Ep 413VEGAS 2024 Recap: Stand-out Management Q&As, Presentations and 1x1s with Maj Soueidan (GeoInvesting) and Mathieu Martin (Rivemont MicroCap Fund)

There was so much that happened at the Planet MicroCap Showcase: VEGAS 2024, that I thought it would be fun to do a post-event debrief. Joining me were arguably the two busiest people at the event besides our staff, Maj Soueidan from GeoInvesting and Mathieu Martin from the Rivemont MicroCap Fund, who between them did 14 fireside chats with management teams, attended additional presentations on top of that, and another 20-25 1x1s combined on Thursday. In our chat today, we talked about what Q&As and companies stood out to them, as well as differential insights gained from the 1x1s/Q&As they participated in. My guest on the show today is Chris Abbott, CIO of 1035 Capital Management. As it states on the 1035 Capital Management website, "our passion is to uncover these opportunities [companies undergoing fundamental business improvements that should drive future stock returns] before the ramifications of a positive catalyst become evident to the majority of investors, a concept we call “front running the black box.” This quote encapsulates everything we talk about today: the idea of eclectic value, intelligent diversification, MicroCap turnarounds, and we dive into a few stocks that exemplify some of these themes, as well as Chris' 'Small Cap Core' investment strategy. Ep 410Why Are We Talking about Up-listing / Cross-listing / Delisting and Why Should We Care with Joe Lucosky, Managing Partner at Lucosky Brookman

My guest on the show today is Joe Lucosky, Managing Partner at Lucosky Brookman. You might take one look at this title and might not think this is for you; as an investor you might wonder why should you care whether a company decides to uplist, cross-list or even delist? What do these terms even mean? Why is the company wasting their time even considering any of these corporate actions? If you've ever asked yourself this question, whether you're an investor or even an issuer, this is without a doubt the episode for you. Even if you've never thought about these topics, I think you'll find our conversation fascinating. In the world of Micro and Nano-caps, this conversation is happening in every boardroom: should we uplist to the NASDAQ from OTC Markets? What's this new U.S. Listings program at CBOE? Should we delist to the OTCQX, QB or the Pinks? Is it too soon for us to Uplist? Should we cross-list onto OTC or NASDAQ? Should we do a simultaneous raise with uplist or cross-list? How will our investors react to this? I've known Joe for years and has given multiple keynotes on this topic at our recent investor conferences, including a Keynote Q&A with Erik Sloane from the CBOE at the Planet MicroCap Showcase: VEGAS on April 30, 2024. You don't want to miss that. This is Joe's topic, his bread and butter, and he truly enjoys helping companies understand what makes the most sense for them. I think we do a good job covering every angle on the topic, but look, I invite you to give it a listen, and would love your feedback on this one. Ep 403Tier One Quality MicroCap Index and MS MicroCap Cliffnotes with Maj Soueidan (Founder and Editor) and Jan Svenda (Senior Equity Analyst) at GeoInvesting

My guest on the show today is Maj Soueidan, Founder and Editor, and Jan Svenda, Senior Equity Analyst, at GeoInvesting. I welcomed back my friends, Maj and Jan, to discuss their latest venture, MS MicroCap Cliffnotes and their Tier One Quality MicroCap Index. As some of you may know, we run an index as well called the Planet MicroCap Index that we use for educational purposes only to better understand how the general MicroCap market is performing with specific rules that allow for smaller, relatively illiquid names, growthy/pre-revenue/unprofitable names to be included. Maj and Jan launched an index, where, as it states on the MS Cliffnotes website, "the qualification of a stock to be added to the index is determined by quality, valuation, price momentum indicators, multi-bagger potential, qualitative analysis and market cap," and, "the rebalancing of the MSM index occurs on an active basis, not just quarterly or monthly." I think indices like this are necessary because you could take one look at our index at Planet MicroCap, and you'd be correct to think, that the MicroCap space has been in the doldrums for 2+ years. However, when you look at an index that assesses more qualitative factors, you'll see that the Tier One Quality index, for example, has a current return of 27.60% and average peak return of 76.84%. I wanted to better understand Maj and Jan's criteria for inclusion, as well as what differentiates their index from it being a "model portfolio." Ep 394Modular Medical (NASDAQ: MODD): Developing a Next Generation Insulin Pump

