Ep 67E67 | No One Teaches This Stuff in Farming—Until It Costs You
Episode Summary This week I reflect on some tough lessons I learned through mistakes and financial stress from our farm operation. Drawing from my personal experiences and from conversations with other farmers, this episode emphasizes that pain without reflection can lead to repeating costly mistakes. You'll hear about refinancing, farm financial strain, and how past hardship can either shape better decisions or become tuition paid twice. Learn how to capture lessons before they repeat, build resilience, and create practical systems to move forward with clarity and confidence. In this week's episode I share lessons learned from our farming operation: The only real mistake is one you don't learn from The pain of change vs. the pain of staying the same Lessons learned from refinancing and financial hardship on the farm Practical mindset shifts for avoiding repeat challenges The importance of implementing changes before we're in crisis—not after. Ep 66E66 | How We Handle Grain Marketing On Our Operation
Episode Summary This week on Pioneer Mindset, I discuss how we go about grain marketing for our operation. This episode reinforces that smart grain marketing isn't about complexity, but about clarity, consistency, and intentional decision-making that safeguards both family legacies and farm finances. In this week's episode I share about grain marketing: Farmers often face the temptation of delayed decisions — thinking they'll have more time later — but proactive planning creates confidence and better results. Taking advantage of different marketing tools are key to strategizing and taking advantage of different opportunities. The best farmers — don't just hope for high prices; they use a mix of strategies to manage risk and profit intentionally. The emotional weight of grain marketing can lead to missed opportunities or risky decisions; removing emotion is key. Ep 64E64 | Farming Realities and Business Mindset with Josh Pretzer: Part 1
Episode Summary This week I would like to welcome Josh Pretzer from Singular Agronomics to the podcast for two part conversation where we dive deep into the realities of farming profitability, landowner relationships, cash flow management, business mindset, and personal growth as a farmer and entrepreneur. Profitability reality checks: Use simple financial breakdowns (like crop insurance guarantees and per-acre projections) to help landowners or partners understand the actual margins in farming. Farmer–Landowner relationships: Farming is a business partnership, not just a lease or service. Healthy relationships require communication, trust, and shared long-term goals. It's okay to walk away from toxic partnerships. Managing people = Managing profit: Building strong relationships and fulfilling promises makes businesses thrive in no matter what industry you're in. Ep 63E63 | Let Go to Grow: How Control Can Kill Business Growth
Episode Summary In this episode of Pioneer Mindset, I dive into a challenge many farmers and ag business owners face—letting go in order to grow. Whether it's delegating a task to your dad, a teammate, or your hired help, growth often requires releasing control. But that doesn't come easy when you're deeply invested in the results and have your own way of doing things. From my own experiences on our farm operation, I share the lessons I've learned about communication breakdowns, the fear of mistakes, and the leadership mindset it takes to truly grow. Delegation isn't just about handing off tasks—it's about owning the outcome, guiding your team, and embracing the growing pains that come with real progress. This one's a little raw and real, and hopefully it hits home for anyone trying to break out of traditional molds and lead their operation forward with clarity and intention. Ep 62E62 | The High Cost of Cutting the Wrong Corners
Episode Summary As the 2025 crop season kicks into gear, it's tempting to trim expenses wherever possible. But in this episode, I dive into why investing in the right tools and data—like soil testing, agronomic consulting, and financial clarity—can make the difference between just getting by and growing a profitable, sustainable operation. In this week's episode I share my thoughts of cutting expenses vs important investments: Why some costs—like soil tests and expert guidance—are not expenses, but investments How soil tests improve decision-making around fertilizer, seed, and input efficiency Mindset of valuing tangible investments (like equipment) over data or advice Parallels between agronomic planning and financial planning for your farm Why waiting too long to invest in tools for clarity can be too late Resources & Links: To learn more about how I can help you achieve financial clarity and confidence through essential tools and systems, check out my free training here! Ep 61E61 | Profit-Driven Grain Marketing Tips for 2025 with Zane Abner
