वीरत्यागी विश्वनाथदासः

तमिळुनाडुदेशीयः विश्वनाथदासः स्वीयैः देशभक्तिगीतैः,  नाटकैः, अभिनयैः च देशभक्तिम् जागरयति स्म । नाटकेषु 'वल्लीविवाहः' इति नाटके आङ्ग्लेयशासनं लक्षीकृत्य दासवर्यः गीतं गायति स्म येन कारणेन षट् मासान् संवत्सरान् वा यावत् कारागारवासः भवति स्म । कदाचित् दासवर्येण रङ्गं न प्रवेष्टव्यम् इति आङ्ग्लशासनेन आज्ञा कृता । तथापि वीरपुरुषः दासवर्यः रङ्गे निर्भयम् अगच्छत् । तस्मात् सः कारागारे स्थापितः । आङ्ग्लशासनं विरुद्ध्य दासवर्यः नवविंशतिवारं कारागृहम् अगच्छत् । १९४० तमे वर्षे डिसम्बरमासे सः गीतं गायन् पञ्चत्वं प्राप्नोत् । भारमातुः स्वतन्त्रतायै तदीयं जीवनपुष्पं समर्पितम् अभवत् ।

Viswanatha Das, a patriot from Tamil Nadu, awakened national spirit through his songs, plays, and performances. In one of his dramas titled Valli Vivaha, he sang a song targeting British rule, which led to his imprisonment for six months or even a year. At one point, the British authorities banned him from entering the stage. Yet, with fearless resolve, Viswanatha Das stepped onto the stage and was again imprisoned. In total, he was jailed nineteen times for opposing British rule. In December 1940, while singing a patriotic song, he passed away. His life was a fragrant offering to Mother India’s freedom.
