Ep 62Fish Nerds
The Fish Nerds podcast has a tagline, “Best fishing podcast that is always interesting, usually funny & mostly true.” This week Clay comes on to has us put the Fish Nerds Show under the microscope. Here is What We Liked Great branding. Everything seems well coordinated between the website and the podcast. You instantly know that you take fishing seriously, but not so much yourself (and this show is going to be fun). Hugo's cooking segments were “Super Real” and we loved the quality from a field reporter. The “Take one for the team” mention of mercury in the fish was humorous. Clay does a great job of sending people to his Facebook Group to keep the conversation going. Loved that his guest was someone he didn't agree with and brought him on to have a dialogue. You got to the content quickly. Some Thing That Need Polishing A couple of dead links on the website If Hugo could paint a picture a bit more with his words Clay refers to “We” when it's really only him. He has to be careful to not make sponsors sound like “the bad guys.” You might want to change the word “Blog” to podcast (or make two categories and have both) You might consider getting some swag made at Tee Spring as you have great quotes from your show that could make great swag There were a couple of Facebook pings during the recording. At times the volume was a little unbalanced (check out www.auphonic.com) Don't forget about the new people (or people outside the US) to explain the details. Ep 60Toastmasters 101
Toastmasters 101 is a podcast for those people looking to know more about Toastmasters. Think if it is a beginning course for toastmasters. Kim Krajci, is the host and she also does the onthetablepodcasts.com (which for more advanced toastmasters) Here are the things we liked I like that what you’re reading is not in the show notes. Liked real life example of leaning on one arm I like that you showed your own struggles Love the actionable items, like “take the role of the toastmaster of a meeting” Love the production, gavel tap & “meeting adjourned” I like the light heated Tease Some Things That Need Tweaked There is nothing wrong with reading your podcast unless it sounds like you're reading. Most of the time you can't tell, but you had a few glitches. Where can I contact you or find more info? Where do I go from here? What if I am not in a Toastmasters group? You mentioned the manual. Ep 59This is Rammy
This week we look at This is Rammy a podcast that is here to keep you informed and entertained about news and events in and around Ramsbottom, that’s the one line description right there. Lee is a super nice guy. Here Is What We Liked Good audio, and the website is nice and clean. We loved the hyper local focus. Lee could become THE source for local news. Lee shared some short stories about what was going on with this life. We both felt like he was talking directly to us. He put the personal stuff at the end for the die-hard fans. He did a good job of “Shouting out” his audience The events section is a great resouece Things He Could Tweak He was a little stiff (announcer-ish) at the beginning. We both thought he should invest in some stickers to promote the show. It's a touch call because he doesn't need to state the obvious, but there may be people listening that need those details. We both would've appreciated a way to help the person who had the fire Maybe give a little more details on the owner of the restaurant (again, hard to balance) Promote your website address a bit more to help drive people to your website. Maybe give bonus content to the email list. Today Eric and Dave review 3H2 Humans which according to their website a 3Hs Human is: The name 3H2 HUMANS is a shorthand, mathematical way to express 3H x 2 = 6H. Ep 57Punched Up
Punched up is a podcast by Michael Malone and this is not your typical comedian interview show. Mark takes the stories that are only heard in the “Green room” backstage at comedy clubs and brings them to life in a well produced format similar to a style you might hear at NPR. The Good Things This show is so well edited, and produced. We liked the quick into and how he got right into the story The website has a simple/clean design, and the occasional colors make things stand out. There are lots of opportunities to subscribe on every episode. Things That Could Use a Tweaking In the event someone downloads your episode (which Mark had turned off) you are missing the ID3 tag for the image. Eric thought the music at times should be used more as a transition, not to be used to set the mood (there are times when that works, and other times when it becomes distracting). Be more specific with your call to action. If you want tweets, give your Twitter handle, make it easy to subscribe. Mark is using Feedburner, which was a good idea in 2006. It does occasionally stall, and its not needed (it causes some issues every now and then). Ep 56Germ Free Zone
Today we talk with Bruce from the Germ Free Zone. Bruce has done something no other podcaster has done. He has brought Dave and Erik in before he even launched his show. He wanted feedback before he gets into iTunes. Here is what we found: Good Stuff: Bruce has a great intro, his kids are cute, and his passion is obvious. Bruce has great fats, and great personal stories that really sucked you in. Things That Could Be Improved: His use of music throughout the episode became distracting. He needs to get his kids to slow down when they read. Work on the layout of the show. It might make better as a shorter show with a great tease about the next show. A little focus on the germ free zone, and the membership site, and the complaint form. Bruce's show will be coming soonMentioned in this episode:Is Your Show GrowingI took my twenty years of podcasting experience and put them into a PDF for you. Ep 55VR Workforce Studio
Today Dave and Eric take a look at the VR Workforce Studio. Here are the things we feel are working: Like the highlight intro and creative intro. It got our attention, had a certain “what’s coming next” with the changing voices. Nice job getting guests to tell stories. Very descriptive in Rick’s intro, and we knew what to expect. “Tell us about the view from the passenger seat” great question Great pace, and you keep things moving. Here are some things we feel could be improved: You introduced George's story, got me teased in and then went to the other guest. Music in middle of George’s answer was a little distracting. Music between George and Mary sounded like we were going into another story Your headline, “George Dennehy and his rise to stardom as a guitarist and singer” has no mention that he has no arms Dave felt a little lost going to Mary's story and then back to George. At time some radio cliche's snuck in. Ep 53Mind Drippings
