Ep 1046BSH Radio Special: The 2022 Festivus Airing of the Grievances!
We couldn't, in good conscious, let this year's Festivus pass without letting our wonderful listeners air a few grievances, so Steve and Kelly turned on the mics and let some folks get it out of their system. Ep 1045Checking out the competition: Another Metro team, another sick Russian goalie
The Flyers are down in Carolina for their second meeting with the Carolina Hurricanes, a team that was good the first time we saw them and have, somehow, gotten even better. Ep 1044Flyperbole Ep. 295: Where there's smoke, there's Flyer
Steve and Quigz are here to get you through your remaining holiday shopping with a whole bunch of tangy somewhat Philadelphia Flyers related 'tent. Cam Atkinson will not play hockey this season, Kevin Hayes buyout rumors intensify, the mystery of Gritty's home brew, Limp Bizkit's offer to Elon Musk, and the 2022 Christmas movie challenge are all on the table for a podcast recorded on the shortest day of the year. Ep 1043Checking out the competition: You have to Leaf this afternoon
The Flyers will take the ice against the Toronto Maple Leafs at 2pm on Thursday; an odd time, to be sure, but kind of a fun one too, no? The recently red-hot Leafs have cooled off of late, winning only one of their last three. Overall they're 5-3 in the month of December and easily one of the top teams in the league, so the Flyers will really have to bring it. Ep 1042BSH Radio #384: These are the Hayes of our lives
Last week the gang lamented that there wasn't much left to say about the Philadelphia Flyers this season. They just suck. This week, the team decided to remedy this problem altogether. From scratching Kevin Hayes to Chuck laughing at a press conference, the gang goes through all of this week's happenings before getting into the NHL's latest dumb idea. Ep 1041Checking out the competition: Bringing the party home
The Flyers are back at home tonight to face the New York Rangers, who will be coming into The Farg riding a five game winning streak. The Rangers have had a lot of up and down since the Flyers last played them back on November first, but things have been firmly trending in the "up" direction over the last couple of weeks so this won't be an easy one for the Flyers. Ep 1040BSH Interviews: Executive Director of Flyers Charities Cindy Stutman
The Flyers are putting a lot of effort toward building a community of charitable giving this year -- from animal welfare fundraisers to bringing hockey to underprivileged kids in the city to hanging out with the boys at the casino. Flyers Charities has two marquee events coming up soon and Cindy Stutman, Executive Director of Flyers Charities, hopped on the show to tell us all about them. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 1038BSH Radio #383: You just can't fix suck
The Flyers continue to be bad. John Tortorella keeps trying to make them better. And he's doing it, for the most part. It's just that better is still bad. The gang rolls through the last week of Flyers' action, along with Morgan Frost's latest attempt to be a good hockey player and Cam York's return to the NHL. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 1037Checking out the competition: Time for the Arizona Experience
After losing their first Western Conference road trip game to the Vegas Golden Knights in overtime, the Flyers will head to Arizona State University for their first meeting with the Coyotes. The Coyotes are not good. The Flyers are not THAT much better. Could be a real barn burner! Carl Pavlock of Five For Howling hopped on the mic to give us a look at the 'Yotes' season thus far. Ep 1036Checking out the competition: Who is feeling lucky?