Episode Summary This week, I welcome back Zane from Tredas to the podcast! We dive back into a topic that's often overlooked but absolutely vital—grain marketing. We dig into why many farmers are hesitant to adopt futures, options, or work with marketing advisors, often due to fear, past negative experiences, or a lack of understanding. The conversation highlights how marketing can shift an operation from reactive to proactive, allowing farmers to make more business-minded, less emotional decisions. As planting season ramps up, we also discuss practical ways to stay focused on your marketing plan, even when things get busy in the field. In this week's episode, Zane shares some key insights into grain marketing: Education and asking questions are critical to overcoming hesitation and gaining confidence in marketing strategies. It's important to separate your experience with a person from the validity of the tool—don't let one bad advisor ruin a good strategy. Successful grain marketing starts with knowing your breakevens and cost of production—everything else builds from there. As planting begins, remember your marketing window is open—don't let busy season cause you to miss opportunities. Episode Summary In this week's episode, I explore the balance between self-care and selfishness.Self-care is about maintaining alignment with the season of life you're in—whether it's growing a business, raising a family, or both—so that you can show up as the best version of yourself.By taking care of yourself the right way, you create a positive ripple effect on those around you and your business. In this week's episode I share some thoughts on how it isn't selfish to take time for yourself for self-care: Balance is Seasonal: Life demands change, and self-care should align with your current phase. Sustainable Growth: Burnout happens when self-care is neglected. Prioritizing yourself ultimately benefits your family, business, and overall quality of life. Ep 57E57 | Balancing Passion and Profit in Agriculture
Episode Summary In this episode of Pioneer Mindset, we dive into the undeniable passion that farmers, ranchers, and business owners have for their work. Whether it's planting crops, raising livestock, or running a business, we often find joy in the work itself. But at what cost? Are we sacrificing too much—our time, money, or even our family life—to keep doing what we love? I talk about the balance between passion and responsibility, the risks of taking our dedication too far, and the importance of shifting our priorities to create a sustainable and fulfilling future. If you've ever found yourself struggling to balance work with life, this episode is for you. In this week's episode I share (include keyword from title): Why farmers, ranchers, and business owners love what they do The sacrifices we make to keep doing what we love—time, money, and freedom The contradiction between working hard for a better future and missing out on the present How to shift your mindset and priorities for a more sustainable life The difference between working in your business vs. working on your business What happens if we don't make a change—potential risks and long-term consequences Resources & Links: To learn more about how I can help you achieve financial clarity and confidence through essential tools and systems, check out my free training here! Ep 56E56 | What You're Not Changing, You're Choosing
Episode Summary In this episode, I dive deep into idea of "what you're not changing, you're choosing" and how this statement can challenge us to reflect on our current situations, acknowledge our struggles, and determine whether we will remain stagnant or take action to change. Key takeaways from this week's episode: Recognizing Uncontrollable vs. Controllable Factors: While external challenges may be inevitable, our responses to them shape our outcomes. The Pain of Staying the Same vs. The Pain of Change: True growth happens when the discomfort of the current situation outweighs the fear of change. Daily Decisions Matter: Change isn't a one-time event but a continuous choice we must make daily. Learning from the Past: If we fail to learn from our past mistakes, we are choosing to repeat them—potentially passing those struggles on to future generations. Farm Succession and Generational Planning: Decisions made today impact the future sustainability of agricultural operations. Splitting assets evenly may not always set the next generation up for success. Taking Ownership: Whether in business, family, or personal growth, owning our choices leads to growth and resilience. Change is never easy, but staying stuck can be even harder in the long run. The choice is always yours. Will you remain where you are, or will you take action to create a better future for yourself, your family, and your business? Ep 54E54 | Beyond the Premium: Smart Crop Insurance Decisions with Landon Shafer
