धर्मस्य सारः

पूर्वं कश्चन राजुकुमारः सकलज्ञानसम्मन्नः बलवान् अधीतराजोचितविद्यः च असीत् । किन्तु धर्मलक्षणं तेन न ज्ञातम् । सः पण्डितान् अपृच्छत् ।  एकैकः एकैकप्रकारेण धर्मलक्षणं विवृतवान् येन राजकुमारस्य भ्रमः जातः । अन्ते सः कञ्चित् संन्यासिनं दृष्ट्वा स्वस्य समस्यां निवेदितवान् । संन्यासिना कारितायां क्रीडायां राजकुमारेण प्रतिस्पर्धिनि गौरवप्रधानं, मृदु व्यवहारः, दयापरार्थं, प्राणत्यागाय सज्जता इत्यादयः दर्शितः । एते एव धर्मस्य साराः इति सन्यसिनः कथनात् सन्तुष्टः राजकुमारः संन्यासिनं कृतज्ञतापूर्वकं प्रणम्य ततः निर्गतवान् ।

Once, there was a prince who was endowed with all kinds of knowledge, strong and well-versed in the sciences suitable for a king. However, he did not understand the essence of dharma (righteousness). He asked the scholars. Each one of them explained dharma in different ways, which confused the prince. Finally, he saw a Sanyasi and expressed his problem. In a game arranged by the Sanyasi, the prince displayed qualities such as prioritizing honor over competition, gentle behavior, compassion for others, and readiness to sacrifice his life. The Sanyasi then explained that these very qualities are the essence of dharma. Satisfied with the Sanyasi's explanation, the prince thanked him with gratitude and departed.