The Flyers have made their way out to Vegas for the first time this season, coming off of a loss to the Washington Capitals. The Golden Knights are hanging out in first place out West and are having a heck of a season so far, so to say it's going to be tough for the Flyers is probably an understatement. Ep 1035BSH Radio #382: It's Chuck's reality and we're all just suffering through it
The Flyers have finally figured out how to win some hockey games, and with some of their injured players returning to the lineup the question needs to be asked: are the Flyers headed toward Maximum Sadness? The gang dives into that question as well as looking back on the Chuck Fletcher/John Tortorella press conference that took place last week, and then taking a deep-dive into the Flyers' defense. Ep 1034Checking out the competition: Bring on the champions
The Colorado Avalanche, your reigning Stanley Cup Champions, are in town tonight, their first time at the Wells Fargo Center since the banner went up. The Avs are battling just as many injuries to key players as the Flyers, and while they're still leagues better than our boys, it may just give them a fighting chance. Ep 1033Checking out the competition: The Devils come down to Philly, again
It's been a couple of months since the Flyers opened up their season with a 5-3 win over the New Jersey Devils, and a lot has changed since then -- for both clubs. The Flyers went on to complete their third ten game losing streak in less than two years. The Devils went on a franchise-record 13-game winning streak. The trajectories were different, to say the least. John Fischer of All About The Jersey came back to revisit his pregame predictions from last time and to get into what is making the Devils click. Ep 1032BSH Postgame 12/1: L, 4-1 vs. Lightning
What is there to say? The Flyers have very few good players, the Lightning have a lot of them. When Tampa wanted to take over, they did, basically winning the game in the second period. Ep 1031Flyperbole Ep. 292: A.I. Artificial Idiot
This podcast is up and down, like a toilet seat. This podcast was mocked by Jack Edwards for eating too many meals in a given day. This podcast spent a shocking amount of time trying to get an A.I. to generate an image of Meat Read. This podcast also spoke shockingly little time discussing a 10 game Philadelphia Flyers losing streak, because the handsome and wonderful hosts have become so desensitized to double digit losing streaks from the orange and black. This was recorded before the Flyers-Lightning game, but SHOCKINGLY, the Flyers lost that one, so big whoop. Follow us on Twitter: @Flyperbole @ryanquigz Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 1030Checking out the competition: Let's see if lightning can strike twice
It's the second meeting of the Flyers and Lightning this season, and if you'll recall, the Flyers won the first one back in October. After finding their way out of their latest ten game losing streak, can the Flyers do it again? As in, win a second game? And a second game against the Lightning?? It's a tall ask, but they're gonna try. Justin Godfrey from Raw Charge is back again to let us know what's been going on with the Bolts over the last six weeks. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 1029BSH Radio #381: Pushing all the buttons
The Flyers have finally won a game ahead of a tough stretch against some of the top teams in the NHL, so where do things go from here? Ep 1028BSH Postgame: W, 3-1 vs. Islanders
The 10-game losing streak is over and I think we can all agree that the Philadelphia Flyers finally won a game for one reason: Zack MacEwen and Nicolas Deslauriers each got in a fight, with Matt Martin and Ross Johnston, respectively, within the game's first eight seconds. Such physical determination and sacrifice propelled the Flyers to their first win since November 8, a 5-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues. The Orange and Black wrapped up their November schedule with a win on Tuesday night to put a bow on a month in which they went 3-8-4 and saw their overall record fall to 8-10-5, good enough for second-to-last in the Metropolitan division, fourth-from-the-bottom in the Eastern Conference, and a .457 points-percentage, well within the league's bottom-10. It's been a great month for the pro-tank portion of the fanbase, but Carter Hart's performance (stopped 23/24 for a .958 save-percentage on Tuesday) against the Islanders was more akin to the early-season Hart, when he went 6-0-2 in his first eight starts, posting a .946 save-percentage over that span. Is Hart about to get hot again? Could this team start reverting back to mediocre rather than a cellar-dweller? Honestly, who the hell knows? Listen to the postgame! Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 1027Checking out the competition: Same players, different team
Another first game against a Metro team this week, as the Flyers head up to Long Island to say hello to our old friends the New York Islanders. The faces on this team are the same ones we've been seeing for years, but in the post-Trotz era this seems like a whole new team. Ep 1026Checking out the competition: Someday this team will not be good
Everyone enjoy their turkey? We've got a 5:30pm Black Friday showdown against the Pittsburgh Penguins; the first meeting of these two teams this year. It's Thanksgiving Eve here in America, but that's not going to stop the gang from talking about the Flyers. Our favorite hockey team. For which we are all thankful? Anyway, the gang gets into the injury updates from the team, the Kevin Hayes Situation, and the bright spots to be found in what is starting to look like another dark season. Ep 1024Checking out the competition: The All-Injury Classic
Somehow we've made it all the way to the end of November before playing the Washington Capitals, and here we are. Ep 1022Checking out the competition: Light 'em up
The Flyers are back in Philadelphia tonight for their first meeting with the Calgary Flames. The Flyers will be looking to stop the bleeding by finding a way to beat the Flames, who have won 3 of their last 10 games. Ep 1021BSH Postgame: L, 4-1 @ Bruins
