पक्षिभाषाभिज्ञः राजा देवदत्तः राजकुमारेण सह स्वभवनस्य वाटिकायां निवसत्या चटकया सह सम्भाषणं करोति स्म । कदाचित् चटका यदा आहारार्थं गता आसीत् तदा राजकुमारस्य मनसि दुर्विचारः उत्पन्नः, येन सः चटकशावकं मारितवान् । राजकुमारः एव स्वशावकं मारितवान् इति विचिन्त्य सा चटका चञ्च्वा राजकुमारस्य नेत्रयोः नाशं कृतवती । स्वपुत्रस्य राजकुमारस्य दोषं ज्ञात्वा यद्यपि सः राजा चटकायाः अपराधं क्षान्तवान् तथापि परस्परविरोधः यत्र स्यात् तत्र वासः अनुचितः इति मत्वा चटका देशान्तरं गन्तुम् इष्टवती ।

King Devadatta, who understood bird language, would converse with a sparrow in his palace garden. One day, the prince killed the sparrow's chick in anger. In revenge, the sparrow caused the prince to lose his eyesight. Although the king forgave the sparrow, the sparrow felt it was inappropriate to live in a place of mutual conflict and decided it was best for her to leave the kingdom.
