श्लोकात् परिवृत्तं जीवनम्

काशीराज्ये राज्ञः ब्रह्मदत्तस्य पुत्रः बोधिसत्त्वः यदा जन्म प्राप्तवान् तदा एव दिने काचित् दासी अपि कटाहकनामकाय पुत्राय जन्म दत्तवती ।  कालक्रमेण कटाहकः पार्श्वराज्यस्थस्य धनिकस्य कन्यया विवाहं कृतवान् । बोधिसत्त्वः कटाहकेन मेलितुं तस्य गृहं गच्छति । कटाहकः स्वपत्नीं बहुधा पीडयति इति ज्ञात्वा बोधिसत्त्वः तस्य पत्नीं उपदिशति "तव पतिः कुपितः चेत् एतं श्लोकम् उच्चैः पठ" इति । कटाहकेन पत्न्यां निन्दितायां सा तं श्लोकम् उच्चैः पठति । तं श्लोकं श्रुत्वा कटाहकः चिन्तितवान् यत् मम पत्नी मम वञ्चनापूर्णं पूर्ववृत्तान्तं ज्ञातवती । रहस्यप्रकाशनभीत्या सः तया सह उत्तमतया व्यवहर्तुम् आरब्धवान् ।
(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)

On the same day that the Bodhisattva, the son of King Brahmadatta, was born in the kingdom of Kashi, a maidservant also gave birth to a son named Katahaka. In time Katahaka married the daughter of a wealthy man in the neighboring kingdom. The Bodhisattva goes to his house to meet Katahaka Knowing that Katahaka often torments his wife, the Bodhisattva advises his wife, "If your husband is angry, read this verse aloud." When Katahaka rebukes his wife, she reads that verse aloud. After hearing that verse, Katahaka thought that my wife had learned of my cheating past. Afraid of revealing secrets, he began to treat her better.