The Philadelphia Flyers lost to the Boston Bruins on Thursday night, 4-1, in a game that looked a lot more like what we expected from this team before the season began. The Flyers have now lost five straight (4 in regulation, 1 on overtime), and have come up without a victory in seven of nine game to start November, after a 5-2-1 start in October. Carter Hart has just been ok, rather than other-worldly, and that has been the biggest difference, but the offense has also dried up. After averaging 3 goals/game in the season's first month, they're down a full goal this month, averaging only two tallies per game, and scoring more than two only twice in the last nine games. Losing is ultimately good for the long-term good of this franchise, but that doesn't make watching these games any easier. Philly spent over six minutes on the power play against Boston, and mustered only one shot on goal in those opportunities (and hey, it went in!). Tough times and tough games to watch may be ahead for the orange and black but we must remember, this is for the best. Listen to the postgame. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 1020Checking out the competition: The Bruins somehow got better, and that's annoying
Before this season started you definitely had the Bruins as one of the best teams in the league, right? No. Of course you didn't. But there they sit, nearly a quarter of the way through the season, at the top of the standings. Sky from Stanley Cup of Chowder took us inside what has been propelling the Bruins to the top so far this year. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 1019BSH Radio 300th Episode Live Celebration
Bill Matz, Kelly Hinkle, and Steph Driver (Charlie O'Connor is on the road for the Boston game), host a Spotify Live to celebrate the 300th episode of Broad Street Hockey Radio recorded earlier today (BSH #379). This was a lot of fun, and incredibly self-indulgent, but I think hosts and listeners alike can enjoy a night to reflect on this really great community built around an insanely frustrating hockey team. Ep 1018BSH Radio #379: The sucking isn't the story
It's the 300th episode of BSH Radio and the gang is celebrating! There's a bit of looking back over the last 6 years of the existence of this little podcast about the Flyers before getting into the Flyers. Ep 1017BSH Postgame 11/13: L, 5-1 v. Dallas Stars
Three games makes a streak and the Flyers now own a losing one, as they dropped a kinda weird game against the Dallas Stars at home at The Farg. Weird in the sense that the Flyers didn't really play bad. The Flyers just are bad. They tried really hard, gave the proverbial 110%, they even got a pretty good performance out of backup Felix Sandstrom. They just... aren't as good as the Dallas Stars. We're probably going to see a lot of this, folks, and we chatted about it after the game. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 1015BSH Postgame 11/10: L, 5-2 @ Blue Jackets
In Johnny Gaudreau's first game against the Philadelphia Flyers since Chuck Fletcher committed organizational malpractice and refused to attempt to bring the star forward home, Johnny Hockey showed Philadelphia exactly what they're missing, scoring the game's opening goal and assisiting on two others in a game the Orange and Black lost 5-2 to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Flyers weren't necessarily "bad," minus not having much jump early, they just appeared disjointed, and somewhat lacking in chemistry, and were unable to capitalize on several opportunities to extend the BJ's losing streak, which was halted at five games thanks in large part to Gaudreau. The loss was Carter Hart's first in regulation, and while he may not have been spectacular, all three goals he allowed (CBJ added a pair on empty-netters to pad what became a close game in the third period), were the results of turnovers leading to odd-man situations for Columbus. So, not the best showing for Philly in their first of what will be many encounters with Gaudreau over the next seven years, but they'll get right back at it on Saturday when they host Claude Giroux and the Ottawa Senators, in what will be the former captain's first game in Philadelphia since his 1,000th as a Flyer last season. That's all. Listen to the postgame podcast, please and thank you! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices. John Tortorella will be saying hello to his old team for the first time since his departure as the Flyers meet up with the Blue Jackets in Columbus for their first meeting of the season. It's time to put aside the notion that the Flyers are simply off to a hot start, as the gang gets into whether or not the 7-3-2 Philadelphia Flyers are actually an okay hockey team. They also weigh in on the Rasmus Ristolainen scratch, John Tortorella's affects on the team so far, and what the real high point of this season might be. Ep 1012BSH Postgame 11/09: W, 5-1 vs. Blues
The Philadelphia Flyers beat the St. Louis Blues, 5-1, on Tuesday night at the Wells Fargo Center. The Flyers improved to 7-3-2 on the season, while the Blues dropped their eighth straight in regulation after a 3-0-0 start. Wade Allison, Travis Konecny, and Noah Cates all scored in the second period, to give Philly a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes. Ryan O'Reilly cut the score to 3-1 early in the third, but Lukas Sedlak restored the three-goal lead only 1:22 later, and then Owen Tippett finished the game off with 39 seconds left to ensure Felix Sandstrom (27 saves on 28 shots) notched his first career victory in his ninth career start. All of this lead to the question, "how are we evaluating this team now? What's the curve?" Sure, there are 70 games left, but (American) Thanksgiving is two weeks away, and as of now, the Orange and Black occupy an Eastern Conference playoff spot. How are people reacting to the reality that this probably won't be a bottom-five team in the standings? Listen to the podcast to find out! Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 1011Checking out the competition: Let's call this Blues clues
The St. Louis Blues had a pretty quiet summer and, thus far, a pretty uninteresting season. A few injuries, some underperforming players, and some questions in goal is about all they've got going. Ep 1010Flyperbole Ep. 289: This is not a party
You know it was a bad weekend in Philly sports when the highlight is that a man ate a rotisserie chicken for the 40 straight day. Ep 1008Checking out the competition: How does this affect the Leafs?