Doug Salamone aims to bring interesting stories and interviews with points of view from a different mindset on his Mind Drippings show. The world needs innovative, artistic, entrepreneurial disruption to develop and evolve. Today Eric and Dave go over his episode, his audio, and his website. Here is what we found: What is Working The intro was nicely produced and made a great first impression. It sets the stage and let's people know what to expect. He made some really good points, and worked in some stories to help make points The website has a clean interface The podcast feels like a discussion rather than a question/answer session. Great logo What Could Be Tweaked Doug could work on starting out the show by introducing his guest and really explaining who the person is, what they bring to the table, and why they are on the show. Then the first question could push the conversation in the direction Doug is looking to go. At time his transitions from topic to topic was a bit choppy. There is no reason to announce that you are changing topics (just change topics). There are no ID3 tags in his mp3 file. While the mp3 file will still download the file, you can look like a hack when someone listens in certain programs. You image is set to a resolution that can't be viewed by web browsers. Change the image to 90 DPI, and I would resize it (it's currently thousands of pixles). The paragraphs above the subscribe buttons didn't quite fit. There were two “About” pages, it might make more sense to combine these with the top section being about the show, and a second paragraph about the host. Great discussion of the history of work and the possible future. It might've been nicer to have more useful info that listeners can put to work today Dave felt that the show could've used a bit more editing to get rid of what he felt was “excessive” ums. If the goal of the show is to build your email list, you might want to add incentives to get people to sign up. Here are the things Craig is Doing Well: Like the way you introduce both hostsLike the way you set up the show and what is to comeI like the incorporation of listener audioStart with positives then work to mistakes. Nobody like to be critiqued. Make it friendly.Great use of links to previous episodesLike the music transitionsI like the Spanish words next to the English words in the show notes Here are some things that Craig Might Consider: Reinforce the main topic through the episodeA few different calls-to-action with no valuable benefit. Ep 51Under Ten Fitness: Back For More
Today we talk about the Under ten Fitness (itunes link). This is a short podcast (under ten minutes – get it?) that has a little bit of news and the talks about something in the health and fitness area. Things They Are Doing Right: Nice job wrapping up the tip & delivering it to one person rather than a group of listeners Nice job of focusing on a key take away Things They Could Tweak Be sure to drive traffic back to their your website, and mention the website in your show. Work on a website. The classic podcast system is 1. A Self-hosted wordpress website 2. Using Libsyn, or blubrry.com for your media host (and yes you need a media host). 3. Have great looking custom artwork 4. Have an easy to navigate website. They using podomatic for a media host (one of the worst), and their website is confusing. Ep 50Bear Arms Show
About the Bear Arms Show: The Bear Arms Show is your weekly source for 2nd Amendment news and commentary delivered in a fun, entertaining way. The focus is on efforts to protect, and restore, the right to keep and bear arms. Also featured are interviews with leaders and newsmakers in the 2nd Amendment community. The show is hosted by brothers, John and Michael Willett. They are veterans of the U.S Military and lifelong firearms enthusiasts. You can find them at www.beararmsshow.com/ and in iTunes and Stitcher. The Good Parts: The intro and outro along with some of the sound effects and production elements were great (Courtesy of Music Radio Creative). You both have great insights and experience with this topic. As brothers you have a natural chemistry. The website and the audio quality were fine. The branding with the bears is nice icing on the cake. Put that panda on a Tee Shirt! Things That Could Be Tweaked: It took you four minutes to introduce what was coming on the show. You were missing the “Title” ID3 tag. Work on your transitions. You don't need to announce that you are transitioning, just transition. Figure out what you want to say in each topic. Then once you've hit all our points, you just figure out how to transition into the next story. In the case of the Gabby Gifford story, lead with the story then follow it up with your main points.Mentioned in this episode:Is Your Show GrowingI took my twenty years of podcasting experience and put them into a PDF for you. Ep 49Inside the Jewelry Trade
The Poddcast: Inside the Jewelry Trade (iTunes) (stitcher)Website: http://fourgrainer.com/ This is a podcast designer for Jewlers on how to get more business. Its always kind of hard to get into the shoes of the listener (Jewlers) when you are not the target audience. Pros: The intro was well produced, decent energy. Nice use of humor and not taking yourself too seriously Lots of time put into the show, very NPR type delivery. Enjoyed the “changing watch batteries” stories. Show has an amazing arc. (Why they are excited, what they like most, personal stories, forcasting, recap). With all the clips, the volume never needed adjusted, and it flowed. Simple call to action at the end By asking for a donation, it adds personality to your podcast. Thing that Might Need Tweaked The intro promises a lot in the intro, that might lead to confusion Give a tease as to what is coming on the show at the very beginning. Not sure why Michelle was missing through most of the episode. A trick for those doing clip shows. Let the setup and the clip over lap. It makes things keep flowing. There was a time when it sounded a little “salesy” (which it is, a clip to get people to go to the show). Website / Technical Thoughts: Lost the ITJT at the beginning of your podcast posts. Put that at the end of the headline. Lots of white space, very mobile friendly. Easy navigation Easy to find contact information The Audio quality was fine. This is great for the advanced style of production. Tweaking Point For Website: Confused by the Formula one cars. Not sure what Four Grainer means (may be jewelry term) Surprised there was very few pictures of JewelryMentioned in this episode:Is Your Show GrowingI took my twenty years of podcasting experience and put them into a PDF for you. Today we take a peak at Dan Hansen's Coffee Couch a dedicated to "Creating Positive Social Change through Connectedness and Persistence". IN this episode Dan explains what inspired him to get into podcasting and what his show is about. Here are some of the notes from the show: Things That Are Going Well Seems well planned and to the point. Nice quote & story Easily digestible piece & short form Good job of putting book links in the show notes Nice clean look at the website. Things That Need Tweaked The three points were a little confusing. Maybe making it more obvious when one ended and the next began. The show setup seemed like buzzwords instead of really telling me what is coming.  Maybe just a touch more energy The website needs an about page about the podcast & you . Ep 41Special Mouse Podcast
