. Does this improve the noise floor of your recordings? Is it worth the money? Should you buy it? In this review I compare it to the SM7b as well as a bunch of other microphones so you can hear it. Other than that it sounds like an SM7b just with a hotter output, so if that's something that sounds appealing it may work for you, but keep your expecations on low noise recording in check. Electro Voice RE520 Review / Test

Video: https://youtu.be/wnEGw0_zjGcToday I review a handheld condenser mic from Electro Voice the RE520. This thing sounds like a brighter RE20 with a bit of heft in the bass, relatively neutral mid section and then a bump in the top end which offers some nice clarity without sounding too overboosted. It does great with handling noise rejection and pretty well with background noise. It suffers from plosives and if the grill is removed it becomes ungrounded and hums. Behringer MIC300 Tube Preamp & Limiter Review / Test

Video: https://youtu.be/Rbr_A3Pqj4EToday I walkthrough, explain, test and review the budget Behringer MIC300 tube preamp. This offer +60dB of gain with +10dB on the output stage, and the main thing that drew me to it, an analog limiter (which is fine, but not great). If you're looking for a fantastic sounding preamp with tons of clean gain, this is not for you. It's a relatively distorted, slightly noisy tube preamp that's a little bit of fun.Buy the Behringer MIC300 (Affiliate Links)Amazon: https://geni.us/mic300Thomann: https://www.thomannmusic.com/behringer_mic300_tube_ultragain.htm?offid=1&affid=2060Buy the Rode NT1 Kit (Affiliate)Amazon: http://geni.us/rodent1Sweetwater: http://bit.ly/2Xrwl62B&H Photo: https://bhpho.to/3OTT0VnThomann: https://www.thomannmusic.com/rode_nt1_kit.htm?offid=1&affid=2060Buy the Focusrite 2i2 (3rd Gen)- Same Performance as 18i20 (Affiliate Link)Amazon: https://geni.us/2i32rdSweetwater: https://imp.i114863.net/k6g4dB&H Photo: https://bhpho.to/42lcWDFThomann: https://www.thomann.de/intl/focusrite_scarlett_2i2_3rd_gen.htm?offid=1&affid=206000:00 - Intro / Pricing00:30 - What’s in the Box00:40 - Build Quality / Walkthrough01:12 - Specifications02:05 - Shure SM7b Mic Test (No Cloudlifter or Fethead)03:15 - Preamp Gain Noise Test 03:56 - Limiter Test 05:49  - Preamp vs. Interface Preamp06:29 - Music Test08:17 - Pros & Cons09:16 - Opinion on Pre10:08 - Recommendation11:25  - Outro

Shure MVX2U Interface Review / Demo / Explained

Video: https://youtu.be/EaEf2YX_tnUToday I walkthrough, explain, test and review the new Shure MVX2u. This is the smallest interface I've reviewed and it offers +60dB of gain as well as Digital Signal Processing such as EQ, Compression, and Limiting. The preamp is on the noisier side of things and as of early-September 2023 there is an issue with low frequency sounds increasing the noise floor of the device.  Buy the Shure MVX2u (Affiliate Links)Amazon: https://geni.us/mvx2uSweetwater: https://sweetwater.sjv.io/mvx2uB&H Photo: https://bhpho.to/45D82VhThomann: https://www.thomannmusic.com/shure_motiv_mvx2u.htm?offid=1&affid=2060Buy the Rode NT1 Kit (Affiliate)Amazon: http://geni.us/rodent1Sweetwater: https://imp.i114863.net/nt1B&H Photo: https://bhpho.to/3OTT0VnThomann: https://www.thomannmusic.com/rode_nt1_kit.htm?offid=1&affid=2060Buy the Shure SM7b (Affiliate Link)Amazon: https://geni.us/shuresm7bSweetwater: https://imp.i114863.net/sm7bB&H Photo: https://bhpho.to/3qrIZVThomann: https://www.thomann.de/intl/shure_sm_7b_studiomikro.htm?offid=1&affid=2060As an affiliate I earn from qualifying purchases.00:00 - Intro / Pricing / Disclosure 00:31 - Signal Chain for Testing00:30 - What’s in the Box00:44 - Build Quality01:19 - Specifications02:14 - Shure SM7b Mic Test (No Cloudlifter or Fethead)03:27 - Preamp Noise Level Test  05:03 - Software Auto-Level Walkthrough10:28 - Software Processing Walkthrough15:37 - Are Settings Stored on the Device?16:45 - Pros & Cons19:43 - Recommendation21:32  - Outro

