Addictions are the response to our unwillingness to just be present with the pain, the emptiness that occurs when we touch God. Because of our experience of time, we've lost the sense of what it means to be truly at peace and so when it reaches us, it feels like pain. Our job is to allow ourselves to be in this empty state until the tears are through and all is left is Silence.