The Special Mouse podcast is about going to Disney Parks with someone who has special needs. It is a great example of a podcast that embraces its community, and how a small niche can be just as powerful as a giant audience on a broad topic. Full disclosure, Dave edit's Kathy's podcast so asking Dave to rate the audio is not going to get an unbiased response. Stuff Kathy is Doing Right Intro: nice & clean.  Love the warmth with no big voice guy The sponsor fits well with the content. RN gives Kathy credibility Love the mouse theme with “mouse-keeping†and “anony-mouseâ€. Great Mickey tip of the week - be careful about copyright Enjoyed the knowledge and stories. Nice takeaway at the end - wrapped it up nicely Good job of enforcing that you know what it’s like - real stories Who doesnt’ love behind the scenes stuff? Soon to be ex-cast member for compalining. Loved the flow, ttransitions Loved the “down homeyness†I’m too busy to spam you. The about page is outward focused - nicely done Things You Might Consider Tweaking It was kind of hard to find areas that needed improvement. Add a contact page to your website (including social icons) Avoid asking yes/no and one word answer questions  “Where do you hail from? Are you a Florida local or do you travel to be a cast member?†Finish questions with the question - try not to answer it for them or give multiple choices “How did this all come about? Have you been wanting to be a cast member for a long, long time? Is this relatively new? Were you in the college program? Ep 38Sci-Fi Movie Podcast
Dave and Erik talk with Rem from the Sci-Fi Movie podcast. This is a podcast for someone who is looking to Dig deeper into sci-fi movies. Here is What They Are Doing Right In this episode they talked about Aliens the sequel to the movie Alien. They do a good job of comparing all the movies in this series. Great story about seeing the movie in the theater and the feelings it created They did a good of referring to each other by name (good for first time listeners). They get their audience involved with show via facebook. Their website is clean and easy to use. Good sounding audio. Really interesting trivia Really nice pace at the beginning/opening of the show Things They Might Want to Tweak Keep in mind Dave is no a sci-fi fan… There is cool trivia, and then there is nit picking. Dave does not care who would win in a fight between Han Solo and Superman. This episode included a segment where they acted out the movie (this has been retired). You might think of adding a generic amazon button in addition to the specific buttons While you do a good job of keeping the show moving, there are a LOT of segments (the episode about Aliens was actually longer than the movie). The contractor’s secret weapon is a podcast to help contractors get more business. It is hosted by Dave Negri and Justin Jones. Today we have Dave on the show who explains how they record, and why they got into podcasting. Here are some of our thoughts: Good Stuff: Great use of personal stories to amplify your points. It really helps show that you know what you’re talking about. Great job on the introduction explaining what the podcast is about. Stuff to Tweak: The website needs a bit of tweaking. I would use the Powerpress player to give more options to your visitors. Add an RSS button on the site. There are a couple of areas that leas to the same pages that is a bit confusing. Ep 36Ministry Encouragement Podcast
The Ministry Encouragement podcast is to help encourage Christ Followers. It is hosted by Jim Hollis. Here is what we thought. The intro was nice. You might consider explaining a bit more what the podcast will be about. You need a pop filter You seemed a bit stiff (it almost sounded like you were reading the contents) When you talk about personal stories it is more engaging. The story about witnessing on a plane really grabbed our attention. That was great. You could take it one step further and use descriptive words to really pain that picture in the theater of the mind. Come up with a call to action, and don’t be afraid to mention your service. Use bullet points for your show notes, and just talk into the microphone as if you are talking to a friend. Your website is clean. It needs an “about” page. Ep 35Fast Pitch Radio
Fat Pitch Radio and TV is great a podcast put together by Gary Lealand. In the episode we listened to he pulled his community in by soliciting questions from his facebook group. His website looks great, and his audio is well done. The advertisements that he inserts into his show are entertaining and brief. When interviewing people he should just go to the next question instead of announcing that he is going to the next question. All in all a great podcast for those who love past pitch softball. Ep 34Catholic Travel Journal
Today Dave and Erik review the Catholic Travel Podcast. This podcast is “The weekly audio journal about our pilgrimage preparations. We publish a new show every Monday.†The Good Stuff Good job of keeping things flowing, and sticking with theme (St pats). Good audio. Nice album artwork The way the hosts engaged with the guest. Nice follow-up questions. The personal, conversational style felt like we were talking at the kitchen table Great use of vivid words with the dinner and backyard descriptions Things That Could Be Tweaked Define the show for the audience right in the intro every episode. Set it up. Why am I here? Control your guest. He sometimes talked a long time. Ask questions to get him to focus. Use more vivid descriptions and great follow-up questions. Ask what your audience is asking in their heads. Depending on your choice, non cathloics are a bit lost (but then again, I’m not your audience). Don’t send people to pages with nothing. Would you keep a question in your podcast if you asked a yes or no question and they answered “no same things for websites. Due to a family emergency the show we were going to review could not make the show this week. In its place I went back into the vault of the podcast review show. I found episode 1 from May 2009. I chose a show I really liked called Digital Flotsam from from P.W. Fenton. This is a well produced podcast that is delivered with lots of warmth and preparation. P.W. Fenton doesn’t produce on a redictable schedule, but when a new episode is out he comes with a great story. If you want to feel the power of stories, click the play button below. Ep 33Who Do We Blame for This?
