Peristyle Podcast - Former USC All-American Taylor Mays on the Trojans 41-14 win over Arizona
USC left no doubt on the field who the better team was after dispatching of the Arizona Wildcats 41-14. The victory did come at a cost, however, with six new injuries to key contributors joining a growing list of banged up Trojan football players. Even our resident expert Coach Harvey Hyde is on the bench this week with a bad cold, so we have former USC All-American safety Taylor Mays pitch hitting in his place. Family Feud: USC hopes to bounce back against Arizona
USC went to Notre Dame and fought like a top-tier team. The Trojans played clean football and battled against a top 10 team. But ultimately, the Trojans couldn't get off the field on a 13-play, nearly-seven-minute Notre Dame drive to give their offense an opportunity to go win the game. USC had controlled the Irish offense in the first quarter and for much of the second half, but when it came to producing a stop in the fourth quarter, a banged up Trojans defense couldn't get a crucial incompletion or tackle short of the sticks in what finished as a 30-27 road loss Keely Eure and Shotgun Spratling return to the USCfootball.com studio with a new episode of the Family Feud Podcast to assess how the Trojans outperformed the Vegas odds, but fell short against their intersectional rival. With it being USC vs. Notre Dame week we felt it was appropriate to bring back a former Trojan football player who played a very prominent roll in this rivalry. In the mid-1990's USC was riding a 13-game winless streak against Notre Dame (12 losses, 1 tie) but the Trojans were finally able to get a W in 1996. Running back Delon Washington scored the game tying touchdown and two-point conversion and USC eventually won the game 27-20 in overtime. Family Feud: USC heads north to take on UW
Just as expected. USC lost its starting quarterback Kedon Slovis on the second play of the game against Utah, had negative rushing yards going into the fourth quarter, was penalized 11 times for 117 yards, lost the turnover battle and yet...still found a way to beat the No. 10 team in the nation, 30-23, to take a step forward in the Pac-12 South standings. Just as everyone expected the game would play out. It was yet another twist on the 2019 season saga that is "As the Trojans Turn..." USC football seems to do a 180-degree turn each week this season. What is thought one week ends up being reversed the next week it seems as the Trojans ride a wave. A week after USC fans were calling for Clay Helton to join Lynn Swann goodbye train following an overtime road loss to BYU, the Trojans bounced back and upset the Pac-12 favorites with their third-string quarterback and an offense that couldn't run the ball. Say what? Who? How? Yep, USC was outgained in pretty much every significant statistical category and found a way to win at home in the Coliseum. Keely Eure and Shotgun Spratling return to the USCfootball.com studio with a new episode of the Family Feud Podcast to assess just how the Trojans were able to get a victory and how seemingly forgotten redshirt junior Matt Fink rose to the occasion, showing no fear after entering for Slovis. Keely and Shotgun are looking to feature your question on an upcoming episode. Family Feud: USC faces its first road test in BYU
Keely Eure and Shotgun Spratling return to the USCfootball.com studio with a new episode of the Family Feud Podcast to discuss how the Trojans responded to losing their starting quarterback in a big way with a 45-20 win over Stanford, showing some mental fortitude that we weren't sure if they had. In this week's Stock Up/Stock Down segment, Keely and Shotgun have plenty of positives to mention, starting with the play of Slovis, who completed 28 of 33 passes for 377 yards and three touchdowns, and the assistance of Daniels helping guide the freshman throughout the week, the night before at the team hotel and also during the game. They also give credit to the offensive line, a pair of receivers and the offensive confidence the Trojans played with. On the defensive side, the USCfootball.com dueling duo note the work of a young cornerback and a veteran defensive lineman that stood out while Shotgun goes outside the box with a different defensive lineman. When it comes to the negatives, Keely and Shotgun try to decipher Devon Williams' decision to enter the transfer portal while Keely looks at slow defensive starts while Shotgun points out one of the issues that has led to those struggles. In 'Heard It On The Sidelines,' the feudsters give you a look behind the scenes at what they could see and hear from their sideline vantage