Episode Summary Welcome back to this week's episode of Pioneer Mindset where I sit down with insurance agent, Landon Shafer and we dive into different strategic options to protect your operation! Navigating crop insurance decisions requires a strategic and informed approach to protect both revenue and yield. With tight margins and an ever-changing market landscape, farmers must move beyond making the same choices year after year and instead focus on making intentional, data-driven decisions. Understanding break-even projections, revenue guarantees, and available coverage options is crucial to mitigating financial risks.Additionally, broader insurance options for livestock and forage present opportunities for farmers to safeguard their entire operation.Check out this week's episode for more! Key points from this week's crop insurance conversation with Landon Shafer: Break-even Analysis: Knowing break-even yields and costs is critical for making informed coverage decisions. Strategic Decision-Making: Crop insurance should be a business decision, not an emotional or habitual one. Hail and Wind Coverage: Rising costs require producers to reassess deductibles and coverage levels to balance affordability with protection. Livestock Insurance: High prices make revenue protection policies like LRP and LGM valuable tools for managing risk. Customizing Coverage: Farmers should assess their unique risk tolerance and adjust policies accordingly, rather than opting for a one-size-fits-all approach. Value vs. Premium Costs: The focus should be on maximizing coverage value rather than just minimizing premiums. Annual Reassessment: Because conditions change yearly, reviewing and adjusting coverage options is essential for optimizing risk management. Ep 53E53 | What Happens If You Can't Work? How To Prepare Your Operation For The Unexpected
Episode Summary Planning for the unexpected is crucial for farmers and ranchers, whether operating solo or within a family business. Without a clear plan, a sudden accident, disability, or death can turn a once-thriving operation into a burden for loved ones. To prevent chaos, it's essential to document daily processes, financial details, and contingency plans to ensure smooth continuity. Proactively addressing these concerns may be uncomfortable, but it is far better than leaving loved ones to navigate a crisis unprepared.Tune into this week's episode for actionable tips on how to set your business up to continue when the unexpected happens. Key takeaways from this week's episode on how to prepare for the unexpected: Decentralized Operations – Even in a one-person business, someone else should be familiar with daily tasks. Record-Keeping – Maintain detailed records of assets, debts, contracts, and operational processes. Financial Planning – Assess life insurance coverage, disability insurance, and savings to ensure financial security. Income Stability – Evaluate how many months of expenses are covered by savings in case of injury or inability to work. Family Considerations – If the primary provider is lost, ensure plans are in place for the family's financial stability. Ep 52E52 | Are You Missing The Right Skills To Be Successful In Your Operation?
Episode Summary In this episode, I dive deep into the importance of learning the right skills necessary for success. Do you ever feel like you lack the right skills or that you're just not meant to succeed in a particular area? Whether in business or personal life, skills are something that can be taught and learned. I explore how identifying and developing the right skills can be the difference between failure and success. In this week's episode I share some takeaways on skills for success: Skills vs. Talent: While talent and instinct can give some an advantage, success ultimately comes down to acquiring the right skills. Defining Success: Understanding what success means to you is crucial to setting meaningful goals. Evaluating Your Skills: Ask yourself if you have the right skills to succeed. If not, what steps are you taking to develop them? Breaking the Cycle: The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results. Learning new skills is key to breaking ineffective habits. Generational Learning: While past generations provide valuable lessons, adapting to modern challenges requires new skills and perspectives. Taking Action: Success comes from actively seeking and learning the skills that will drive you forward. Rather than blaming external factors like the economy, weather or competitors, take control by acquiring the right skills. Challenges are inevitable, but with the right mindset and tools, they can be overcome. Learning the right skills will not only help in business but also in personal relationships, and overall life balance. Ep 51E51 | How To Strengthen Your Borrowing Power With The 5 C's of Credit