In today’s episode we find ourselves with no show to review (A slight scheduling snafu) so we talk about what to expect if you get your show reviewed. Erik K. Johnson Been on the radio for over 25 years He’s been coaching radio hosts for 20 years He hears podcasters making the same mistakes that Erik made when he first got into radio. Dave Jackson Been podcasting since 2005 Been in the Internet since the late 90′s Check your website from top to bottom Check your audio / video for levels, tagging. Why are You Podcasting and Who is Your target Audience One of the great things that the live format allows is we can understand the reasoning behind what you’re doing. We love to help you identify your goals, and your audience. Identify What You Do Right Our goal is not to just beat you down, but to identify what you’re doing right (so you can do more of that). We will point out those items that need tweaked. In some cases you think your content is coming across one way, and we heart it in a completely different light. They key to this is we provide constructive criticism. More Content You can find Erik at www.podcasttalentcoach.com You can find Dave at www.schoolofpodcasting.com Want to Get Reviewed? We typically record these via Google Hangout On Air (with a live audience). As a fallback, we will use Skype if Hangouts is having a bad day. We record at 8:30 EST on Thursday (so you will need to be available). If you’re not, let us know when you’re available (before ordering) and we’ll see if we can get our schedules to line up. Ep 32Monkey Radio with Marc - Back For More
Description: TWO MINDS. ONE WORLD. ZERO  PATIENCE. Marc Raco and hosts discuss whatâ's wrong with the world, showcase new artists, and throw around pop culture, entertainment, food, news everything os on the menu! There's curmudgeon producer Elsie, inventive games, fun, interviews, guest jokes and much more in every one-hour episode”plus theres always the infamous End of Show Food! With more than 535,000 worldwide downloads/streams since releasing our first co-hosted episode October, 2012—and growing every day”everyone is becoming a monkey! Dave's Thoughts: The Good Parts: They have done a good job of changing their episodes names. I liked the dialog more than the forced funny. You seem to do a good job of getting out of a topic once you hit it.- for the most part Your website better, but still needs work You have better titles than the last time. Parts That Need Tweaked Marc should invest in a dynamic microphone – its right at the point of annoying. Lose the background music in the background to get some without lyrics Move the second intro closer to the beginning to help your momentum. My complaints about Blog talk radio are not your fault. You are somewhat screwed, and moving away from them will be difficult if you want your audience to follow. (Blog talk radio messes up your ID3 tags, points to the wrong website, and hijacks your RSS feed). Erik’s Thoughts The Good Parts The details of the stories were solid.  They become genuinely funny when you are mentioning cartoons you watched or describing skiers collapsing. Know what you hope to accomplish with the story.  Lead with an intriguing intro. My girlfriend called a help desk and I totally busted they guy with his bait-and-switch move. Then tell the story. Parts That Could be Tweaked Jokes tend to be predictable.  Name one president that wouldn't be included in a Presidents Day Sale? Nixon. How about Vladamir Putin?  Somebody people don't expect. Funny is when you lead people where they think you should go and then do the unexpected.  Of course the sales call ended with Where else could it end? Ep 31Engaging Life and Leadership
The Engaging Life and Leadership podcast is  Discussing relevant answers for Christian men AND women in leadership positions.  Easy to remember – Simple to apply. It is hosted by Darren Dake and Anita Brooks. You can find their website at www.engaginglifeandleadership.com This episode features the first appearance from Erik K. Johnson of Podcast Talent Coach Things They Are Doing Well Darren and Anita have extensive backgrounds and they backup any points they make with stories and examples. They have good audio quality, and a warm and friendly tone. Overall, content is solid.  Great examples of putting each suggestion to use. The show had a strong topic (prosperity mindset) focus weaved through the entire show They do a good job of contributing to the show without stepping all over each other. You do a good job of explaining what to expect at the beginning of the show. Their website is easy to navigate, and I didn’t have to search for a play button. Things They Could Tweak When I first visited their site the contact page was having issues They are using Audacity to add the ID3 tags to their audio. As they are on a Mac, I recommend using ID3 Editor from pa-software.com You are currently using Feedburner.com for your feed. I would move away. Currently your album artwork does not display in Stitcher You tag line on your artwork is very hard to read when it comes up in search results in iTunes You were sending people to another site to locate your books. I would put a direct link to your books on the site.  Both hosts sound very well versed in the subject matter.   However, we never learn their story.  Why should I trust what they are saying?  Incorporate your backstory into the content. The introduction is long and not quite focused.  It includes everything from church leaders to business owners.  Who is our target here? Move the Patreon segment further into the podcast. There were lots of lists that became confusing.  I think there were 4.  Be sure to recap the lists when you finish them. They seemed to use  “we’ve talked about that before†quite often.  Even the first paragraph of the show notes say “As we’ve discussed on previous programs…† This is not welcoming for new listeners.  A new listener might feel like they missed something. The end of show could use a bit of a tune up. You had a recap. You had news. You had calls to actions (pural on purpose). These were all valid information, but could be organized just a bit more. Try to determine what is THE thing you want to ask your audience to do. If you give them too many choices, they won’t choose any of the options available. Ep 29One Word Go Show
This show will stick in my mind for a long time. It took a LOT of effort to get through this. I am not a prude. I laugh at comedians like Louie CK, Chris Rock, and Eddie Murphy (back in the day). I loved Sam Kinison. I laugh at South Park and the Family Guy. I love to laugh. This show is billed as a comedy. I didn’t hear any sarcasm. I didn’t hear an commentary on life that pointed out ironic behavior. There is (under neath it all) formulas that work in comedy and in opinion (and that’s all this is) this show doesn’t follow any of them. If you think the phrase “Who doesn’t masterbate at funerals” is funny then this show is for you. For me, it’s stupid. I watched Saturday night Fever. I watched the Wold of Wall Street (which set a record for the number of times “The F Word” was used in a movie). There was a story. There was CONTENT. This podcasts seems to swear because they want to be edgy. They have icing, but no cake. The premise of the show is they take words that have been submitted by the audience and make a show out of that one word. This is something similar that improv groups do where they pull multiple words from a group and try to fit them all into a sketch. I’ve seen Second City in Chicago (a group that was supplied much of the cast for the first season of Saturday Night Live), and even that group had 30% of their content bomb. In general, good content does not happen by winging it. In today’s show the highlights are: A girl sings I’m a little teapot out the window One of the hosts is leaving They do a prank call They talk about the co-hosts surfing for porn on his phone. I typically say content should move your audience. It should inspire them. My question is, “What do the crew and One Word Go Show want us to do with this?” OK it’s a comedy show. They expect us to laugh. I get that. For me (being in my late 40′s) I didn’t find it funny. Maybe if you’re between the ages of 15-22, you will. The Lightning Bolt That Is Breanne If you are a offensive enough person on reality TV, you will get your own show (see Honey Boo Boo, see Ambrosia, etc). On their website she is described as “She’s very open about her life, and doesn’t give a crap what you think. ” She reminds me of Cartman’s “Whatever I do what I want, only Breana would say “I do whatever I F#*king want Bitch.” For me, they lost me in the first 3 minutes with the endless unnecessary swearing. I do thank Mat for giving us a heads up that what was coming was immature, “dirty”, and at times violent. How to Swear Properly The F word is a word to accent a level of intensity. If you you broke up with me, I might say you broke my heart. If you broke up with me after I bought you a leather Jacket for Valentines day and you’re now dating my brother, I might say you F#*king broke my heart. If I use the word without respect for its power, you drain it of all it’s power. It loses it’s effect. Please respect the F word. It’s one of the best words we have. You might look at a post that I did a while ago that talks about Howard Stern had more than just dirty word. When he was on regular radio that required him to be creative. I have a sneaking suspicion that heavy drinking occurs before this show starts recording (as some of these topics are – in my opinion – are not as funny as the laugh they inspire). What This Show Does Well They provide a disclaimer at the beginning of the show They have easy to find subscribe buttons They made sure to have proper ID3 tags They put together some production music to introduce segments...

