पूज्यः वृक्षः

पूर्वं सुमात्राद्वीपे वृद्धः तपस्वी कश्चन गुहायामेव तपः आचरन् ग्रामतः आगतानां कृषिकाणां मार्गदर्शनं करोति स्म । अन्ये असूयपराः तपस्विनः एकदा यदा वृद्धं तपस्विनं मारयितुं प्रयतन्ते, तदा कश्चन महान् सर्पः आकाशात् पतित्वा रक्षति । अपरक्षणॆ प्रसारितफणातः उद्भूताभिः शाखाभिः कश्चन वृक्षः प्रत्यक्षः भवति । पश्चात्तापम् अनुभवन्तः तपस्विनः - अस्मासु कश्चित् भवन्तं पीडयेत् चेत् अस्य वृक्षस्य शाखा खड्गः भूत्वा तं मारयेत् इति अकथयन् । ततः आरभ्य तज्जातीयवृक्षस्य शाखा एव परशोः दण्डत्वेन उपयुज्यते लोके ।

Once, on the island of Sumatra, an elderly sage who usually lived in caves, practised intense penance would guide the village farmers. Other jealous sages once when tried to kill him, a large serpant fell from the sky protecting him. Later, branches started emerging from the serpant’s hood and a tree became visible in its place. Realizing their mistake, the sages told – ‘If anyone tries to harm the elderly sage, then let the branches of this tree turn into a sword and kill him’. Hencefoth, the branches of that tree were used as swords in the world.
