Ep 11The Climate Report 7/22/21

For today’s Climate Report on 7/8/21, we focus on the two things on the minds of most local listeners regarding climate change impacts and adaptation: heatwaves and fires.First, a new study on how the most recent heatwave exceeded even the worst-case scenarios of climate modeling, throwing predictions for the future up tin air.Next, a piece by a noted climatologist and hydrologist, who talks about all the people who ask him if they should move due to the climate. Then, another piece by a climate/environmental author about her life being impacted by wildfires.Lastly, we briefly touch on the die-off of perhaps a billon marine animals off the Pacific NW coast due to last week’s unprecedented heatwave. Please listen and share!Comments, questions, feedback: [email protected]For more news between shows and links to news we read on-air, find the Climate Report Facebook page at facebook.com/KVMRClimateReport

Ep 9The Climate Report - 5/27/21

On the May 27th Climate Report we run through the latest blows to fossil fuels and oil multinationals, from major court rulings that are putting pressure on them from the outside, to shareholder rebellions that are squeezing them from the inside. Chevron, Shell, ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, Whitehaven Coal…the handwriting is on the wall and the end of the carbon-heavy fossil fuel age is fast approaching. Then we touch on upcoming alternatives to carbon-heavy travel, specifically in the realm of air transport, as environmentally-friendly hybrid airships – aka blimps – are in the works for taking care of shorter city-to-city trips under 250 miles. Seattle to Vancouver is one of the first routes planned for 2025.Lastly, we spend some time on an important topic: how the climate crisis is impacting mental health, and is a hidden unaccounted-for cost to society, and how taking personal climate action has positive impacts on mental health from the individual to community level. Please listen and share!Comments, questions, feedback: [email protected] more news between shows and links to news we read on-air, find the Climate Report Facebook page at facebook.com/KVMRClimateReport

Ep 8The Climate Report - 5/13/21

For the May 13th Climate Report, we started in Kern County, CA, where 90% of the state’s natural gas, 70% of the state’s oil, and 25% of its renewable energy comes from…and thousands more oil wells are being planned. Next we talk about the expected changes to the US way of life as we address climate change, including eventually having every community served by electric US Mail trucks. After hanging out in CA and the US, we leapt the pond and visited the UK to talk about amazing new legislation that will enhance appliance efficiency and require certain manufacturers to offer spare parts that can extend the life of some appliances by 10 years. From there, we launch into the stratosphere, which new research shows is shrinking due to climate change and CO2 emissions. What could this affect? Satellites, worldwide GPS, and radio communication. To cap it off, we close with a thoughtful opinion piece written by William J. Ripple, climate scientist and author of the World Scientists’ “Warning of Climate Emergency,” regarding needing more than the current political promises. Please listen and share!Comments, questions, feedback: [email protected] more news between shows and links to news we read on-air, find the Climate Report Facebook page at facebook.com/KVMRClimateReport

Ep 7The Climate Report - 4/22/21

For today’s 4-22-21 “Earth Day” Climate Report, we start with some brief CA wildfire news and segue into a new global media effort called Covering Climate Now, which is the name being given to a new broad affiliation among 400 newsrooms around the world with access to 2 billion people, in order to address the climate crisis regularly and head-on in their news reporting. Then we wrap up with a big focus on today’s Earth Day 2021 climate summit of world leaders in Washington, DC…from how over 100 Nobel Laureates issued a challenge to world leaders the day before the event started…to what the top politicians on the world stage decided to promise the public this year…to talking about the story of 18yo Jerome Foster, the US’ version of Greta Thunberg: from sitting outside the White House protesting, to sitting inside the White House crafting policy.”Please listen and share!Comments, questions, feedback: [email protected] more news between shows and links to news we read on-air, find the Climate Report Facebook page at facebook.com/KVMRClimateReport

Ep 6The Climate Report - 4/8/21

For today’s 4-8-21 Climate Report, we went deep on a couple of topics:First, we cover the challenges that the health care industry faces during the time of Covid, and how that has impacted their efforts to be more sustainable, when we know that single-use plastics dominate hospital settings in order to maintain sterile environments. Good change is still happening.Next we delve into a sobering new study that shows marine life is fleeing the equatorial regions of the ocean due to high temperatures, impacting the web of life and fish flows underwater, as well as harming the developing nations of the equatorial region that reply on marine life for food, revenue, and tourism.Last, we cover the latest report that says we set a new global record for concentrations of CO2 in the atmosphere in March 2021…besting the previous record from May 2020. We will likely set a new record later this year. Please listen and share!Comments, questions, feedback: [email protected] more news between shows and links to news we read on-air, find the Climate Report Facebook page at facebook.com/KVMRClimateReport

Ep 5The Climate Report - 3/25/21

We start off talking about putting solar over California’s canals and aqueducts, and how solar helped in the Texas power failures.Plus, how the Texas extreme climate shutdown unintentionally limited the amount of fossil fuel cars being produced in the US, which segued into new studies showing how wasteful combustion cars are vs EVs, when it comes to their lifecycle of initial production through to end-of-life recycling.Next we discuss the latest research showing we need the equivalent of 2020’s Covid-related reductions in carbon emissions to be repeated for the rest of the decade, or the Paris goals are out of reach, plus how the needed climate action will have an immediate side benefit of making existing lives better by improved diet, exercise, and clean air.Lastly we close with a focus on the role food waste plays in damaging the climate, with new research showing humans waste land, energy, and resources by growing almost a 1/3 of food that is never eaten. And how to combat this, including new apps that connect people with surplus food at homes and businesses with others in the surrounding community who claim it for free or at discounted prices.Check it out and please share the link to help spread the news! For more news between shows and links to news we read on-air, find the Climate Report Facebook page at facebook.com/KVMRClimateReport

Ep 4The Climate Report - 3/11/21

We talked about numerous ways that citizens can support the grid during times of high-demand when blackouts are imminent: through conservation, through solar-plus-batteries sending power to the grid, through EV batteries sending power to the grid, and ways to get paid for doing all that. We also talked about forests and fires, and US utilities being unprepared for climate change, as evidenced by crises in Texas and CA.For more news between shows and links to news we read on-air, find the Climate Report Facebook page at facebook.com/KVMRClimateReport