If you pay any attention to the Toronto sports media, you might think the Maple Leafs are a disaster beyond remedy, not the .500 hockey team filled with superstars off to a bit of a slow start. Ep 1005BSH Radio #377: A Day Late, But It Still Works
Bill Matz, Steph Driver and Charlie O'Connor discuss all the latest goings-on with the hockey team the Flyers, including Carter Hart's incredible start, Travis Konecny and Kevin Hayes getting benched, winning despite never having the puck, and, after a false finish, claiming Kieffer Bellows on waivers. Ep 1004BSH Postgame 10/27: W, 4-3 vs. Panthers
How are they winning? Why are they winning? Is this sustainable? Where the hell is all of this going? Sometimes we just have to throw up our hands and see how things play out. The Philadelphia Flyers were outshot 51-22 in their 4-3 win over the Florida Panthers on Thursday night. Despite getting off to a 5-2-0 start, Philly has been outshot, on average, by a count of 36-27. But a combination of Carter Hart's dominance, some great execution in few offensive zone chances, and a little bit of luck (maybe more than a little bit) have this team sitting atop the Metropolitan division with 10 points in the standings, trailing only the Boston Bruins (14 points) for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Is this good for the long-term health of the organization? Not if the goal is to ultimately acquire top-end talent, which seems only possible via high lottery picks. But after years of embarrassing losses and unwatchable hockey, it's hard to say watching them win, even in a completely unsustainable way, isn't at least a little fun. And it's definitely adding to the mystique of whatever magic is in the Philadelphia air, with the Union surging towards the Conference Final, an undefeated Eagles team, and the Phillies 4 wins away from a World Series Championship all happening at once. So, just throw up your hands, roll with the punches and listen to postgame. What else can we do? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 1002Checking out the competition: Be the Predator or be the prey
After the first loss of the season the Flyers are heading to Nashville to take on the Predators and see if they can't bounce back from the L. Eamon Smith of both On The Forecheck AND Broad Street Hockey joined us to talk about the state of the Preds, an organization that seems to have more parallels with the Flyers than you might expect. Ep 1001BSH Postgame 10/19: L, 4-3 @ Panthers
The good times were bound to come to an end at a certain point, and it all came crashing down on Wednesday night. The Phillies lost game 2 of the NLCS to the Padres and the Philadelphia Flyers' 3-game winning streak to the season concluded with a 5-4 loss to the Florida Panthers. Felix Sandstrom's first start of 2022-23 was eventful, but ultimately unsuccessful as he allowed 4 goals on 35 shots, and Sergei Bobrovsky earned a win over his former team, despite allowing goals to Nick Seeler, James van Riemsdyk, and Travis Konecny. Konecny's tally in the final seconds was ultimately meaningless (unless you bet the total or the puckline), but he did beat Bob in the first period on a goal that was ultimately negated by an offside challenge. The Flyers looked overmatched for much of the game but were actually somewhat strong in the third period, and showed the tenacity and resilience that has often lacked in the past. Still, a backup goalie and very few really good players aren't a great mix against the defending Presidents Trophy winners, and it showed for large portions of the game, hence Philly's first loss of the season. Ep 1000Checking out the competition: Panthers aren't even real
It was a very big summer for the Florida Panthers with big-name players and coaches moving out, and new big-name players and new coaches moving in. This is a team with a lot of talent but it's also a team with a lot to figure out, and Todd Little of Litter Box Cats was kind enough to break it all down for us. Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 999BSH Postgame 10/18: W, 3-2 @ Lightning
The Philadelphia Flyers are 3-0-0. The Philadelphia Phillies have a 1-0 series lead in the NLCS. The Philadelphia Eagles are 6-0. WTF is going on? Seriously. I don't know how to handle all these... good feelings. Following the Orange and Black's 3-2 win over the 3-peat Eastern Conference Champion Tampa Bay Lightning, and after allowing enough time for everyone to catch the end of the Phillies game, Bill Matz speaks to Flyers fans about the surprisingly hot start, Carter Hart's dominance, Noah Cates' rise to prominence, and more!