Ep 28Seishindo Life Tools
Aside from the confusing name, this podcast starts off hot out of the gate and sucks you in with usable step by step advice on being a better person and handling life’s little problems. What They Are Doing Right They have GREAT titles for their episodes. They have good audio quality, and they get right to the point They are honest, and provide strategies and tools to deal with situations. Charlie does not hold back on telling relevant stories about himself (key word relevant). Technically their file was in good shape. The podcast clocked in at 32 minutes. They came in, hit the topic and quit. They have the latest podcast one click away for new visitors. [email protected] There was one spot where Tony repeated exacly what Charlie had said. You might want to do this while recording so you both are on the same page, but I would cut it from the published podcast. Diane found the double confirmation a bit annoying. Fade the music in at the end under the talking. Add a subscribe button under the one episode on the front page (strike while the iron is hot). Get a better email address that you don’t have to spell Explain up front what the heck Seishindo means. You went over nine steps in the podcast, and then listed none of them on your site. Your post had less than 90 words. If you want more Google juice bump that up to 300. I’m a but confused why they have a membership, but didn’t mention it on the podcast. Conclusion This was a podcast that had us both listening intently, and both want to hear another episode. Great stories and skills to put to good use. Ep 27Photo Biz Exposed - The Ultimate Portrait and Wedding Photography Business Podcast
Today we review the Photo Business Exposed Podcast (at photobizx.com) by  Andrew Hellmich. This is a podcast for people who are doing photography professionally and are looking to grow their business. The podcast has received a ton of 5 star reviews in iTunes and I was worried about reviewing it (as I appeared on an episode). Luckily, I didn’t find much room for improvement. Here is the break down. Could Improve? At the beginning of the show there is a bit of hiss. Not a ton, and under most circumstances you wouldn’t even know it. It sound like Andrew is using a noise gate which takes the noise down to zero when nobody is talking. For me this typically draws my attention to it. Once the interview started, it seemed to go away. I like the small bit of chit cat at the beginning (I typically want all chit chat to tie in with the podcast topic, but this was brief). He then went into subscribing to the podcast using other tool like iTunes, stitcher, etc. I would move this toward the end. It was 6 minutes before he got to the interview, and you hadn’t given them any “real” information to make them go, “Wow I want more of this in the future.” This would be something to do at the end. While he has links to iTunes and Stitcher, he needs a regular RSS button (for those on android, or other platforms that the ultimate flexibility – and this is what I use to put a player on this website). I forgot to mention this on the podcast. What He Did Correct? Good name – its obvious. Great looking website using the Avana theme that was east to navigate, and lots of great pictures. I liked that when you go to listen to the podcast, the subscribe buttons are more obvious. Great audio levels, and proper ID3 tags. It wasn’t a giant commercial for his membership site, and he gave a full interview to his audience. He didn’t stop mid interview and go “If you want the rest, you need to join.” Instead we got a full interview and if you want to go deeper into the topics, you can sign up for $10 at his membership site. He asked good questions, and let his guest reveal great information. He listened and didn’t try to inject his opinion. I felt like he was asking the questions his audience would want him to ask. The guest spelled things out in a clear to understand, easy to act on, manner. He is building an email list. As there is a business behind this podcast (his membership site) this is a good idea. If you are into photography (and maybe if you’re just looking to grow your business) you can gleam alot of information out of this podcast. Find his podcast at photobizx.com and in iTunes and Stitcher. <img width="1" height="1"...

