सर्वे अपि अपत्यस्य जन्मदिनं निमित्तीकृत्य किमपि उपायनं यच्छन्ति । तत् सर्वं लौकिकम् उपयानं भवति प्रायशः । अस्यां कथायां पुत्र्याः जन्मदिननिमित्तं पिता तिस्रः पेटिकाः ददाति । किं भवितुम् अर्हति तासु पेटिकासु ? कीदृशानि उपायनानि ? लौकिकानि वा तत्त्वबोधकानि वा ? आगच्छन्तु कथां शृण्मः । वयम् अपि तादृशानि उपायनानि एव बालेभ्यः दातुं प्रयत्नं कुर्मः

Everyone gives certain gifts on a child’s birthday. The gifts are usually worldly. In this story, the father gives three boxes on the occasion of his daughter's birthday.
