Saint Tukaram lived in a village named Dehu near Pune. He would rise early in the morning, complete his daily rituals and without worrying about food or other worldly matters, he would take his veena and cymbals and head to a secluded mountain to engage in devotional singing and worship. Believing that the Supreme Soul resides in all living beings, he did not prevent birds from feeding in the grain fields. On occasion, he even distributed grain heaps, sent by the landowners, to the villagers.
