दोषः कस्य ?

चोरः सञ्जीवः न्यायाधीशं वदति 'यदा चौर्यं करोमि तदा मम माता कदापि मां न तर्जितवती । अतः मात्रे दण्डनं दीयताम्' इति । माता वदति 'पतिः मद्यपानार्थं धनं पृच्छति । अतः पतिं दण्डयतु' इति । पतिः वदति 'पिता मां बाल्यकाले एव त्यक्त्वा कारागृहं गतवान्' इति । पिता वदति 'कञ्चित् सज्जनम् आतङ्कवादिनः मारितवन्तः इति आरक्षकप्रमुखं निवेदितवान् । किन्तु भवान् एव आतङ्कवादी' इति उक्त्वा मां कारागृहं प्रेषितवान् । आरक्षकप्रमुखः उक्तवान् 'अहं केवलं तं गृहीत्वा अत्र आनीतवान् । परन्तु तस्य आजीवनं कारागृहवासरूपं दण्डनं भवता एव दत्तम् आसीत्' इति । एतत् श्रुत्वा न्यायाधीशः स्तब्धः जातः ।

The thief Sanjeeva told the judge, "When I committed theft, my mother never scolded me. So, she should be punished". The mother said, "My husband demanded money for drinking. Punish him instead". The husband said, "My father abandoned me in childhood and went to prison". The father said, "I once reported a terrorist to the police chief, but he falsely labeled me as the terrorist and sent me to prison". The police chief responded, "I only arrested him, but it was you who sentenced him to life imprisonment". Hearing this, the judge was left speechless.