Audio Technica AT2020USB-X Review / Test

Video & HQ Audio: https://podcastage.com/rev/at2020usbxToday I review a new USB mic from Audio Techncia, the 2020USB-X. This is an update to the 2020USB+ and it's offering higher conversion 24-bit/96kHz and it adds a new mute button. It comes with a desktop stand as well which the original did not, but it abandons the standard 2020 mount that the original USB+used in lieu of a 1/4" threading on the bottom. It offers a clear sound that leans into the territory of being a bit harsh, and it picks up a bit more room tone and reflections than I'd prefer. However, in a world of decreasing plug and play mics, it offers a pretty decent sound for those who need the limited functionality. sE Electronics V2 Switch Review / Test

HQ Audio Of Review: https://podcastage.com/rev/sev2Video: https://youtu.be/EomPiDMrbFgToday i review the sE Electronics V2 Switch, a new budget dynamic mic that comes in at around $50. This thing has a great sound that is controlled in the lowend, forward in the upper mids but not overdone, and somewhat tame in the treble and air. The one big draw back to this in my opinion is the handling noise which is improved greatly on the sE V7 which is 2x the price. Sennheiser Profile USB Review / Test

Video & HQ Audio: https://podcastage.com/rev/profileusb Today I review a new USB mic from Sennheiser, the Profile. This thing offers an inoffensive sound that will work for people who don't want to think about audio, but I don't think it sounds amazing. The low end is controlled, the mids are a bit forward but not overly nasally, and the top end is a bit relaxed compared to USB condensers around the same price. The feature set is also really nice if you don't want software on your computer, and the build quality feels great. sE Electronics sE7 Review / Test

Today i review the sE Electronics sE7, a small diaphragm condenser which offers a nice low end, neutral mids and a lifted top end which gives you some liveliness but it's not overdone. Like most SDCs it doesn't do great with plosives, but does pretty well with off axis coloration. I also think this mic can exagerate a little bit of sibilance. This mic has a controlled lowend, a mid forward sound, and a little bit of grain on the top end (mainly in XLR mode). This offers Digital Signal Processing that is stored on mic so you can use it on computers without Rode's software, and the pop filter works extremely well. It doesn't handle shocks too well, and the XLR port is inactive when you have the mic connected over USB. Fifine K669 Dynamic Mic Review / Test

Today I review a budget dynamic mic which costs only $37, the Fifine K669d. This is a very basic microphone with no switches or buttons, and a single XLR port on the rear. Audio Technica AT2040USB Review / Test

Today I review a new USB dynamic mic from Audio Technica, the AT2040 USB. This is a plug and play device with a great mute button, a headphone volume control, mix dial to mix zero latency monitoring and computer playback, and a high pass filter. It offers a very upper mid/presence forward sound that can sound a bit artificial. It's not my favorite sounding, but for plug and play simple to use devices, if you don't care much about the sound, it's pretty great. Lewitt Pure Tube Review / Test

Today I review the new Pure Tube from Lewitt. This thing offers a tamer top end compared to Lewitt's solid state mics and more detail and articulation than a lot of other tube mics. The studio set also comes with one of the best shockmounts I've ever used, and it has a self noise of only 7dBA which is crazy for a tube mic.Buy the Lewitt Pure Tube (Affiliate Links)Amazon: https://geni.us/puretubeSweetwater: https://sweetwater.sjv.io/puretubeB&H Photo: https://bhpho.to/42KSX1vThomann: https://www.thomann.de/intl/lewitt_pure_tube_studio_set.htm?offid=1&affid=2060Buy the Focusrite 2i2 (3rd Gen)- Same Performance as 18i20 (Affiliate Links)Amazon: https://geni.us/2i32rdSweetwater: https://imp.i114863.net/k6g4dB&H Photo: https://bhpho.to/42lcWDFThomann: https://www.thomann.de/intl/focusrite_scarlett_2i2_3rd_gen.htm?offid=1&affid=2060NOTE (FULL DISCLOSURE): As an associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. Today I review a budget dynamic mic which costs between $70 and $80, the Fifine K688. This is an XLR & USB mic with zero latency monitoring and it offers a pretty decent sound. Mojave MA-200 Review / Test

Today I review a tube mic from MOJAVE, the MA-200. This is a cardioid only condenser mic and it has a sound that seems fitting for modern pop with a clear mid section and airy top end.
