कश्चन नितरां धर्मनिष्ठः दानशीलः च आसीत् । कदाचित् राजभवनम् आगतवते तापसाय राजा अवदत् 'अहं भवते अत्यमूल्यं कमपि उपहारं ददामि' इति । तापसः 'आत्मनः अत्यन्तं प्रियं वस्तु मह्यं ददातु' इति अवदत् । राजा राज्यकोषं, राजभवनं, रथादिकं ददामि इति यदा वदत् तदा तत्सर्वं प्रजाजनानम् इति अवदत् तापसः । शरीरमपि मातापितृभ्यां दत्तम्, अतः तदपि भवतः न इत्युक्तं तापसेन । यदा राजा विस्मयेन मूढः जातः तदा तापसः अवदत् 'भवतः मनसि यः अहङ्कारः अस्ति सः पूर्णतः भवदीयः एव, तस्य दानं करोतु' इति । अनन्तरदिनतः राजा अनासक्तः योगी इव शासनं कृतवान् ।

A deeply righteous and generous ascetic visited the king, who offered him a precious gift. The ascetic requested the king’s most beloved possession. The king offered his treasury, palace, and chariot, but the ascetic reminded him these belonged to the people. Even his body was a gift from his parents. Perplexed, the king asked what he could give. The ascetic replied, “Your ego is entirely your own. Offer that”. From that day, the king ruled with detachment, like a true yogi.
