On August 22nd, 1678 in Hartfordshire, a piece would be published in a local newspaper titled “The Mowing Devil.” The drawing consisted of a series of concentric rings of crops. In the middle stood a devil wielding a scythe. The pamphlet then told a strange tale. A farmer refused to pay a worker to mow his oat field, swearing he would rather the devil himself mow it. Some argue this was the very first documentation of what has become one of the most iconic symbols of alien activity.
