दर्शनमात्रेण उपेक्षा न उचिता

पुरा ऋचीकनामा कश्चन ऋषिः, गाधिनाम्नः राज्ञः पुत्रीं सत्यवतीं परिणेतुम् ऐच्छन् माहाराजम् उपसर्प्य स्वस्य इङ्गितं निवेदितवान् । मुनये पुत्रीं दातुं राजा तु न इष्टवान् । बाह्यावलोकनतः अयं मुनिः सामान्यः इति विगणय्य राजा अस्मै साधारणं कार्यं ददामि इति अचिन्तयत् । ततः अवदत् यत् 'अस्माकं कुले विशिष्टा वरपरीक्षा अस्ति । यः एकतः श्यामकर्णान् सहस्रम् अश्वान् आनयेत् तस्मै एव पुत्री दीयेत' इति । राज्ञः अभिप्रायम् अवगतवता मुनिना वरुणदेवं तोषयितुं तपः कृतम्, एकतः श्यामकर्णाः सहस्रम् अश्वाः प्राप्ताः च । अतः एव कस्यचिदपि सामर्थ्यं दर्शनमात्रेण कदाचिदपि न उपेक्षेत इति ।

Long ago, a sage named Rchika wished to marry Satyavati, the daughter of King Gadhi. He approached the king and expressed his desire. However, the king was unwilling to give his daughter to the sage, judging him as ordinary based on appearance. Thinking to discourage him, the king set a difficult condition: “In our lineage, we have a unique test for suitors. Only one who brings a thousand dark-eared horses from one side shall receive my daughter.” Understanding the king’s intent, the sage performed penance to please the god Varuna and successfully obtained the thousand horses. Thus, one must never underestimate anyone’s capability based solely on appearance.