My guest on the show today is James (Jeb) Besser, CEO of Modular Medical, Inc. (NASDAQ: MODD). Modular Medical, Inc. (Nasdaq:MODD) is a development-stage medical device company that is working towards launching the next generation of insulin delivery technology. Using its patented technologies, the company seeks to eliminate the tradeoff between complexity and efficacy, thereby making top quality insulin delivery both affordable and simple to learn. As Jeb discusses in the interview, despite many tech companies trying to find "next generation" solutions for an insulin pump, it's only been recently that there's been some momentum in the delivery technology itself vs. a smart phone-related monitoring solution. That is why I invited Jeb on today to discuss the following: The history of insulin pump innovation Why patients the standard of care pump is so complicated Modular Medical's delivery technology and what makes it unique; and, Next steps for commercialization For more information about Modular Medical, please visit: https://modular-medical.com/ This podcast was recorded and is being made available by SNN, Inc. Ep 393How Regulations Affecting MicroCaps, Tax Loss Selling, Dark Stocks, 2023 Takes, Looking Ahead at 2024 with Sam Namiri, Partner and Portfolio Manager at Ridgewood Investments

My guest on the show today is Sam Namiri, Partner and Portfolio Manager at Ridgewood Investments. Today's conversation is Sam and I catching up on the year that was in 2023, and the year ahead in 2024. He's a frequent guest on the show, and was one of my first friends when I started in this business all the way back in 2011. I always enjoy hearing his perspective on the MicroCap markets as he's one the hardest working investors I know: Sam turns over every rock, will take as many meetings as possible, and works tirelessly to find that next great MicroCap stock. Ep 392SEC Approves First SPOT Bitcoin ETF with Caitlin Cook, Hxro Network / @Deadcaitbounce

My guest on the show today is Caitlin Cook, better known as @DeadCaitBounce on Twitter/X, Head of Marketing and Communications at Hxro Network. This is a special edition pod because we had some breaking news - on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, the SEC approved the listing and trading of a number of spot bitcoin exchange-traded product (ETP) shares. Caitlin is my go-to person for all things crypto, whose sole focus is educating the masses about crypto. From when we worked on her podcast, The Deadcaitbounce Experience, almost every guest made the same point that one way to bridge the gap between early crypto adopters and traditional finance, or "TradeFi", would be when Bitcoin ETFs were approved by the SEC. Well, the day has come, despite the very appropriate crypto-nian (with a "c") social media blunder on January 9th, we now have Bitcoin ETFs, and Caitlin and I break it all down. Ep 391LuxUrban Hotels (NASDAQ: LUXH): Hotel Company Taking Advantage of the Dislocation in Commercial Real Estate

My guest on the show today is Shanoop Kothari, Co-CEO and CFO of LuxUrban Hotels, Inc. (NASDAQ: LUXH). LuxUrban Hotels Inc. utilizes a long-term lease, asset-light business model to acquire and manage a growing portfolio of short-term rental properties in major metropolitan cities. The Company’s future growth focuses primarily on seeking to create “win-win” opportunities for owners of dislocated hotels, including those impacted by COVID-19 travel restrictions, while providing favorable operating margins. The LuxUrban business model is a little different than your traditional hotel operator. The nuance, as Shanoop describes, is that they enter master leases with hotel owners, where they have control of the asset, just don't own the asset. We dive deeper into what this means, as well as: Why the company decided to focus solely on the hotel business Nature of LuxUrban's relationship with Wyndham; why they chose them over, say a booking.com for just the reseller aspect of the business Whether its getting harder or easier to get more leases; in essence, is it getting easier or harder to scale the business; and, Shanoop's 3-5 year vision for the company For more information about LuxUrban Hotels, please visit: https://luxurbanhotels.com/ This podcast was recorded and is being made available by SNN, Inc. Ep 390Legal Special Situations Investing with Lionel, Editor of Valorem Research Newsletter

