किं व्यर्थव्ययेन आडम्बरेण वा?

कश्चन राजा उत्तमं शासनं कुर्वन् चिन्तितवान् यत् मरणानन्तरम् अपि जनैः स्मरणीयः स्याम् इति । अतः सः रमणीये उद्याने एकं सुन्दरं मण्डपं स्मारकसहितं स्थापयितुम् इच्छुः मन्त्रिणः पुरतः प्रस्तावम् अकरोत्, सभासदाः सहर्षं स्वीकृतवन्तः । तदा प्रधानमन्त्री शिलाखण्डं दर्शयित्वा अपृच्छत् यथा शिलायाः उत्पत्तिः, अवस्थां भविष्यत् वा ज्ञातुं न शक्यते । सर्वमपि अस्थिरम्। अस्माकं जीवनं तु उत्तमकार्यार्थं स्यात् न तु स्मारकादिकेन्द्रितम् इति।तस्य वक्तव्यं श्रुत्वा राजा सहमतिं दर्शयन् आडम्बरादिचिन्तनं व्यर्थम् इति अमन्यत ।

A king who ruled well thought that would be remembered by the people even after his death. So he proposed to the minister that a beautiful pavilion be erected in the beautiful garden with a monument, and the members readily agreed. Our lives should be about doing well, not about memorializing. Hearing his statement, the king agreed and considered the idea of ostentation futile.
