72: Princess Mononoke with Miguel Jiron

Phil and Kenny are joined on the podcast this week by director and animator Miguel Jiron (Into the Spiderverse) to discuss - yawn - Hiyao Miyazaki's "Princess Mononoke." We have some real slogs in 1999, but few are as rote as this one, folks. It's a story you've heard a million times. Boy kills giant hog imbued with a demon spirit. The spirit gets inside him and gives him, you guessed it, superhuman strength but, yup, is also going to kill him. In an effort to find a cure, he encounters a wolf goddess and her human daughter, San. I know, grow an imagination, Miyazaki. Of course, they don't fall in love, but grow to have a mutual respect for each other, like pretty much every story about a young man and woman in traumatic circumstances. That says nothing of the other mundane things he runs into, like your cliched group of bandaged of lepers manufacturing firearms or the tree spirits who probably hold the secret to all life on earth. On top of that, visually it looks like a Monet come to life and populated with best and worst living dreams and nightmares of a opium eater. Like every other fucking movie ever. Well, we said we'd do every movie, so here's Princess Mononoke for you. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

71: The Wood with Alexandra Amin

Alexandra Amin (WME) joins Phil and Kenny to talk about The Wood, a 1999 movie about the unexpected boners of growing up and the way those boners affect us all the way into adulthood and the friends you make along the way to help you get past your biggest boners as you stop being such a boner. 69: Stuart Little with Dana Schwartz

Dana Schwartz (Entertainment Weekly) joins the podcast to discuss Stuart Little, a movie that proves it’s not the size of the mouse that counts, it’s the size of his heart, which is also minuscule, because Stuart is a mouse. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

68: 200 Cigarettes with Sean O’Connor

Sean O’Connor (Late Late Show) joins Phil and Kenny to discuss Risa Bramon Garcia’s New Year’s Eve flick “200 Cigarettes” starring Paul Rudd, Nicole Ari Parker, Courtney Love, Dave Grohl, Krist Novaselic, Dave Chappelle, David LaChapelle, Martha Plimpton, Martha Plimpton’s friend, A Scottish Guy, Jay Mohr, Would Have Preferred Jay Less If You Know What I Mean, Kate Hudson, Ben Affleck, Casey Affleck, the Aflac Duck, Gabby Hoffman, Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, Ashleigh Aston Moore, Guillermo Diaz, Fuck you, Fuck you, Fuck you, You’re Cool, Angela Featherstone, Paula Poundstone, Jeanine Garofalo (duh), Elvis Costello’s Glasses and Seamus McNally as “Crazed Driver” (uncredited). 67: Blue Streak with Anupam Nigam

Anupam Nigam (Station 19, Psych) joins Kenny and Phil to discuss “Blue Streak,” Martin Lawrence’s 1999 remake of the beloved British Heist Film “The Big Job.” “Blue Streak” is one of the few remakes we cover in 1999 and, frankly, the most superfluous. Of what use is Martin Lawrence’s portrayal of diamond-thief-cum-imposter-police-officer when compared to Sid James’ legendary work in the original? For whom is the easy chemistry between Lawrence and co-star Luke Wilson, when anybody could type “The Big Job” into any steaming service and relive the timeless, oft-quoted repartee between Mr. James and Dick Emery? And which constituency was crying out to have the masterful scene where Mr. James disguises himself as a Italian food courier - replete with those classic wonky British dentures - reenacted by Mr. Lawrence? “Blue Streak” is, on own merits, a perfectly cromulent caper. But it is rendered obsolete in a society like ours, for, as everyone knows, “The Big Job” is cultural touchstone for families the world over. In remaking a timeless classic like “The Big Job,” moviegoers in 1999 likely wondered if Hollywood had simply run out of new ideas. Fortunately, it did not portend a permanent problem for the film industry. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

66: 1999 Oscars with Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson (Awards Watch) join Phil and Kenny to break down and examine the 1999 Oscars, which got pretty much everything wrong. Fortunately for movie lovers, the Academy has pretty much figured it out in the last 20 years. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