point during the game, including the rapport between Graham Harrell and a freshman wideout, Clay Helton's message to Slovis after his first touchdown pass and the camaraderie/chemistry that the players seem to have amongst their teammates. Keely questions Shotgun about the how Daniels may have fared against Stanford and whether certain backups should be getting more playing time at this point in the 'Agree/Disagree' segment. This episode of the Family Feud Podcast concludes with the questions that you emailed ([email protected]) and tweeted to us, including why some certain receivers may be excelling at the same time others may struggle, how the USC offense may be affecting the Trojans' defense and what the trajectory for the team is over the next four games. Family Feud: The Kedon Slovis Era begins
The college football season is officially underway at USC. And it didn't take long for the Trojans to bring many more questions than answers. USC won its matchup against Fresno State, 31-23, Saturday night in the Coliseum, but lost the war as starting sophomore quarterback JT Daniels saw his season come to an end soon after it began. Daniels got off to a brilliant start and was 25 for 34 for 215 yards passing when he tried to retreat from a Bulldogs blitz and got folded up by the pressure. He tore the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his right knee, ending his night and ultimately his season on the Trojans' final offensive play of the first half. That meant USC had to turn to Kedon Slovis. It ran a very run-centric offense in the second half to take some pressure off of true freshman. Keely Eure and Shotgun Spratling return to the USCfootball.com studio with a new episode of the Family Feud Podcast to discuss how concerned Trojan fans should be about Slovis starting for the first time against Stanford and whether there may be more pressing things that USC has to take care of even before worrying about the success of Slovis. In this week's Stock Up/Stock Down segment, Keely and Shotgun have plenty of takeaways from the first game of the year. They look at the dynamic running back duo of Vavae Malepeai and Stephen Carr -- who combined for 190 yards rushing, more than 50 yards receiving and three touchdowns -- and the big men up front that helped paved the way for the rushing attack, including graduate transfer Drew Richmond. The Drakes are discussed as freshmen Drake London and Drake Jackson both earned starts in their collegiate debuts. The USCfootball.com duo also look at the positives and negatives from the tight end position. Keely frowns upon the message sent by the USC coaching staff when it delivers conflicting information to the media while Shotgun breaks down the issues the Trojans had on defense against edge-rushing plays, including the struggles of talented sophomore linebacker Palaie Gaoteote. After the first game, Keely and Shotgun have some notes from the sidelines of what they were able to observe and hear while covering the game and practices throughout the week, including Juliano Falaniko's attempt to stake claim for the Trojans like a 15th century explorer, the atmosphere in the Coliseum when safety Isaiah Pola-Mao sealed the game with an interception in the end zone and the demeanor of Slovis and Daniels on the sideline in the second half. In the Agree/Disagree portion of the podcast, Keely questions Shotgun about the how Stanford's defense may attack the Trojans with a true freshman behind center and how the USC defense can get better in a week. This episode of the Family Feud Podcast concludes with the questions that you emailed ([email protected]) and tweeted to us, including whether Tyler Vaughns' performance changed Shotgun's perception of the potential of "Stock Neutral," what might not have been revealed yet by offensive coordinator Graham Harrell, the length of Slovis' leash and what can the Trojans consider to be a good record for the season with a freshman at quarterback for the second year in a row. Keely and Shotgun are looking to feature your question on an upcoming episode. Family Feud: Taking on bold predictions, Fresno State
