Ep 1287TAA 3 - Stats for Identifying Underappreciated Pitchers

The Approach Angle Nate Schwartz (@_nateschwartz) and Kyle Bland (@blandalytics) discuss the importance of WHIP and how it can be analyzed with Str-ICR to find underappreciated pitchers. They talk about the basis of WHIP: first, why it's an important stat, and how it can be forgotten when analyzing a pitcher. Is it still important in today's analysis? Then, the discussion pivots to the most volatile part of WHIP, batted ball results. Ideal Contact Rate (ICR) groups all contact that's bad for a pitcher, and is an easier way to understand the quality of contact a pitcher is giving up. The two discuss the significance of finding the right batted balls to measure, and how ICR can be combined with Strike Rate as a proxy for estimating WHIP. This concept comes from an article Kyle wrote two years ago (https://pitcherlist.com/introducing-str-icr/). Finally, they mention players who stand out between their 2025 Str-ICR and 2026 projected WHIP. Players mentioned: Mick Abel, Jose Soriano, Cade Horton, Spencer Strider, George Kirby Join Our Discord & Support The Show: PL+ | PL Pro - Get 15% off Yearly with code PODCASTProud member of the Pitcher List Fantasy Baseball Podcast Network Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 1284K ꓘ 186 - Guys We Have to Have

Keep or Kut - Pete (@PeteBBaseball) and Chad (chadyoung.bsky.social) go three three ADP tiers and identify players they simply have to have in keeper leagues. These are players whose ADP represents a value this year and have potential to be great keepers, even if you have to pay an increasing cost for them, next year. We used FanTrax ADP and here are the rules we followed: One player each from inside the top 100 ADP, one from ADP 101-200, and one outside the top 200. Players should have keeper value, but they also have to be valuable this year. You are competing, so you aren't going to punt a pick and a roster spot to stash Jesús Made for a year or more. 4:35 - Pete goes pitching in the top 100, targeting Logan Gilbert for the possibility to combine his history as a 200-inning workhorse with his newfound 2025 K-rate. 10:04 - Chad wants to buy the dip on Jackson Merrill, whose ADP would make him a multi-year keeper if he rebounds like we expect. 18:06 - Chad sticks in the outfield, this time going for Heliot Ramos, whose ADP is just straight too low. 26:55 - Another outfielder, this time from Pete who loves the power from Daulton Varsho, even if you get nothing else from him. 36:39 - Once we get outside the top 200, a lot of prospects are interesting, but we tried to stay away from them, and Pete finds himself targeting Francisco Alvarez. 43:21 - Chad wraps things up with a look at why Jackson Holliday is on multiple of his rosters. The group also breaks down auction values specifically: establishing how playing time is such a strong tool and the balance between playing time & talent. Ep 1281K ꓘ 185 - The Vagaries of Spring Training

Keep or Kut - Pete (@PeteBBaseball) and Chad (chadyoung.bsky.social) are back at it and today they are looking at how much things can change over the course of spring training. From keeper decisions to drafts to FAAB, you need to be constantly adjusting when news - especially bad news - breaks in Spring. 2:00 - Zack Wheeler's value has moved quite a bit without much happening, and Chad and Pete aren't aligned on how much it should have moved. Plus, we discuss other injured pitchers and what we plan to do with them. 15:19 - How much did the Jurickson Profar suspension mess up Chad's outfields and what should he do about it? There aren't really any newly-interesting OF. 20:40 - Chad thinks there is real upside in the Rockies outfield, but you may not be able to roster more than one of those upside plays. 28:15 - Even as things are changing, it is much harder to trust the good (breakout performances and velocity gains) than the bad (injuries and suspensions) and that has implications for the depth of the player pool. 31:19 - In weekly lineup leagues, remember you don't need to trust everyone on your roster from day one - you can stash someone as long as you have a lineup you feel good about. 37:40 - Is this a good time to hit the trade market? It's much easier in keeper leagues than redraft. 49:28 - Looking at some intriguing Spring prospects: Spencer Jones, Joshua Baez, and Mick Abel. Ep 1278TBG 73 - Charlie Brown's All Stars with Ben Lindbergh

Ellen Adair and Ben Lindbergh discuss "Charlie Brown's All Stars," grading it on the 20-80 scouting scale. Ellen welcomes Ben, who discusses his lifelong love of "Peanuts" and getting to meet creator Charles M. Schulz! They introduce and summarize the cartoon (8:31) and review the 20-80 scouting scale (11:45) before hearing about Ben's fictional scouting director and real-life experience with the Sonoma Stompers (12:51). With Amount of Baseball (15:35), Ben favorably considers that there is more baseball in this 25 minute cartoon than hockey in six episodes of "Heated Rivalry," and discusses the "Effectively Wild" tradition of dubbing films "baseball movies." Ellen finds this cartoon does the little things right. In Baseball Accuracy (19:31), they discuss the lack of an opposing team and float competing theories, whether it is magical realism charged by Charlie Brown's emotional life, or perhaps baseball ghosts. They also discuss the very long hang time for the ball in the initial sequence, and the implications for Charlie Brown's range. Ellen dives deep into the stats Linus provides, considering them on an imagined per-game basis. They discuss clutch-ness and the power of belief at various levels. In Storytelling (38:20), they discuss various non sequiturs, editing oddities, and the interlude to Snoopy's imaginative plane. They also examine the depiction of various different kinds of baseball fans, and the lack of hustle on Charlie Brown's team, and some inconsistencies in character point of view. An intermission with Ben Lindbergh features his answers to the Nine Things (56:20) , including his choice three baseball players and three baseball moments--no spoilers! Our intrepid scouts return with the Score Tool (1:28:20), enjoying the music provided by the Vince Guaraldi Sextet. In Acting (1:31:40), they discuss the quality of the distinctive charm of the performances, which as a whole are truly creative of a style rather than interpretive of life. Particular shout-out to Peter Robbins as Charlie Brown, Christopher Shea's liquid l's, Sally Dryer's pronunciation of "uniform," and Director Bill Melendez as decades of Snoopy and Woodstock. In the Delightfulness of Catcher Character (1:38:22) the scouts parse a fondness for Schroeder with his excellence as a lovable team leader or helpfulness to his pitcher. Delightfulness of Announcer (1:43:21) offers no announcer, but some discussion of the possible existence of an official scorer. Lack of Misogyny (1:44:26) balances Charlie Brown standing up to a misogynist league policy with the blame for the all-gender ridicule of Charlie Brown landing solely at the girls' feet. No spoilers on the following segments: Yes or No (1:50:49), Six Degrees of Baseball (1:56:01), Favorite Moment (1:58:11), Least Favorite Moment (2:00:31), Scene That We'd Like to See (2:05:34), and Dreamiest Player and Favorite Performance (2:12:06).
