नम्रस्वभावः एव श्रेष्ठः

नद्याः तीरे एकः बलिष्ठः शाल्मलीवृक्षः स्थितः आसीत्, यः जलेन सिक्तः महाबलवान् अभवत् । तस्य समीपे अन्ये वृक्षाः अपि आसन्, किन्तु ते नम्राः आसन्, अर्धशरीरं जले निमग्नम् आसीत् । एकदा तीव्रेण प्रचण्डेन च वायुना बलवान् अपि शाल्मलीवृक्षः भूमौ अपतत् । परम् अन्येषां वृक्षाणां काऽपि हानिः न अभवत् । शाल्मलीवृक्षः आश्चर्यम् अनुभवन् अन्यान् वृक्षान् अपृच्छत् "कथं भवतां हानिः न अभवत्?" इति । ते अवदन् "भवान् अहङ्कारी अस्ति यः वायोः प्रभुतां न स्व्यकरोत् । अतः वायुः भवन्तम् अपातयत् । परं वयं नम्राः भूत्वा वायोः प्रभुतां स्वीकृतवन्तः । अतः सुरक्षिताः स्मः" इति । एतत् श्रुत्वा शाल्मलीवृक्षस्य ग्रीवा अवनता अभवत् ।
(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)

By the riverbank stood a mighty silk cotton tree, strengthened by the water that nourished it. Nearby, other trees grew, but they were humble, with half their trunks submerged in the water. One day, a fierce storm struck, toppling the powerful silk cotton tree. However, the other trees remained unharmed. Astonished, the fallen tree asked them, “How did you survive?”. They replied, “You were arrogant and refused to yield to the wind’s force, so it brought you down. We, however, bowed humbly before its power, and thus, we remained safe”. Hearing this, the fallen tree lowered its head in realization.