65: The Cider House Rules with Erik Anderson

Erik Anderson (Awards Watch) joins Phil and Kenny to discuss the multiple Oscar-winning film "The Cider House Rules" and the 1999 Oscars. But first, much like a certain Cider House, this podcast has rules. The Podcast Like It's 1999 Rules: 1. Please do not talk about The Cider House Rules as if it was a worthy Best Picture nominee over Magnolia, Being John Malkovich, Eyes Wide Shut or The Talented Mr. Ripley. Or Toy Story 2. Or Notting Hill. Or The Mummy. Or EdTV. Or Anywhere but Here. Or Deuce Bigelow. 2. Please do not mention Michael Caine's Best Supporting Actor performance without also including that Tom Cruise was robbed. 3. Please do not speak positively about John Irving's Best Adapted Screenplay win without noting the category also included Election, The Talented Mr. Ripley, the Insider and The Green Mile* (*Mentioning the Green Mile is optional). 4. Please do not give this film "bonus points" for tackling abortion or the exploitation of marginalized workers without also noting the issues are shown exclusively from the point of view of white men. 5. Please do not drink or smoke on the roof. If you follow those rules, we should have a great podcast, you Princes of Maine, you Kings of New England. Hosted on Acast. 60: Dudley Do-Right with Erin La Rosa

Erin La Rosa (Netflix social media) came back to the podcast for her second Brendan Fraser-Hugh Wilson film. She thought she was just there to talk Fraser, but she never could have anticipated what awaited her. When people talk about the best twists of 1999, they’ll mention The Sixth Sense or The Matrix. Perhaps the more artsy of us will ride for eXistenZ. And maybe those who don’t understand twists will stan for, I don’t know, The Bone Collector? But the biggest twist of all is that this movie about a simple Canadian Mountie and his flatulent horse named Horse based on a little-loved cartoon is not only good, it’s great! Listen to this episode to find out if this write up was itself a twist as well and it’s really as bad as you think. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

59: Bicentennial Man with Libby Hill and Todd Van Der Werff

Bicentennial Man is a film from 1999 with a title that gives away the ending. If the studio was intent on giving away the ending, perhaps they should have gone with one of their alternate, snappier titles instead, such as: “I Fucked My Fridge” Todd Van Der Werff (Vox) and Libby Hill (LA Times) join us for a high-minded discussion on the film* that ended Robin Williams’ career as a leading man. * ”Jakob the Liar” can also make this claim, but fortunately for us we won’t be covering it because it was made in ... well, fuck. Phil, Kenny and Okieriete Onaodowan (Hamilton, Station 19, sorry, did you miss what we said? Hamilton. The original Broadway Cast. He was Hercules Mulligan and James Madison. If you knock him down he’ll get the fuck back up again! Oh my god, I’m fanboying out and I’m just a bot that generates amusing podcast writeups, back to the movie) take a trip to a little redneck mountain town (which is directly from the movie. So strap in you big ol dildo pirates as we let Stan, Kyle, Cartman, Kenny, Chef, Mr. Hat and Satan serenade us with the best - and only - toe-sucking, pubic hair-ingesting musical of 1999. 54: October Sky with Carrie Gillogly

We all have dreams, but the truly great ones dare to dream the dreams that have never been dreamt before. Take Carrie Gillogly (AMC), our guest for the week. Carrie had a dream to guest on the podcast about October Sky, the 1999 Jake Gyllenhaal-Chris Cooper space/mining drama, and make co-host Kenny appreciate it for the sensitive story of one man’s perseverance it is. At every turn, she experienced seemingly insurmountable odds. Yet, like the protagonist Homer Hickman, she persevered. But, did she succeed in her mission? Tune in to find out! Hosted on Acast. 53: Superstar with Molly Green and James Leffler

Once in a generation, a podcast comes along that is so riveting, so ravishing, so revolutionary that it can only be described as a SUPERCAST. Unfortunately, our podcast on Molly Shannon’s Superstar is not that supercast. It is, however, an honest and frank discussion of a wildly misunderstood and underappreciated diamond in 1999’s rough. Much thanks to our guests, Molly Green and James Leffler (Station 19), for excavating said diamond and holding it up to figuratively/audibly shine for everyone. Hosted on Acast. 52: All About My Mother with Hailey Wierengo

It’s been a full year here at Podcast Like It’s 1999 and Phil and Kenny are celebrating in style as they are joined by producer Hailey Wierengo to discuss Pedro Almodóvar’s Oscar-winning film “All About My Mother!” I just write the synopses, so I don’t know what this movie is about, but Moms are great, so I’m sure it’s a sweet tale about fun moms! 51: Music of the Heart with Melissa Lora and Corinne Stikeman

