Adrian Sutherland: Indigenous Roots Rocker with Heart

Welcome to the Peaks Island Radio podcast, where I talk with islanders and people of interest to the island about arts, culture, current events, and more. In this episode, I speak with Adrian Sutherland, an Indigenous Roots Rocker from Attawapiskat. I discovered Adrian's latest album, Precious Diamonds, on Bandcamp and was immediately captivated by its freshness and depth of feeling. As his website says: "One listen to Adrian Sutherland and you’ll know he’s unlike anyone else...he melds rock, roots, folk and blues, drawing inspiration from his life, the land, and his language and culture. Adrian’s sophomore solo album Precious Diamonds was recorded in Nashville with former GRAMMY winner Colin Linden, and released in 2024. It won Best Americana Album from the 2025 World Entertainment Awards in Los Angeles, is nominated at the 2025 JUNO Awards, and was selected one of the “Top 100 Albums of 2024” by CKUA Radio. It features two songs in Cree, making the first time Adrian is making music in his first language. Lead single Notawe (Father) reached #1 on the internationally recognized Indigenous Music Countdown, and was named one of the “Top 100 Songs of 2023” by CBC Music. Adrian is presently writing a book for Penguin Random House Canada about his extraordinary life in the North. One of the only professional recording artists who lives in a remote fly-in First Nation, he carries authentic and insightful first-hand perspective on many important issues. During this time of reconciliation, Adrian is hopeful for Canadians to walk together in love and respect.Adrian and I cover a lot of ground in this conversation, touching on his rise in music along with the challenges he faced, what it is like to live on his ancestral lands while also having a recording career, and the many social issues Adrian is passionate about. Hanneke Cassel Long Winter's Night Concert

In this episode, I speak with Hanneke Cassel who is returning to Peaks Island for the Long Winter's Night Concert Series with Keith Murphy. Hanneke talks about what you can expect to hear at the concert, how she got into fiddle music, and how people looking to add playing an instrument into their lives can get started. With a career spanning over two decades, Hanneke Cassel has helped redefine what it means to be a modern fiddler. A driving force in the ever-changing landscape of acoustic music stylings, the Port Orford, Oregon native has established herself as a prolific composer, producer and fixture of the international music community...Described by the Boston Globe as “exuberant and rhythmic, somehow wild and innocent, [music] delivered with captivating melodic clarity and an irresistible playfulness,” it is Hanneke’s hugely generous presence and personality that round out her magnetism as a performer beyond the strings of her fiddle. Judy Fitch on Nurturing Community through Art

Judy Fitch talks with me about the portrait project she launched this winter with approximately 30 women living on Peaks Island. The goal: Get people together after three years of isolation and masking to celebrate community and connection by partnering with other island women to make portraits of one another and see each other through their eyes. The response exceeded Judy's expectations.  The project was so meaningful, Judy and the group decided to put on a public exhibit of the portraits. The exhibit is March 11, 2023 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm at the New Brackett Church on Peaks Island. All are welcome to observe the artwork and engage with the participants.  Here's Judy: "I’ve said from the beginning is that it’s more about the experience and the process than the outcome. At the end they each get to keep the portrait of themselves. What I love is that no one is hung up on what they will receive at the end.  I think that’s kind of extraordinary in a way. It is common for people to want to get something of equal value/quality etc to what they gave, and that just isn’t possible in this project. There are people who’ve never drawn before mixed with professional artists. I love that these women embraced that from the get-go."  There's a lot more insight and information in the full interview. Enjoy! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/peaksislandradio/support

Southern Maine Author Caitlin Wahrer discusses her debut novel 'The Damage'

If you like crime dramas and you like stories set in Maine, our guest today has written the perfect book for you. It’s called The Damage, and it’s written by Caitlin Wahrer. Caitlin lives in Southern Maine, she’s a former lawyer, an author, and also a friend. The Damage is her first novel and it’s published by Penguin Random House. It’s available at all major booksellers, as well as our local bookshops including Print, which is where I ordered my copy. In this conversation, Caitlin and I talk about the novel itself, stepping away from law practice, and what she had to learn and go through to land a book deal. For more information, check out Caitlin's website here.To attend her virtual book launch, sponsored by Print, click this link. What's at Stake in the Charter Commission Election: A Conversation with Peter McLaughlin of the Peaks Island Council

Portland holds City Charter Commission elections on Tuesday June 8, 2021. Voting takes place in the Community Center from 6:45 am until 8:00 pm. I spoke with Peter McLaughlin of the Peaks Island Council about what the issues are in this seemingly run-of-the-mill process. As it turns out - quite a lot. From whether to strengthen the mayor's role to how city council districts are apportioned and more, the Charter is our City's founding document. If you want to hear from the candidates directly, here is the link to the candidate forums hosted by PIC and moderated by Peter: Charter Candidate Forums.