Episode Summary This week I dive into the Five C's of Credit that help strengthen your borrowing power and maintain a good relationship with lenders. By managing these effectively, you can position yourself as a reliable borrower, reduce stress, and secure financing for your business goals. These are the key takeaways from this week's episode on the 5 C's of Credit: Capital: Maintain high capital reserves to protect your borrowing power and show banks you are managing their investment responsibly. Strong capital gives you leverage over lenders and enhances trust in your financial stability. Collateral: Keep collateral evaluations current and accurate, especially as market values for assets (e.g., equipment or land) fluctuate. Understand loan-to-value (LTV) ratios (e.g., 70–80% for most assets) to anticipate how much you can borrow. Avoid overestimating asset values; banks prioritize conservative assessments. Conditions: Communicate the purpose of the loan clearly (e.g., funding business growth versus personal expenses). Monitor economic conditions and industry trends to align financing requests with realistic expectations. Track financial performance (e.g., profitability and cash flow) to demonstrate your business's viability. Ep 50E50 | Building a Future Without Uncertainty: Farm Succession Strategies
Episode Summary Farm transition is a complex process that involves more than just passing down land; it requires careful planning of assets, management, and financial strategies. Many farmers rely on their land as a retirement asset, but without proper planning, this approach can create challenges for the next generation. Open communication and proactive planning are key to ensuring a smooth transition while balancing financial security and legacy goals. In this week's episode I share some key points when thinking about farm transition: Start Planning Early: Don't wait—initiate discussions and create a flexible transition plan that can be adjusted over time. Diversify Retirement Income: Relying solely on farm land for retirement can burden the next generation; explore options like life insurance or lease-to-own agreements. Understand Perspectives: Both generations should consider each other's challenges—older farmers' sacrifices and younger farmers' uncertainties. Avoid "Maybe" Plans: Don't build your future on uncertain promises; ensure clear expectations and commitments are established. Communication is Essential: Regular, honest conversations help set expectations, prevent misunderstandings, and align goals for the future of the farm. Ep 49E49 | Lessons Learned from Grandpa: Shifting My Mindset Around Hard Work
Episode Summary In this week's episode, I talk about finding the balance between a strong work ethic and effective time management. My grandpa used to always say "I'd rather wear out than rust out" and I dive into how some of the lessons passed down through generations, shape our mindsets around the values of hard work. A few key points from this week's episode: Work Ethic in Perspective: A strong work ethic can lead to productivity and success, but it can also result in burnout or neglect of family and personal priorities. Evaluating Time Investment: It's essential to assess the return on time for each task. Are you investing your hours into activities that align with your long-term goals? Working In vs. On Your Business: Use slower seasons to work on your business—strategizing, planning, and improving operations—rather than simply filling time with low-value tasks. Opportunity Cost Matters: Time is a finite resource. Consider whether the time spent on certain tasks could be better used elsewhere. Short-Term vs. Long-Term Goals Short-Term Goals: Avoid being overly ambitious to prevent burnout. Focus on small, realistic wins to build momentum. Long-Term Goals: Be more ambitious. Success with short-term wins adds up over time, making ambitious long-term goals achievable. Best Practices for Goal Setting Align all goals with a clear long-term vision. Be realistic to avoid discouragement. Frequently review and adjust goals to remain relevant and reflective of progress. Accountability Seek accountability from friends, mentors, or groups. Ep 45E45 | How to Thrive in Uncertain Markets: Looking Ahead to 2025