Kenny and Phil are not your average podcasters. Most podcasters look at humanity and see a small sliver who can podcast at even a remedial level. But not Kenny and Phil. They believe that podcasting comes from within... that it comes from the heart. So, it was with that spirit, that they invited Melissa Lora and Corinne Stikeman - two podcast guests with a scant four guest episodes of experience between them - on to the podcast. But Phil and Kenny did not take it easy on Melissa and Corinne. They could have started slow, with a rip-roaring crowd-pleaser like "The Mummy" or a meaty hunk of podcast fodder-beef like "Wild Wild West," but, instead, Melissa and Corinne were forced to come up with 90-120 minutes of aural delight about the Violins-in-East-Harlem, Meryl Streep-vehicle, "Music of the Heart." We can hear you shudder. How can two novices, two amateurs, two rookies spin such a plain, boring, rote film into podcast gold? Well. Take a listen. You won't believe your ears. As long, that is, as you listen with your heart. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

50: Outside Providence with Emily Fox

One of the quirks of 1999 is that the year produced several high-profile entities’ most off-brand films. Included among these is David Lynch’s not-weird “The Straight Story,” Eddie Murphy’s not-funny “Life,” Disney’s not-musical “Tarzan,” and Rob Reiner’s not-good “The Story of Us.” Add to that “Outside Providence.” Emily Fox (Hindsight, Girlfriends Guide to Divorce) joins us to discuss the Farrelly Brothers-written, coming-of-age, stoner dramedy that doesn’t have any bird’s heads falling off, one-handed bowlers, conjoined twins, or even one drop of semen in any character’s hair. It was a dark and stormy night when Clarke Wolfe came into the podcast studio like hurricane to weather a conversational storm about Forces Of Nature with Phil and Kenny. A flood of analysis was followed by a tidal wave of critical thought and a tsunami of disagreement. Is Forces of Nature a tornado of fun or is it a volcano, it’s molten lava slowly threatening to devour you from the ankles up, as you struggle to break free but your femurs have already been disintegrated by its trudging witticisms, leaving you know chance by ride out the storm with Ben Afflecjk and Sandra Bullock? 47: Life with Chuck Hayward

E

What is Life? For centuries, the greatest minds in science, philosophy and theology have endeavored to answer that most unanswerable of questions. We’ve grappled with its meaning, questioned its purpose and cursed its inevitable end. While the experience is universal, it’s the ineffable nature of it has baffled us all. A satisfying answer, it seemed, was never to be. But then, in 1999, like a bolt of lightning, an answer came: Life is a prison-set comedy with dramatic overtones starring Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence. Chuck Hayward (Step Sisters, Dear White People) joins Phil and Kenny to discuss this most momentous of discoveries. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

46: She’s All That with David Iserson

This podcast started as a bet. Could Phil and Kenny take any guest and turn him into the Podcasting King? After rejecting a few deeper-voiced possibilities, they settled on David Iserson, who had glasses. David proved to be more than meets the eye, however, when he shrewdly chose the film “She’s All That,” an oft-requested classic of the teen genre, as his movie. David proceeded to wow the boys with his podcasting bona fides. Turns out, he’s a seasoned writer - features and TV, comedy and drama - making him highly desirable to podcasts ranging from Scriptnotes to WTF to the one where Doug Benson gets high. He’s also full of podcast-able tidbits like, did you know he had a She’s All That poster in his college dorm room? And that it was in French?! But the only way to prove that David is the new podcasting king of the internet is if this episode gets more download than any before it. Can David do it? Can Phil and Kenny do it? Or will love get in the way? Download to find out! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

44: Tarzan with Emily Morris

E

Oh, how wonderful! 1999 has brought us yet another treat in the form of a movie from the Disney Renaissance, the delightful era that birthed such classics as "The Little Mermaid, "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King." How sweet they are, with their singing animals, dancing inanimate objects and overall sense of wonder! I can't wait to see which one we get to-- Oh, it's "Tarzan." We got "Tarzan?" You know, Me, Tarzan, You Jane "Tarzan?" The one where the characters don't sing. Or dance. Where it all takes place on basically one beach. The one with the Phil Collins' song that beat Aimee Mann for Best Original Song!? That's the one we get?! Well, we'll be damned if Emily Morris (21 Laps) didn't come on and defend the shit out of her beloved Ape-man and his rock-hard abs. And we'll be further damned if she didn't get Phil and Kenny to see beyond the lack of theme park-ready set pieces and find a warm, tender, beautiful and sad movie at its core. Sometimes you open a present and it's not what you want, but it's what you need. And, maybe in 1999, the world needed "Tarzan." Or maybe it needed "Toy Story 2," but we'll get there eventually. 42: The Virgin Suicides with Alison Eakle