My guest on the show today is Lionel, Editor of Valorem Research Newsletter. I think Lionel (he'd prefer to stay anonymous) might be one of my favorite podcast guests: his appearances on Andrew Walker's Yet Another Value Podcast have to question all my life choices and perhaps re-evaluate getting a law degree, if only so I can totally understand everything he talks about. In our conversation today, Lionel and I talk about how and why he finds legal special situations so interesting, as well as high level overviews of recent cases he discusses in WAY more depth on Andrew's show, his overall take on anti-trust / M&A and his thoughts on the topic for 2024. Ep 386Thermal Energy (TSX-V: TMG) (OTCQB: TMGEF): Energy Efficiency and Emission Reduction Solutions to Large Multinationals

My guest on the show today is William Crossland, President & CEO of Thermal Energy International, Inc. (TSX-V: TMG) (OTCQB: TMGEF). Thermal Energy International Inc. provides energy efficiency and emissions reduction solutions to Fortune 500 and other large multinational companies. The company's value proposition is to help save their customers money by reducing their fuel use and cutting their carbon emissions. Thermal Energy's proprietary and proven solutions can recover up to 80% of energy lost in typical boiler plant and steam system operations while delivering a high return on investment with a short, compelling payback, according to the company's website. As William jokes in the interview, Thermal Energy is a 20-year overnight success story. When he joined the company and took over as CEO in 2009, William's focus was turning a profit, where, just before the pandemic, was able to accomplish that, 30% compounded annual growth rate and $25 million in revenues. While the pandemic was difficult for all of us, the company had to fight through a challenging environment, which we discuss in the interview, but has since started reporting, in the last few months, more projects and orders coming in. For example, since recording the interview, Thermal Energy announced a, "$3.7 Million Heat Recovery Order from One of Europe’s Largest Food and Drink Producers" on December 7, 2023. We also discuss: How Thermal Energy works with their multinational client base Their full suite of solutions, and; William's 3-5 year vision for the company For more information about Thermal Energy, please visit: https://www.thermalenergy.com/ This podcast was recorded and is being made available by SNN, Inc. My guest on the show today is Mathieu Martin, Portfolio Manager at Rivemont Investments and Editor of the Stocks & Stones Newsletter. In the Summer 2023 issue of the Planet MicroCap Review, Filip contributed an article titled, "ESG Investing 101," documenting his investing process, and invited him on the podcast to dive deeper into ESG, Cleantech, Agrotech and why ESG is still a megatrend that investors shouldn't ignore. Ep 379Shelly Group (Frankfurt: SLYG): Smart Home Products for the DIY Community

My guest on the show today is Wolfgang Kirsch, Co-CEO of Shelly Group (SLYG.F). Shelly Group is an asset-light European smart home device designer, manufacturer, and distributor that has developed a smart home platform under the Shelly brand. The company specializes in the design, production, and distribution of smart, innovative, open-architecture, high-quality IoT home products (Smart Home). Its main business is a growing line of products under the brand “Shelly." I was introduced to the Shelly Group by a good friend and colleague, Adi Soglowek, thank you Adi, and had the pleasure of seeing Co-CEO, Wolfgang Kirsch, present the company at Ian Cassel's MicroCapClub Leadership Summit. At the time, I thought to myself, interesting presentation, but didn't quite understand how the "Shelly", Shelly Group's smart home product, was unique and different amongst the swath of smart home products we have here in the states. This is the reason I love this show because Wolfgang cleared up my confusion real quick, and we dove deep into how and why the Shelly Group chose this pathway for the products themselves and ultimately marketing to the DIY (do it yourself) community. We also discuss: Marketing strategy to break into the US market and how the company hopes to achieve its goal of $200M in revenues by 2026. With that, please enjoy my conversation with Wolfgang Kirsch, Co-CEO of Shelly Group. Ep 378Quantitative MicroCap Investing with ”GUTS” with Ryan Telford @Rtelford_invest