Episode Summary This week I dive into the conversation of booking crop inputs for 2025.With 2024's crop behind us and the end of the year coming up quickly, booking inputs for the next year's crop is at the forefront of many conversations. So let's dive into some of the practical points around these end of the year conversations. In this week's episode I share some key points around booking inputs for the 2025 crop: Realistic Yield Projections: Use conservative estimates to avoid overestimating profitability. Calculate a breakeven point either per acre or per bushel. Profit Considerations: Define profit clearly—it could range from covering family living expenses to increasing equity through term debt repayment. In tough years, breaking even while covering all essential expenses can still be considered progress. Cost Management: Identify and focus on essential inputs (e.g., seeds, fertilizers). Evaluate the necessity of additional costs and seek alternatives to reduce them. Revenue Improvement: Enhance pricing through risk management and marketing advisors who can remove emotional biases and secure better prices, even with incremental gains. Explore different markets or crops, such as organic, alfalfa, or small grains, to become a price maker rather than a price taker. Decision-Making Responsibility: Avoid defaulting to input decisions based on trends, sales pitches, or peer influence. Be deliberate and responsible, as these decisions directly affect the sustainability of the business. Tools and Assistance: Utilize tools for breakeven analysis tailored to your operation's needs. Seek advice or tools from experienced sources to make informed decisions. Ep 42E42 | Stop the Scramble: Make Tax Planning Work for Your Business
Episode Summary In this episode, I dive into a topic that's often overlooked but critical for every farmer and business owner: tax planning. While it might not be the most exciting part of running a business, staying on top of your finances and preparing for taxes can make or break your operation's long-term success. Here are a few key takeaways from this week's episode: 1. Reactive vs. Proactive Tax Planning: End-of-year tax scrambling isn't true planning—it's damage control. Proactive tax planning starts with staying organized throughout the year and projecting future income and expenses. 2. Organization is Key: Trying to organize a year's worth of financial records in December leads to stress and poor decisions. If you're already behind this year, use the time to prepare for next year. Start fresh with systems in place on January 1st. 3. Focus on Actuals and Projections: Accountants focus on actuals—what has already happened. A proactive plan includes projections—predicting future income and expenses to make better decisions ahead of time. 4. Avoiding Bad Decisions: Don't make unnecessary purchases or take rash actions just to reduce taxes. Paying taxes isn't the enemy; it's often a sign of profitability. 5. Implementing the Right Tools: Using tools like Farmer Metrics or other accounting systems can help streamline your financial tracking and decision-making. Resources & Links: Ready to level up your tax planning? Get ahead of the game by staying organized and proactive. Ep 41E41 | Shiny Object Syndrome: The Balancing Act of Solving Problems vs. Chasing Opportunities
Episode Summary In this episode, I talk about time management and how to prioritize effectively within your business. Using the concept of ROT (Return on Time), I break down the importance of distinguishing between problems and opportunities, focusing on how to solve pressing issues first to create a sustainable and efficient business. In this week's episode I share some of my thoughts on time management: Understanding Problems vs. Opportunities: Problems threaten your business's future, such as cash flow, labor shortages, or organizational challenges. Opportunities are untapped avenues to expand or grow, like acquiring more land, equipment, or diversifying revenue streams. The Risks of Focusing Solely on Opportunities: Opportunities are exciting and fun but can lead to bigger problems if not balanced with addressing current challenges. Growing without resolving core issues can amplify inefficiencies and strain resources. Prioritizing for Long-Term Success: Solve smaller problems first to avoid them snowballing into bigger ones. Addressing problems improves your business's foundation, allowing you to pursue opportunities more effectively. Balancing Problems and Opportunities: Dedicate the majority of your time (e.g., 90%) to solving problems and a smaller portion (10%) to exploring opportunities. Avoid the pitfalls of "shiny object syndrome" by letting ideas sit and revisiting them later with a clearer perspective. Practical Tips for Managing Your To-Do List: Distinguish items on your to-do list as either problems or opportunities. Develop systems and processes to create a decentralized operation, freeing up time to work on the business rather than in it. Ep 38E38 | Humble Confidence: Balancing Ego & Humility in Farming & Business