E

Phil and Kenny welcome Alison Eakle (Shondaland) to the pod to discuss a film that puts its all right out there in the title. But between the unsuccessful suicide attempt that opens the film and the more successful ones that close it, is a beautiful, haunting film about the joys and horrors of growing up female in suburban America. The joys include camaraderie among your peers, dew-lit school dances, sexual awakening and the discovery of yourself. The horrors include that James Woods could be your father. Please join us as we dive deeper into Sofia Coppola's debut film, "The Virgin Suicides." Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

41: Drop Dead Gorgeous with Jarett Wieselman

E

And then they were down to three contestants in the Mr. Podcast Like its 1999 pageant: Phil Iscove, Kenny Neibart and Jarett Wieselman (Netflix Social). With all three men tied, it would come down to their answers in the interview portion. Phil went first and his question was: "If you were stuck on a desert island, what one movie from 1999 would you take with you and why is it Drop Dead Gorgeous?" But Phil protested that it would actually be either Magnolia, The Straight Story or Toy Story 2 - depending upon who was asking the question - and was eliminated from competition. Kenny was up next and was asked: "Which character from Drop Dead Gorgeous do you most relate to?" But when Kenny responded it was Denise Richard's character Becky Ann Leeman, the booing and hissing was so loud it drowned out the remainder of his answer and he was awarded zero points. Finally, Jarett was asked: "Why isn't Drop Dead Gorgeous available on any streaming service in the world?" Jarett went into a violent rage and murdered everyone as a homage to Drop Dead Gorgeous, leaving the judges no choice but to award Mr. Podcast Like It's 1999 to... Kirsten Dunst! Hosted on Acast. 40: The Mummy with Keely Flaherty

In this episode of Podcast Like It’s 1999 Keely Flaherty (Netflix) joins Phil and Kenny to the Egyptology travelogue, “The Mummy.” While some see “The Mummy” as a morality tale set against the sandy deserts of Cairo, we here at Podcast Like It’s 1999 prefer to view the work as an ode to the weary archaeologist, she who spans the globe in search of the riches and secrets of a epoch lost to history. A living tribute to the brave men and women willing spelunk the darkest crypts, excavate the most haunted tombs and stare down the most terrifying ghouls, “The Mummy” exalts the modern archeologist, the true action hero. 38: Bringing out the Dead with Stephen Vitale

E

We did a podcast. It was a podcast about "Bringing Out the Dead," That movie about ambulance drivers in Hell's Kitchen? We talked with Stephen Vitale, a filmmaker, for while about the intersection of life and death and whatnot. We thought it was a lovely, constructive and enlightening conversation. So why do we still feel like there's nothing to live for? This podcast. It's important. Maybe not for society, but for us. We touched on so many things, like the use of the color red and religious imagery and which of Nicholas Cage's three partners - John Goodman, Ving Rhames or Tom Sizemore - were the most entertaining and/or terrifying. We really felt like we were creating something great. And we did. I think. Maybe not. Who knows. You'll just have to listen for yourself and decide, did Podcast Like It's 1999 do "Bringing out the Dead" justice? Or should we just drive quietly into that terrible night? Hosted on Acast. 37: Never Been Kissed with Stacy McKee

E

Stacy McKee (creator, Station 19) joins Phil and Kenny for a lively discussion about Never Been Kissed. Never Been Kissed is, of course, a work of narrative fiction. But if YOU’VE never been kissed, it can serve as a how-to guide as well! Step One: Look like, and be as, charming as Drew Barrymore Step Two: Get a job at a newspaper run by a crazy old man (like a Garry Marshall-type) who is willing to send you on an investigative report into your old high school on a whim. Step Three: Get your 20-something brother, who hopefully can also pass for high school-age like, say, David Arquette, to also enroll in high school and make you cool. Step Four: Entrap your handsome Michael Vartan-esque teacher into falling for you. Step Five: Ignore any awkwardness (or legal issue) that might arise due to potential underage concerns. Step Six: KISS! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