Ep 26Hilbilly Nerd Talk
Today we listen to Hillbilly Nerd Talk. Don’t let the name fool you, this is a pretty cool podcast that bring you news that you won’t hear in major news outlets. They are coming from the Appalachian mountains and they have southern accents but that’s where the hillbillyness (is that a word) ends. Please note I originally say they forgot to tag their MP# file but they didn’t (it just didn’t show up when I played it in Windows media). What You Are Doing Right I can hear the smile on your voice You’re delivering good content that I found interesting. Content I could tell my friends “I heard it on a podcast.” Your audio sounds good (some volume issues at the beginning, but you were mixed well). For the most part, you hit a topic, made your point and moved on. When you were done with the podcast, you ended it. You are talking about things you have passion about. Easy Things They Can Fix The music is too low on your intro. Anyone who turns it up will get blasted when you talk Change the titles of your show. If you want to put the number of the show on the website, do it in the show notes (they will show up in a search). Your headline is precious, precious real estate. You can drive traffic to your website when you talk about things like videos, but put a link to the video in your show notes. The show notes for episode 11 have a bunch of code in the middle. I would move your player up towards the top in your sidebar as you theme doesn’t put a player on the front page. Anyone who wanted to listen to your show has to scroll. Get Michael Hyatt’s Book Platform and add an “About” page that explains what to expect from your podcast, how people will benefit, and who you are. I would move the “Chit chat” part of your show to the end. I’m not sure what to change it to, but after listening to your show we need to update the website. Would I listen to another episode? Yes. Ep 25Triangle Tactical
Luke is a young man who has loves competitive shooting and his podcast features news for gun enthusiasts with a splash of politics. First Impression: Website Their WordPress theme is from Cyber Chimps and it was simple and easy to read with just a few touches of advertising. You have to click on a post to get to a player. For me I would use blubrry.com or podtrac.com to get a player for people to click on toe listen to one (or more) episodes without clicking on a post. I prefer them to open in a new window for those people who listen at work. First Impression: Podcast We listened to episode 48, and the show starts off with some high energy music. The host Luke brought some energy to the microphone. For me, I hate music for the sake of music. So you could go to a site like fiverr.com and get some affordable voice over (or check out Music Radio Creative ). They had a bit of “chit chat” at the beginning that was barely gun related (but it was short). Both hosts have good voices, their audio sounds good. The bad news is they have the dreaded blue music note of death. This means you are not adding your ID3 tags before you upload your file to libsyn. Do You Like Guns? I am not a huge guns person. I can take them or leave them. Consequently, I am not their target audience (a point I repeat too often in the episode). They use a lot of jargon that I have no idea if they know what they are talking about. They seem to have an active Facebook page (620+ likes) and 17 five start reviews in iTunes. Their audience seems to think they provide a no jargon, straightforward approach. If you are pro gun, and are interested in competitive shooting, this is the podcast for you. Don’t Assume Too Much While I may not be there target audience, don’t always assume people have read your blog, or heard the latest news. You can always give a quick two sentence paraphrase of the top story before giving you opinion. Say No To Feedburner I didn’t mention this on the podcast, but I see their feed is being run through Feedburner. This was a good idea in 2005, but not in 2013. You’re using Blubrry, use that plugin for your feed as well. Check Out the Podcast You can find them at http://www.triangletactical.net. Ep 24You Suck At Weight Loss Meets You Suck at Recording
Today IÂ went searching for a podcast that didn’t have “celebrity” something that was truly independent. I found “Why you suck at weight loss.” The podcast had good album artwork, a title that sucked me in, a good description in itunes. So far so good. Their website was a little “spammy,” and by that I mean there are a LOT of advertisements and I really had to search to find the podcast to listen to. I could see they are using Libsyn.com for their media hosting, so it looked like this person was on the right path. And then I hit play. This is a classic example of good content, but poor audio quality. I would’ve stopped after the 30 second mark if I wasn’t reviewing the podcast. It sound like he is using a cheap headset microphone that produced a lot of hiss and a loud humming sound. When the microphone is turned off, it made it that much more noticeable when it came back on. This was not a great first impression. This lead to him playing a clip of him reading his book. It was very, very, obvious that he was reading his book. The audio again was poor, and he had the intro music still going. It was quiet in the background, but slightly distracting. That same looping music was going 16 minutes later and had me wanting to jump out of a window. He was using stories in his book, and the content seemed good. It was the delivery. Here is how I would fix this podcast. 1. Shorten the intro, and get a voice over person to announce the show and what people should expect. 2. Announce yourself, welcome your audience and explain what you would be doing today. “Today I’m going to talk about chapter one of my book.” 3. Instead of reading the book, make some bullet points about the topics covered and then tell the reader about them using the same stories that are in the book. Lines could read, “Going to get yogurt.’ Treat it like a time shifted conversation. Invite people to contact you, and get to know your audience. Develop a relationship with them. 4. Record at 44.1 not 22. This will double the quality of your current audio. I would export at 64 kbps mono. Currently you are using 96kbps stereo. This would not be a bad choice if you had recorded at 44.1. As you recorded at 22, the quality isn’t there. Think of the 44 vs 22 as the number of times a picture is taken of your voice. The more pictures, the more accurate the sound. 5. Remove some of the advertisements on the site (put them all in the sidebar) and go to blubrry.com and use their player (or player.podtrac.com) . 6. Determine what you want people to do and ask for it. I am guilty of this one as well. Pick ONE call to action. When you provide multiple options for action, your audience might get paralysis from analysis. One More Key Point Roberty has only recorded two episodes. The good news is he could easily go back and rerecord those first two episodes and repost them and future listeners would never know the other files exist. You have all the steps covered to land in new and notable, but you audio quality will hinder your growth of repeat listeners. Ep 23Machine Court
