पात्रताम् अनुसृत्य

उद्यानपालकेन श्रावितेन पद्येन सन्तुष्टः राजा 'मनोभिलषितं याचतु' इति अवदत् । तदा उद्यानपालकः सहस्रं सुवर्णनाणकानि अयाचत् । किञ्चित् 'न्यूनं याचतु' इति यदा राजा अवदत् तदा एकं नाणकं ददातु इति अवदत् उद्यानपालकः । आश्चर्यस्तब्धः राजा अपृच्छत् 'किमर्थम् अनयोः मध्ये एकां संख्यां न उक्तवान्' इति । तदा सः अवदत् 'पुत्र्याः‌ विवाहार्थं धनम् अपेक्षितम् । प्रथमवारम् अहं भवतः स्थानं, पात्रतां व्यक्तित्वं च दृष्ट्वा सहस्रं नाणकानि अयाचम् । 'न्यूनं याचतु' इति यदा उक्तवान् तदा तु अहं मम स्थानं पात्रतां च परिगणय्य एकं नाणकम् अयाचम्' इति । लज्जितः राजा तस्मै स्वस्थान-व्यक्तित्व-पात्रतानुगुणं सहस्रं नाणकानि एव दत्तवान् ।

A gardener pleased the king with his poetry. Delighted, the king told him to ask for anything he desired. The gardener requested a thousand gold coins. The king, suggesting he ask for less, was surprised when the gardener then asked for just one coin. Curious, the king inquired about the drastic change. The gardener explained, “I initially considered your status, worthiness, and generosity, so I asked for a thousand coins. When you told me to ask for less, I reassessed my own status and worthiness, leading me to ask for just one”. Humbled, the king gave him the full thousand, recognizing the depth of his reasoning.
