Shotgun Spratling and Kasey Kazliner return on the Dedeaux Download Podcast to break down USC baseball's 3-0 start to the season with a historic Saturday performance. The Trojans threw a combined no-hitter that ended in dramatic fashion as a two-run homer from Andrew Lamb invoked a 10-run mercy rule. Sandwiching the dominant 11-0 display on Saturday were a pair of close victories for USC as it won the season opener 3-1 and then locked up the sweep Sunday with an 8-5 victory over the Pepperdine. In each game, the Trojans got elite starting pitching, allowing just three hits over three starts and 16 innings. USC's defensive coordinator search came to an official close on Friday with the hiring of Gary Patterson, the former TCU head coach. Patterson was seen as the clear leader for the job over the course of the last several days. Patterson went 181-79 as head coach of TCU, and he was the Horned Frogs' defensive coordinator for three years before taking over as head coach. USC blew a 10-point fourth-quarter lead to fall, 30-27, to TCU Tuesday night in the Alamo Bowl, and the USCFootball.com team was there to cover all of the action. In the latest edition of Instant Analysis, Connor Morrissette and Shotgun Spratling give their thoughts on the USC loss and what it means for the future of the program. USC gave up a 35-yard touchdown on a third-and-20 play in overtime to lose. The Trojans were severely undermanned, but still had multiple chances to win before collapsing. Jayden Maiava completed 18-of-30 passes for 280 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. King Miller rushed for 99 yards and a touchdown, and Tanook Hines caught six passes for 163 yards. Both USC's offense and defense had chances to land knockout blows and couldn't. Ryon Sayeri made a 22-yard field goal on USC's first offensive possession of overtime, which put the Trojans ahead 30-27. But then USC's defense couldn't get a stop after pinning back TCU to a third-and-20 play. Horned Frog quarterback Kenny Seals threw a screen pass to Jeremy Payne, and Payne broke multiple tackles along the left sideline en route to scoring the game-winning touchdown. With the regular season over and the Trojans sitting at 9-3, Coach Hyde talks about that being acceptable for now, but he wants to see this team get better to compete with the upper echelon programs in college football. He feels Lincoln Riley has improved as a head coach and he likes that USC is running the ball more now. He wants to see the defense improved, especially the linebackers who need to bring more intensity and physicality to the game. On this latest edition of Tunnel Vision USCFootball.com's Ryan Abraham, Connor Morrissette (aka "Triple-Double") are back in studio recapping USC's 29-10 victory over UCLA, capping a 9-3 season for the Men of Troy and a likely trip to San Antonio for the Alamo Bowl and an opportunity to win 10 games. With star wide receivers Makai Lemon and Ja'Kobi Lane suspended for the first quarter for violating team rules, the offense struggled in the first half and only managed to put one touchdown on the board. Things picked up in the second half for USC, with the offense putting up points and the defense pitching another shutout, dashing UCLA's hopes of an upset bid in the Battle for Los Angeles. The guys breaks down the game, talking about how missing the top-2 receivers set the offense back in the first half and some of the defensive struggles that led to the Bruins taking the lead in a game for the first time in 40 days. After halftime quarterback Jayden Maiava settled in and found his two stars, Lemon for a 32-yard touchdown and Lane on a couple of crucial drive-extending catches. King Miller also ran well, finishing with 124 yards rushing, 42 receiving and two total touchdowns, earning him USC's player of the game. Finishing the regular season 9-3 is better than most expected, but in some ways it still feels like a disappointment with the opportunity to make the College Football Playoffs just a missed field goal at Illinois away. The guys take a look at the season as a whole and discuss why Lincoln Riley said this campaign was an important springboard towards the future success of this Trojan football team.