Episode Summary In this episode, I discuss the topic of ego. Building on some thoughts from a previous episode I did on ego, I dive more into what ego is, how it influences our decisions, and the importance of balancing confidence with humility, especially during times of success. Whether you're a farmer reflecting on the season's yields or anyone facing life's ups and downs, this episode shares my insights on how to stay grounded through both achievement and challenges. In this week's episode I share some of my thoughts on ego in farming and business: Learning from Harvest Success: As the season winds down, I reflect on how ego can make us feel solely responsible for our achievements, while it's often a mix of hard work, timing, and a bit of luck. The "High Horse" Effect: "The higher the horse, the harder the fall." Success can make us feel invincible, but staying grounded is essential to avoid harsh reality checks. Listening to the Whisper of Humility: Ego tends to scream, while humility—or the "whisper" of wisdom—takes patience and awareness to hear. The Dichotomy of Confidence and Humility: Inspired by "The Dichotomy of Leadership," I discuss finding a balance between ego-driven motivation and humility. This balance, termed "humble confidence," is key to navigating life's challenges. Ep 37E37 | Navigating Farm Financing: Pros, Cons, and Lessons Learned
Episode Summary This week on Pioneer Mindset, I dive into financing options for purchasing inputs. Whether you're booking chemicals, crop protection products, or considering equipment financing through options like John Deere Financial or Rabobank, this episode goes into different options farmers should consider when it comes to financing options. I share some of my own personal experiences with different financing options and how they can affect things like managing cash flow, the impact on balance sheets, and avoiding disorganization. In this week's episode I share some of my own key financing takeaways: Types of Financing: John Deere Financial, Rabobank, and others for securing inputs like chemicals and crop protection. Pros of Financing: Potential savings on interest (e.g., saving $5,800 for a $70,000 investment), freeing up operating funds, and being able to allocate cash flow elsewhere in the operation. Cons of Financing: Confusion and difficulty managing finances, the risk of creating bad spending habits, and the potential for disorganization to cost more than the savings. Managing Accounts: The challenges of tracking liabilities, interest rates, and cash flow when using various financing options, including credit cards. Staying Organized: The importance of organization in avoiding financial pitfalls and maintaining clear, confident decision-making in farm management. Ep 36E36 | Watch Your Own Bobber: The Dangers of Harvest Comparison
Episode Summary As we are in the thick of harvest, this week I talk about comparison. During harvest as everyone is out in the field, it's easy to compare yourself to other farmers and operations. When you see someone else's new piece of equipment or hear about bin busting yields in the field next to yours, it's easy to let those comparison thoughts hit hard. In this episode, I dive into how important it is to stay focused on your own progress and accomplishments. In this week's episode I share some of thoughts on harvest comparison: Watch Your Own Bobber: Keep your focus on your own goals and progress, rather than getting distracted by what others are doing. Comparing to Others Doesn't Help: Whether it's equipment or yields, comparing yourself to others often leads to discouragement and serves no productive purpose. Compare Current Self to Old Self: Comparing current self to your old self, you can actually measure how far you've come rather than where someone else is. Recognizing your own growth is what truly matters. Yields and Success Can Be Deceiving: High yields or visible success don't always tell the full story. Focus on profit per acre and other metrics within your own operation matters more in the long run. Everyone Has Their Own Struggles: Even the farmers who seem to "have it all" face unseen challenges. Striving to have what someone else has might mean sacrificing things you value. Do Your Best: At the end of the day, the most important thing is to do the best you can with the resources you have. Let go of comparisons and trust that your hard work will pay off in its own way. Resources & Links: Check out my free training inside Pioneer Farmer, click here! Ep 29E29 | Learning From Missed Opportunities to Step Out of Our Comfort Zone for Future Success
EEpisode Summary This week I explore the concept of missed opportunities and how decisions made in the past shape our present and future by learning from them.I talk about the importance of recognizing potential opportunities, even when they are disguised as challenges or obstacles. Many in farming and family businesses, often go back to the security of familiar paths rather than exploring new ventures that may offer growth and success. This episode is about encouraging you to be willing to explore new ideas, step into uncomfortable situations, and pursue opportunities with purpose and conviction.
