Teach Kindergarten to Grade 2? Read and Spell Words Using this Strategy! What is a word chain? A ‘word chain’ is a ‘chain’ of words linked together. In a chain each link is separate, but connected or linked together. A word chain is a chain of words that are similar, but one sound or phoneme in each word has changed from the previous word. For example, in the very short word chain ‘rip, sip, sap, sat, your child has substituted the beginning sounds of two rhyming words, ‘rip’ and ‘sip’, changed the medial or middle vowel sound, when changing ‘sip’ to ‘sap’ and substituted ‘p’ for ‘t’ when going from ‘sap’ to ‘sat’. Reading God’s Word, the Bible, keeps me grounded and fills my heart with the peace. As a beginning teacher, I taught kids to read using the wrong approach. Tired of teaching kids to guess what words they were reading by having them look at the beginning letter of a word and the accompanying picture left me feeling defeated as a teacher. My students still struggled to read simple leveled books. I finally realized that if I was going to teach kids to be confident readers, we had to go back to using a phonics-based approach to reading instruction, which allowed students to build confidence as readers, phonics skill by phonics skill. I discovered a sequential, step-by-step phonics-based approach to teaching kids to read. Phonics skills are modeled, practiced and applied using simple phonics strategies. Kids learn to read simple to more complex texts by applying phonics skills in a progressive, organized manner. An approach to teaching kids to read that I will forever use with beginning readers.
