अश्रुतपूर्वः श्लोकः

शाकडालः पाटलीपुत्रस्य नन्दनृपस्य सुशीलः सदाचारी च मन्त्री आसीत् । तस्य सप्त पुत्र्यः आसन् । नन्दराजः नूतनश्लोकान् श्रावयद्भ्यः प्रभूतं पारितोषिकं ददाति स्म । एतेन राजकोषागारमेव रिक्तं भवति इति विचिन्त्य शाकडालः कञ्चन उपायं करोति । कदाचित् कश्चन कविः यदा नूतनश्लोकं श्रावितवान् तदा शाकडालः 'सः नूतनश्लोकः न, मम पुत्रीणां मुखात् श्रुतवान् अस्मि' इति अवदत् । यदा ताः पुत्र्यः राजसभां प्रति आनीताः, तदा कविमुखतः श्लोकम् एकवारं श्रुत्वा झटिति एका तीक्ष्णमती पुत्री तं श्लोकम् उच्चारितवती । द्वितीया च कविना भगिन्या चेति द्विवारम् उक्तं तं श्लोकं श्रुत्वा विनालोपम् अश्रावयत् । एवमेव अन्याः अपि पुत्र्यः पुनरुच्चारितवत्यः । राजा तं कविं रिक्तहस्तेन प्रेषितवान् ।

Shakadala was a wise and virtuous minister of King Nanda of Pataliputra who had seven daughters. King Nanda used to generously reward poets who recited new verses, which eventually led to the depletion of the royal treasury. Concerned about this, Shakadala devised a plan. One day, when a poet recited a newly composed verse, Shakadala claimed, “This is not a new verse; I have heard it from my daughters”. When his daughters were summoned to the royal court, one of them, who had a sharp intellect, quickly recited the verse after hearing it just once from the poet. The second daughter, upon hearing the verse twice, repeated it flawlessly. Similarly, the other daughters also recited the verse perfectly. As a result, the king sent the poet away empty-handed.