Today we review Machine court where machine’s judge humans. This is the second time we’ve reviewed a podcast that is just chock full of creativity, and “thinking outside the box.” I love the fact that its not another comedian interviewing comedians. It’s not a tech show about Macs. It’s not podcast reviewing movies. It’s original. That’s the good news. Their artwork is awesome. Their id3 tags are in place. Their website is easy to navigate, and the opportunity to subscribe to their podcast is abundant. I so wanted to love this podcast. But in the end the one thing missing was engaging content. It didn’t make me laugh. It did make me think, and groan. This may be partly due to a lack of categories in iTunes. I see why they put this under comedy as they are attempting humor, but this is almost a drama as they put so much into the production with lavish sound effects and they really put a lot of gas into the theater of the mind. I was impressed. It just didn’t make me laugh. It’s labeled as a comedy, so I expected to laugh. This may be one of those podcasts where you need to give it a couple of spins. Go for more than one episode so you can get to know the characters. I know for me, the one robot’s voice was like nails in a 400 foot chalkboard by the end of the episode. I give them credit for never breaking character, but it was annoying to me. They also did a bit where a robot sounding like Jimmy Stewart was partaking of “Glory Hole” in a men’s bathroom. I get this joke. I was the one who wondered what it would be like to listen to George and Mary Bailey sounded like during sex back in 2005. Its funny to put squeaky clean Jimmy in a Glory Hole environment. The episode was called “Sexlandia” so I expected some sex stuff. In the end, it made me smile at the effort, but not a giggle. Sorry. Things They Might Want to Do: If these episodes need some setup, maybe add a “on last week’s episode such and such happened.” For me, the content didn’t move me. I’m not sure if any kind of setup that would explain the characters would help. I loved robots on Mystery Science theater, but not so much here. Things They Are Doing Great: So much effort goes into these episodes. The artwork is great. The website is clean. Their audio is good. They have a community on facebook. It truly bothered me that I couldn’t give this a thumbs up. Ep 22Niche Down with the Nursing Times
Today we welcome “the hammer” back to the show after taking some time away for a medical leave. In honor of her return we have review the nursing times podcast out the of the UK. This is a great example of a “niche” podcast that is all about being a nurse in the UK. Things they Do Right They a seem to have the pulse of the UK nurse, they are putting some effort into their podcast. There are insights from the “front lines” of nursing in the UK that will have a smaller audience, but those that find it will LOVE IT. My wife is a nurse, and she loved it as it took her back to the days of nursing school. Things They Can Improve You have no album artwork in iTunes. This is a HUGE “no no” as you are blowing your first impression in the place that owns about 60% of the marketing. There are no show notes on your website or anything mentioning your podcast. How are you going to get more listeners if nobody can find it? Don’t hold your contact information hostage “we’ll tell you how at the end of the show.” Make it EASY to contact you. Proving You Can Do Anything You Want – It’s YOUR Podcast In the middle of the podcast they bust out a song. I would normally put a player here so you could hear their podcast, but there isn’t one listed on their website. Mentioned in this episode:Is Your Show GrowingI took my twenty years of podcasting experience and put them into a PDF for you. Check out 10 Strategies for growing your podcast can help you. Ep 21Secretly Timid
My first impression of this podcast was confusion. Secretly Timid? What does this mean? What will this be about? When I went to their website, they add lots of pictures and videos to each video posts. I searched for an “About” page, and couldn’t find one. The only thing I could find was a page that talked about the background of all the hosts. When I went to their iTunes listing there was almost no description except that it was an irreverent weekly podcast based out of Texas. If you are looking for more insights, you might check out some of their reviews in iTunes. The reviewer stated the four hosts have a great dynamics and are hilarious. It sets they all bring something to the table and they have strong beliefs and they stand behind them. The episode I listened to had the hosts discussing the Mad Men television show. They also talk about getting stuck in traffic. They share a story about ordering broccoli and having the people who served the broccoli. The “teaser” for the show is a reference to people licking another person’s anus. They also discuss what they got their Mother’s for Mother’s day. Things They Are Doing Correctly Their ID3 tags are correct and their recording levels are good. They seem to have planned out their episode and they know what they are going to talk about. I liked some of the dialog. Unlike a “Rush Limbaugh” who is a one trick pony, you seemed to want to weigh both sides of a discussion and be willing to look at all the sides of a story. They mark their episodes as explicit and they are. Things I Would Work On As a new listener, I have no idea who you are. Consequently, I don’t care that you were stuck in traffic. What you might want to try is hitting your “Hot Topics” first and draw your audience in. Then (Now that we kind of have been introduced to you a little and have a slight understanding of you) do the “here’s what happened to me this week.” Quit using Podpress. Podpress is a very outdated plugin for WordPress that left thousands of people with broken websites in the past. Read/hear about why podcast is bad. The audio of your voicemail was really bad, and you need to have a way to boost the volume of the call so its as loud as you. You might look into putting links to the music you spotlight at amazon.com and iTunes using affiliate links. This might help put some gas in your tank. You mention your podcast on facebook, but there is no link to your facebook page. You can remove the link to the zune directory on your website as it doesn’t exist anymore. I would change the titles of yoru episodes and move the “episode ___” to the end (or remove it – nobody cares what episode it is). Put that information in your ID3 tag (which you already are). The link to your itunes uses itpc format. That’s HORRIBLE as anyone who subscribes does not get credit for being subscribed (so you don’t get credit). See this video. It May Not Be There Fault Classifying this podcast as comedy thinks it going to get me to laugh. It didn’t. The problem is, I’m not sure what I would classify this as. For whatever reason, this just didn’t move me. You can subscribe to their RSS FEED, or find them in iTunes You can listen to their podcast by clicking on the player below Mentioned in this...

