The Truth About Ratings and Reviews

In the world of podcasting, many people believe that receiving positive ratings and reviews will boost their overall discoverability and help their podcasts succeed. While it might be reassuring for a podcaster to receive positive feedback, the truth is that ratings and reviews may not necessarily bring a significant increase in listener engagement. Instead, podcasters should focus more on creating valuable content and building relationships with their audience.

I had to have Alex, from PodPro's pipe in on this RANT. He pointed out that while ratings and reviews might feel good for podcasters on an emotional level, research from Apple shows they don't actually contribute to a podcast's ranking. For podcasters seeking true growth, it's crucial to recognize the difference between a feel-good metric and a genuine means of driving listener engagement. So don't just take my word for it!

Don't Make Ratings and Reviews Your CTA

While making ratings and reviews of your call-to-action (CTA) might seem like a good idea, doing so may not be the best way to attract more passionate listeners or drive user engagement. Instead, try encouraging listeners to share episodes with their friends, subscribe to a newsletter, or engage with a community. These tactics can be much more effective in converting casual listeners into dedicated fans.

During the podcast, even Alex agreed that making ratings and reviews the only CTA may not be the most effective strategy for audience growth. They recommend exploring other means of engagement and focusing on building a community that can eventually lead to attracting more committed listeners.