The season opener is here. You know what that means? No more break downs, talking heads, scrimmages, offseason practice reports or projections. It's finally time to sees an actual football game played this weekend and the Family Feud dynamic duo of Keely Eure and Shotgun could not be more excited to take it in from the sidelines of the L.A. Coliseum on Saturday night. But Family Feud Podcast makes a one-episode adoption of fellow USCFootball.com writer Chris Trevino, the podcast's first official guest. Chris drops by to share several of his bold predictions for the season in an exclusive world premier. Since it's been two weeks since the last episode of the Feud, the trio had a lot to catch up on, including the new closed practice policy, injuries, the shakeup to the QB depth chart and, of course, the Fresno State Bulldogs. In the return of the Stock Up/Stock Down segment, Keely, Shotgun and Chris take turns praising the quickly-progressing offense with Shotgun focusing on the offensive synchronicity. They also remain high on some early-enrollee freshmen that have already been able to make a quick impression despite only being on campus for a couple of months. While Shotgun also highlights some players that have made positive gains as they return from injury, Keely admits that the new coaching staff members have been better than she anticipated from Harrell's offense to the fiery ways of running backs coach Mike Jinks and the hands-on approach of defensive backs coach Greg Burns. As they discuss the coaching staff, the USCfootball.com duo note that USC's coaches have been actively attacking some of the issues the Trojans consistently had last season. Of course, Keely once again fails to try to incorporate a Stock Neutral as Shotgun shoot it down with cries of Stock Unchanged. In Heard it on the Sidelines, Keely, Shotgun and Chris drop some tidbits from the last two weeks of August practices. What did redshirt freshman kicker Chase McGrath say about his recovery from an ACL tear? Hear what linebacker coach Johnny Nansen and sophomore Palaie Gaoteote had to say about the MIKE and WILL spots. Then in the special Agree/Disagree segment, Keely and Shotgun react to five of Chris' 10 bold predictions for the season. Those predictions feature freshman defensive end Drake Jackson, sophomore Gaoteote and sophomore wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. We are really excited about all the questions that were submitted and are looking to feature your question on an upcoming episode. Send your Stock Up/Stock Down contenders for us to debate, provide us with an Agree/Disagree statement or a question you want us to answer. Family Feud: Takeaways from USC's 2019 Fall Camp
Fall camp is in full swing...and now unofficially over as USC football turns to mock game week and then prepares for its season opener against Fresno State after hosting a Fall Showcase event at the Coliseum on Saturday. The Fall Showcase gave the fans a first look at some of the Coliseum renovations and USC's new Graham Harrell-led Air Raid style of offense. It also gave the media a final look at the Trojans practicing this season as media access for the first time will now be restricted to only the first 20 minutes of Tuesday and Wednesday practices, which basically accounts for the team stretching and one or two individual drills each day. That put extra emphasis on the Fall Showcase, particularly with a four-man quarterback competition still taking place between JT Daniels, Jack Sears, Matt Fink and Kedon Slovis, and the action on the field as the Trojans scrimmaged for 87 minutes. Keely Eure and Shotgun Spratling return for a new episode of the Family Feud Podcast to break down all the action of fall camp and what took place during USC's sneak peak on Saturday. The USCfootball.com dynamic duo return to their in-season format with Stock Up/Stock Down, Heard it on the Sidelines and Agree/Disagree segments before answering all of your listener-submitted questions (of which there were many). During the Stock Up portion, Keely and Shotgun both point out where defensive linemen continue to have success, with freshman Drake Jackson's stock continuing to point toward the sky. But he's not the only freshman defender that has caught the eye of both Keely and Shotgun. Inside linebacker Ralen Goforth continues to get a lot of opportunities during team and scrimmage portions and is making the most of the them making plays seemingly every practice. But not everything is peachy for the cardinal and gold. The Family Feudsters also break down what aspects of USC football are seeing their stock decline, including the Trojans' offensive line that was unable to establish a rushing attack at all during the Fall Showcase. The feudsters conclude with your questions, trying to answer the more than 15 questions you guys submitted, tackling topics such as emulation of Nick Saban, draft eligibility, fall camp adjustments, short yardage situations, starting quarterback dissidents, shutout streaks, balancing evaluations, recruiting attractors and sideline demeanors. Needless to say this episode is overbrimming with debates of a variety of fall camp topics.