36: Arlington Road with Susanna Fogel

E

Phil and Kenny are joined by the Director of “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” Susanna Fogel. Or are they? Because in this podcast, nothing is as it seems. What sounds like a friendly discussion about domestic terrorism might actually be code for something for more sinister. What could be heard as a simple recasting of a modern version of “Arlington Road” might really be seeing the seeds for something far more dangerous. And what is usually a calm, thoughtful podcast about the movies of 1999 might just turn into a powderkeg of repressed emotions waiting to explode like some kind of nondescript, midwestern federal building! Tune into this week’s podcast to find out the truth! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Bonus Episode: Roger Kumble, Writer/Director of "Cruel Intentions"

35: Cruel Intentions with Tom Mison

Phil and Kenny are joined by "Sleepy Hollow" star Tom Mison to discuss and dissect "Cruel Intentions." "Cruel Intentions," if you're not familiar, is your classic story of Boy meets Girl. Girl happens to be his Step-Sister. Boy falls in love. Girl offers a quid-pro-quo. Boy destroys the reputation of Another Girl. In exchange, Boy get to have sex with Girl. During speculative sex, Boy is told he can put it wherever he wants. Girl, may I remind you, his Boy's Step-Sister. Girl kisses Another Other Girl, who's reputation Boy also has to destroy. Boy kinda maybe rapes Another Other Girl. Boy concurrently falls in love with Another Girl, while falling out of love with Girl, who, may I remind you, happens to be Boy's Step-Sister. In the process, Boy turns down the opportunity to put it anywhere in the Girl, who, may I remind you, just so happens to be Boy's Step-Sister. Boy breaks up with Another Girl precisely because he fell in love with her. Boy dies. Girl subsequently is exposed and humiliated by Another Girl, all set to "Bittersweet Symphony." You know, that old chestnut. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

32: 8mm with Jim Campolongo

E

Just in time for the Fourth of July, Podcast Like It's 1999 brings you 1999's Most American film! Phil Iscove, Kenny Neibart and TV Writer Jim Campolongo (Station 19, White Collar) take a big, old Red, White and Blue dive into the world of... snuff films? Wait, what? We're releasing the snuff movie on Independence Day? (Well, let's see if we can make this work using my questionable understanding of the American Revolution almost entirely gleaned from Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton..) Nicolas Cage plays a private detective. He's kind of like the... George Washington (?) of this movie. He's tasked with helping an old lady (Martha Washington -- or maybe she represents the Colonies themselves?) with figuring out whether her husband (easy, King George III) had a young woman raped and murdered on film (okay, the young woman represents the collective victims of the Boston Massacre?!). On Cage's journey (Washington's March from Newport to Yorktown), he encounters many colorful characters (Rochambeau, Lafayette, other Hamilton references) and finds one odd fellow played by Joaquin Phoenix, willing to be his unlikely Right-Hand Man (HAMILTON HIMSELF! THIS IS WORKING!!!). Together they enter the dark, sordid world of underground fringe porn and snuff film (New Jersey) where they find the man responsible for the snuff film, Peter Stormare (General Howe). Joaquin meets his untimely end (not gonna gloat or anything, but...) and Cage, like Washington, wins the day, but loses a bit of himself in the process. Then he becomes President. Hosted on Acast. 31: The Thomas Crown Affair with Stacy Traub and Hunter Covington

E

To paraphrase the great 20th century philosopher Lisa Turtle, "What is art? Are we art? Is art art? And, most importantly, is The Thomas Crown Affair art?" Television writer/producers, and the subject of a recent Hollywood Reporter piece on their courtship, Stacy Traub (Glee, Blackish, SMILF) and Hunter Covington (It's Always Sunny, Alone Together, The Carmichael Show) join Phil and Kenny to discuss that very question. Does "The Thomas Crown Affair" rise to the level of the pieces its protagonist steals? Does it have the delicate touch of Manet's "The Banks of the Seine at Argenteuil?" Does it's scope and emotional heft more closely resemble Edward Burkne-Jones' "The Mirror of Venus?" Is Pierce Brosnan's mysterious nature mirrored in Magritte's "The Son of Man?" Is Rene Russo's effortless elegance akin to that of Monet's "San Giorgio Maggiore at Dusk?" Or is its simple structure and sophomoric execution more like Cassius Macellus Coolidge's "Dogs Playing Poker?" Tune in to the podcast to find out! Hosted on Acast.
