मित्रयोः मध्ये स्नेहः कथं भवेत् इति अनया कथया ज्ञायते । कदाचित् रामश्यामयोः मध्ये कलहे जाते, रामः श्यामं ताडितवान् । तदा श्यामः सिकतासु लिखितवान् - ‘अद्य मम प्रियवयस्यः मां ताडितवान्' इति । अन्यस्मिन् दिने जले निम्मज्जन्तं श्यामं यदा रामः रक्षितवान्, तदा श्यामः शिलाखण्डेन लिखति - ‘अद्य निमज्जन्तं मां मम प्रियवयस्यः रक्षितवान्' इति । किमर्थम् एकवारं सिकतासु, एकवारं शिलाखण्डेन लिखति इति पृष्टे श्यामः यत् अद्भुतम् उत्तरं ददाति तत् शृण्मः ।
(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)
The story teaches the value of true friendship. Once, when there was a fight between the friends, Rama and Shyam, Rama hit Shyam. Then, Shyam wrote in the sand: "Today my friend hit me." Another day, when Rama rescued Shyam from drowning, Shyam wrote on a stone: "Today my friend saved my life." We shall now listen to Shyam's reply when asked why he wrote in the sand once and on the stone another time.
