चरणचिह्नचिन्तनम्

कदाचित् वनप्रदेशे तृणसेवनमग्नात् मेषसमूहात् एकः मेषशावकः पृथक् जातः । शावकः एकाकी स्वगृहमार्गस्य अन्वेषणं यदा आरब्धवान् तदा निर्झरस्य समीपे विद्यमानासु वालुकासु वनराजस्य सिंहस्य सुचारूणि पदचिह्नानि अपश्यत् । एकाग्रतया भक्त्या च वनराजस्य पदचिह्नानि पश्यन्तं शावकं जम्बूकः, वृकः, व्याघ्रः च यथाक्रमं दृष्ट्वा सौजन्येन व्यवहृत्य ततः पलायनं अकुर्वन् । साक्षात् सिंहः यदा शावकस्य दृढं भक्तिभावं अपश्यत् तदा गजम् आदिशत् 'मेषशावकं पृष्ठे आरोप्य वनविहारं कारयतु यत्र वृक्षाणां मृदूनि पर्णानि, स्वादूनि फलानि च खादेत्' इति । वनराजभक्तेः एतत् पारितोषिकम् ।

Once, in a forest region, a lamb got separated from its flock while grazing. As it wandered alone in search of its way home, it spotted the beautifully marked footprints of the king of the jungle—the lion—on the sandy banks of a stream. The lamb, filled with deep reverence and devotion, focused intently on the footprints. Observing the lamb's unwavering devotion, a jackal, a wolf, and a tiger approached the lamb but then fled, sensing its sincere admiration for the lion. When the lion himself noticed the lamb's steadfast devotion, he commanded an elephant, saying, ‘Carry this lamb on your back and let it roam freely in the forest where it can feed on the soft leaves of trees and sweet fruits’. This was the reward for the lamb's deep devotion to the king of the jungle.
