अपरीग्रहशीलता

'राजतरङ्गिणी' इत्यस्य श्रेष्ठस्य ग्रन्थस्य निर्माता काश्मीरदेशीयः कविः कल्हणः सर्वत्र ख्यातः किन्तु सः एकस्मिन् सामान्ये कुटीरे वसति स्म । कदाचित् उज्जयिनीतः आगतः पण्डितगणः कवेः वसतिविषयं दृष्ट्वा राज्ञः पुरतः स्वस्य असन्तोषं प्राकटयत् । राज्ञः अनुरोधेनापि सः कविः कस्यापि वस्तुनः स्वीकारं न अङ्गीकरोति इति पण्डिताः ज्ञातवन्तः । पण्डिताः यदा राज्ञा दत्तां सामग्रीं कवये अयच्छन् तदा कुपितः कविः राज्यत्यागं कर्तुम् ऐच्छत् । तदा पण्डिताः कवेः अपरिग्रहशीलतां दृष्ट्वा क्षमां अयाचन्त ।

Kalhana, the famous author of the great work Rajatarangini, was a poet from Kashmir. However, he lived in a simple hut. Once, a group of scholars who had come from Ujjain saw his humble dwelling and expressed their displeasure before the king. Despite the king's request, the poet refused to accept any gifts from anyone. When the scholars gave him some items on the king's behalf, the poet, angered by their actions, decided to leave the kingdom. The scholars, seeing his refusal to accept gifts, asked for his forgiveness.
