जन्मना वेदान्ती

कदाचित् प्रभाकरः नामा कश्चन गृहस्थः शङ्काराचार्यं दृष्ट्वा प्रार्थयते यत् तस्य द्वादशवर्षीयं जडबुद्धिपुत्रं  आशीर्वादेन अनुगृह्य अस्य जडबुद्धितां निवारयतु इति ।  शङ्काराचार्यः बालकेन सह सम्भाषणं कृत्वा ज्ञातवान् यत् एषः महात्मा अस्ति इति, अपि च पुत्रं मया सह प्रेषयतु इति वदति ।  पितुः अनुज्ञां प्राप्य शङ्कराचार्येण सह निगर्तः सः बालकः गच्छता कालेन महावेदान्ती जातः । आत्मस्वरूपादिकं हस्तस्थम् आमलकम् इव तस्य स्पष्टम् आसीत् इत्यतः शङ्काराचार्यः तस्य नाम कृतवान् - ‘हस्तामलकः' इति ।
(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)
One day, a man named Prabhakara met Shankaracharya and asked him to bless his twelve-year-old son, who was slow-witted. After speaking with the boy, Shankaracharya realized that the child was very special. He told Prabhakara to send the boy with him. With his father's permission, the boy left with Shankaracharya. Over time, the boy became a great scholar of Vedanta. He understood the true nature of the self, just like someone clearly seeing a fruit in their hand. Because of this, Shankaracharya gave him the name "Hastamalaka" (meaning "the one with the fruit in his hand").