My guest on the show today is Ryan Telford, Private Investor and better known as @Rtelford_invest on Twitter/X. We've been following each other for a while, and after having the chance to meet Ryan, during lunch at SmallCap Discoveries event in Vancouver, and learning a little bit about MicroCap quant strategy, I invited him on to share his strategy. The format for this interview is a little different - Ryan put together a great presentation called, "Quantitative MicroCap Investing with 'GUTS'", and I wanted him to run with it. Also, the video version of today's pod, which is up on the Planet MicroCap YouTube Channel, has a visual of the presentation. It's very informative, and in my opinion, Ryan does a phenomenal job showcasing a strategy that, who knows, could work for you when developing your MicroCap investing philosophy. Ep 377Vox Royalty (TSX: VOXR) (NASDAQ: VOXR): Value Play in the Mining Royalty Space

My guest on the show today is Kyle Floyd, Chairman and CEO of Vox Royalty Corp. (TSX: VOXR) (NASDAQ: VOXR). Vox is a returns focused mining royalty company with a portfolio of over 60 royalties and streams spanning eight jurisdictions. The Company was established in 2014 and has since built unique intellectual property, a technically focused transactional team and a global sourcing network which has allowed Vox to target the highest returns on royalty acquisitions in the mining royalty sector. Since the beginning of 2020, Vox has announced over 25 separate transactions to acquire over 50 royalties. Investing is difficult, investing in junior mining companies, in my opinion, like biotech, is extremely hard. Picking the right companies comes down to understanding a multitude of factors that requires some expertise in geology (or biology). For the mining industry, the royalty and streaming provides a different vehicle for exposure to the space, and that's why I invited Kyle on to better understand the royalty and streaming business. My guest on the show today is David Bastian, Chief Investment Officer of Kingdom Capital Advisors. I met David at Ian Cassel's MicroCap Leadership Summit a couple weeks ago, where he brought the house down with is comical (albeit serious) pitch on The Children's Place $PLCE. Safe to say, David was tailor made to be a great guest on my podcast, and he does not disappoint. My guest on the show today is David Baeckelandt, Head of Client Relations SuMi TRUST - the U.S. arm for Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management, Inc. Dave reached out to me about a month ago to see if I had an interest in doing an episode about Japanese MicroCaps. I got this email as I was getting geared up for our conference in Vancouver, our first event outside the U.S., which is some fun irony considering our audience is continuing to look globally for quality opportunities. I said yes to Dave, he sent me some great materials making the case for Japanese MicroCaps, and I'm excited to share our conversation all about it. Ep 374UGE International (TSX-V: UGE) (OTCQB: UGEIF): Develops Midscale Solar and Energy Storage Project

My guest on the show today is Nick Blitterswyk, CEO of UGE International Ltd. (TSXV: UGE) (OTCQB: UGEIF). UGE develops, owns, and operates commercial and community solar and battery storage projects. Their distributed energy solutions deliver cheaper, cleaner energy to businesses and consumers with no upfront cost, and with over 500MW of global experience, they are working daily to power a more sustainable world, according to the company's website. UGE recently presented at the MicroCapClub Leadership Summit, a phenomenal event by the way, where CEO, Nick Blitterswyk, did a presentation and Q&A with an investor friend of mine, Jeff Kowal. It was a packed room with some of the best MicroCap investors in the game, and Nick did a great job, which by my definition means clearly describing what the company does, prospects for future growth, addressing potential risks that could impede that growth, and vision for the company. I first interviewed Nick in November 2016 (that's about 7 years ago now), and have done six short-form interviews with him since then. I invited him on this podcast as a showcase of how companies evolve, how difficult it can be to refine a company's message despite thinking it's simple, and the importance of recognizing the need to change your business strategy. Furthermore, we also discuss: UGE's pivot to "Full Life Cycle" approach to developing and owning community solar projects The company's backlog and typical project sizes And, of course, Nick's vision for the company With that, please enjoy my conversation with Nick Blitterswyk, CEO of UGE International Ltd.
