देवालयेषु द्वारतोरणस्य मध्यभागे (देवविग्रहं परितः) मकरतोरणं भवति । तन्मध्ये राक्षसमुखं किञ्चन दृश्यते । तस्य राक्षसस्य नाम किम्? तत् मुखं किमर्थं स्थाप्यते तत्र इति विषयम् अधिकृत्य स्कन्दमहापुराणे या कथा तां कथाम् इदानीं शृण्वन्तु ।

In temples, at the center of the gateway arch (around the deity’s image), there is a Makara Torana. In its middle, a demon’s face is seen. What is the name of that demon? Why is that face placed there? Concerning this subject, the Skanda Mahāpurāṇa narrates a story—let us now hear that tale.