Ep 20Youth With a Mission
The YWAM Podcast is a place for you to find out more about what is happening around Youth With A Mission in these three areas. We talk about upcoming training opportunities, evangelism opportunities and ways that you can be involved in showing God’s love in practical ways. Website The website is very white. They say the easiest site to read is black text on a white background. Its very easy to navigate, and you can easily contact them if needed. The only thing I would recommend would be putting buttons to subscribe in iTunes and a standard RSS button. Check out this video to see how. As the website is so incredibly white, I might play with adding a background color to the website. Keep the posts white, but change the background color to something that’s not white (maybe off white, gray, etc if you want to stick with the black/white theme). Audio Quality The audio quality was fine as much of it he had no control over (as he played clips or videos that he did not create). Bill did do a good job of making sure the volumes were even so when he started a video clip it didn’t blast my head off, or make me reach for the volume knob to turn up. His ID3 tags were included, and everything was fine. Personal and Informative Bill talk about his personal experience in this organization. It tied in and added a nice personal touch. It became more of a conversation than a news show. Many podcasters throw in personal stories that have nothing to do with what they are talking about, but Bill used his personal story because it DID tie in with his podcast. A Great Example of How Organizations to Keep their Chapters Up to Date If you have an organization and you want to keep them up to date, as well as use as a promotional tool – this is a great example. In addition to keeping people up to date, the podcast also included a music spotlight (which goes with knowing the audience and what they would enjoy). Things Done Well: 1. Great job taking multiple clips and making sure the volumes are even. 2. Making finding the content on the website easy (with things like www.ywampodcast.com/62 ) 3. Extensive show notes that leave no questions for visitors. Things I was Confused On It took me a few glances to figure out where the links to subscribe in iTunes were located. Also you mentioned dts (some sort of training that people do right after high school). I don’t know what DTS stands for (even though you did say it a few times). While this is “jargon” to people outside of your target audience, this probably was a second hand comment to anyone who is involved with YAWM. Ep 19Night Terriers
I had the most creative request to get a podcast review. I was told they really valued my opinion. I decided to review the show. I write this with a pain in my stomach as I hate to provide constructive feedback to people who look up to my opinion. These seem to be very creative people who have not quite “found their voice.” They are obviously creative, but their efforts didn’t bring us to any release of emotions. Yes you have found the ability to add some sound effects to your voice, but much like the movies without a decent plot special effects can’t carry a movie. As you know these dogs, this might be funnier to you. As new listeners we don’t have that “inside view” into the dogs personality. Keep going, you might be on to something. What We Liked The artwork on the website showed lots of promise. Not a huge time commitment per episode (short). You sound like Hoops and Yoyo. What Needs Tweaked Change your headlines. 80% of what people read is based on the headlines. There is a chance that some of the jokes here are a bit of an inside joke. In some cases we really had to think about the punch line to really understand if this was funny (if you have to explain the joke it’s not funny). Make it easier listen to the podcast. Don’t send people away from your website. Remove the html from the beginning of the blog post (show notes) Use the powerpress plugin. I would get your podcast on your own self hosted website (not wordpress.com). Ep 18Monkey Radio with Marc
Marc asked to have Monkey Radio reviewed. He has had lots of press, and according to Blog talk Radio he is getting LOTS of downloads. Here is what we came up with: 1. Blog Talk Radio is wrong on so many levels, that I may do a whole episode on it for the School of Podcasting podcast. BTR is listed as the talent not you. That is unacceptable. 2. Your intro’s volume is all over the place. 3. You took three minutes to let me know what was on the show. 4. You lead story was a weird date. 5. Your co-host seems to be too far off the mic, and needs to reposition his pop filter. 6. You’re using Wix as your platform. It works, but WordPress is my recommendation. 7. You spent a HUGE amount of time on your sponsor. 8. The food segment at the end was too long, and featured information that needed to be seen. I understand its the sponsor, but we got the point. 9. Your ID3 tags are messed up due to BTR (see point 1). What we liked 1. I enjoyed the storied about the homeless. It was personal, and made me think. Ep 17One Extraordinary Marriage
I met Tony at the New Media Expo and he seemed like such an awesome guy. I was telling my wife about their story and podcast (it’s amazing). You can find them at oneextraordinarymarriage.com where you can find their podcast, and their books 7 Days of Sex Challenge: How to Rock Your Sex Life and Your Marriage and Stripped Down: 13 Keys to Unlocking Intimacy in Your Marriage or Happy, Healthy & Hot!: A 30-Day Blueprint to Take Back Your Health and Enjoy a Sexy Body No Matter How Busy You Are . Their website is clean and simple to navigate. At first I couldn’t find their iTunes button (they have a smaller one listed at the bottom of each episode). Their podcast is BRUTALLY HONEST (they discuss BJs in this episode). They do talk about sex in an open and honest – very honest – fashion. For Diane and I it got us talking, and thinking. The episode we listen to was about showering with your spouse. We both liked this episode, but we weren’t really sure that once they got the main topic out there that we needed the last 15 minutes of the podcast. The bottom line is the answer to “Would you listen to another episode of this podcast?” the answer is YES. This show started off with them sharing what was going on in their life. They had just the right amount of this. Some podcasters share too much here, and take forever to get to their main topic. If you are married, this podcast is definitely worth listening to. When I spoke with Tony at the New Media Expo, he wants to eventually be syndicated on the radio. One thing they need to do is add an RSS button to their website. They have links to iTunes and stitcher, but nothing for those who want to add their podcast to their phones (or other devices) manually. You can find their podcast at oneextraordinarymarriage.com or click the play button to listen to them now or subscribe to them in iTunes Mentioned in this episode:Is Your Show GrowingI took my twenty years of podcasting experience and put them into a PDF for you. Ep 16Mommy's Cocktail Hour
Today “the hammer” is back to comment on Mommy’s Cocktail Hour. I had heard about this podcast as it was up for a podcast award. It features four Mom’s who share a cocktail recipe and talk about the challenges of being a mom of young children. For us the highlight of the podcast was the kids, as they are adorable. They seemed to have an outline of topics to cover, but in the end there wasn’t much content that really enticed us (Saving money whne buying a purse is good content, it just didn’t strike a chord with me). This is another case that we are probably not their demographic (being that “the Hammer’s” oldest child just got married). Sound quality was OK. It is hard to get four people on a call without introducing a fair amount of his. When you are recording children it gets even worse. Their album art was fine, but they need a description in iTunes (there isn’t any). The content had us hitting the speed up button to get us through it. Tips on purse shopping and fountain drinks didn’t hold our attention. We did like the fact that they kept everything positive and it wasn’t a giant gripe session. One can easily see that if you were a young Mom with small children the tips on buying toys would’ve been very valuable (maybe when we get Grand kids it will ring more true). An hour is a long time to fill for me, and this podcast didn’t move fast enough for us. On the other hand they have a large Facebook following, so what do we know… You can find them at Mommyscocktailhour.com Listen to Mommy’s Cocktail Hour Now or find them in iTunes Mentioned in this episode:Is Your Show GrowingI took my twenty years of podcasting experience and put them into a PDF for you. Ep 14Build My Online Store
The PodcastToday we review the Build My Online Store podcast.I LOVE the intro. Lots of energy, and it gets me going. Terry has some decent energy, and has someone who sells condoms online.
