मोहजाले पतितः प्राणी अविवेकपूर्णं निर्णयं करोति । मोहः जीवनस्य प्रगतिकर्तव्यायोः मार्गम् अवरुणद्धि । तादृशी स्थितिः एव अस्यां कथायां कस्यचित् वणिजः माधवस्य । यद्यपि सः श्रमशीलः निर्वञ्चनः परोपकारी च आसीत् मोहजालकारणेन स्वर्गप्राप्तिम् अपि बहुधा निराकरोति । सः विविधानि जन्मानि प्राप्य अपि विवेकस्तु न प्राप्तवान् । किमर्थम् ? कथम् ? इति इमां स्वारस्यकारीं कथां श्रुत्वा जानन्तु ।

A person trapped in the web of delusion makes irrational decisions. Delusion obstructs the path of life's progress and duty. Such is the situation in this story about a merchant named Madhava. Although he was hardworking, honest and benevolent, due to the web of delusion, he often rejected even the attainment of heaven. Despite experiencing various births, he never attained wisdom. Why?
