Lost Futures: The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas w/ Kurt Schiller

In this debut episode of our newest series on science fiction and futurism, the gang is joined by editor at Blood Knife Magazine and host of the Podside Picnic podcast, Kurt Schiller (@mechanicalkurt), for a discussion about Ursula K. Le Guin's rather short but famous 1973 story, The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas. Is it about exploitation under capitalism? Imperialism? That utopia is not possible or cannot exist without sacrifice and suffering, but only for a few? Socialist Feminism: Kollontai On Abortion

In the third and final edition of their Alexandra Kollontai mini-series, ELC presents her 1921 work, "The Labour of Women in the Evolution of the Economy." In addition to elaborating on the Soviet Republic's plans to support women in their dual roles as workers and mothers, she lays out her opinions on abortion, which the Soviet Republic became the first country to legalize in 1920. What can we learn from these essays, as well as from subsequent Soviet history? Is the language of individual rights something we can ever fully avoid when discussing abortion, the state, etc? The ELC crew discusses.

"The Labour of Women in the Evolution of the Economy": https://www.marxists.org/archive/kollonta/1921/evolution.htm

Follow us on Twitter: @ELCpod

Follow us on IG: everybodylovescommunism

Sign up as a supporter at fans.fm/everybodylovescommunism or Patreon.com/everybodylovescommunism to unlock bonus content and join our Discord community!

Like what you heard? Interview with Stephanie Gallardo

In this first episode of interviewing socialist politicians, Jorge interviews Stephanie Gallardo, a Democratic Socialist running for U.S. Congress in Washington's 9th Congressional District. Stephanie is a Seattle native who is a teacher, union leader, and a DSA endorsed candidate for office. Stephanie's campaign is distinct from many running for office because she is running on an explicitly anti-imperialist platform. For her, being an anti-imperialist is personal for the U.S. intervention in Chile led to her family needing to escape the Pinochet regime. Furthermore, she is pro-Palestinian sovereignty and is as an abolitionist. 3.13 - The State and Revolution, Chapter 6 and Post Script

In this exciting conclusion to our series on State and Revolution, the ELC crew engages with Chapter 6, which is Lenin's summary of different arguments had by his contemporaries. Lenin dissects arguments made by reformist Marxists like Georgi Plekhanov and Karl Kautsky, contemporary anarchist thought, and "left Radicals" like Antonie Pannekoek. He simultaneously attacks those he calls opportunists like Kautsky, while distinguishing his position from those of Anarchists. What is the difference between Marxism and Anarchism? Why did Lenin leave State and Revolution unfinished? Jamie, Jorge, and Aaron discuss.

Chapter 6: https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1917/staterev/ch06.htm

Epilogue: https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1917/staterev/postscpt.htm

Sign up as a "fan" on here or a patron at patreon.com/everybodylovescommunism to unlock bonus content and our Discord community, and to support the show!

3.12 - The State & Revolution, Chapter 5 (part 2)

The ELC crew finishes out Chapter 5 of State and Rev. In this EXCITING and HOTLY DEBATED passage, Lenin lays out his plan for transitioning from capitalism to communism via a transitional phase of "lower stage communism." In this phase, you still have to go to work and earn money but now your boss is the state, albeit a state whose foundational goal is its own death-by-withering. Only once the economic basis for that withering is achieved can we ascend to "higher-stage communism" a.k.a. FULL COMMUNISM, a stateless, classless society that runs "from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs." Is this a good plan? What are the pros and cons? Jamie, Jorge, and Aaron discuss.

Chapter 5: https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1917/staterev/ch05.htm

Sign up as a "fan" on here or a patron at patreon.com/everybodylovescommunism to unlock bonus content and our Discord community, and to support the show!

Ep 3.4 - The State and Revolution, Chapter Two

Jamie and Jorge discuss the second chapter of Lenin's The State and Revolution titled "The Experience of 1848-51." How did Marx and Engels conceive of the State before the February Revolution of 1848? How does the bourgeois State operate? How did their conception of the State change over time? What is the Dictatorship of the Proletariat? Why must it both "wither away" and be used to defend socialist construction? Why is the mere acceptance of class struggle in society not enough, according to Lenin? The crew examines all of these questions and applies them to our contemporary situation.

The State and Revolution, Chapter Two:

https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1917/staterev/ch02.htm

Produced and Edited by Paul (@aufhebenkultur)

Intro: Everybody Hates Chris theme song.

Sign up as a Comrade to support the show!

NOTE: There is a bit of repetition near the beginning. Ep 3.3 - The French Revolution of 1848

Jamie and Jorge recap the events leading up to the French Revolution of 1848 that informed Marx's analysis in works like "The Eighteenth Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte" (1852). Lenin drew heavily from these works in Chapter Two of "The State and Revolution," which the crew will be delving into next week.

Please welcome Paul Channelstrip as the show's producer!

Note: Aaron sadly had to take an indefinite leave of absence from the show, but Jamie and Jorge are keeping it going with his blessing.

Ep 3.1 - The State and Revolution, Chapter One

Jamie and Aaron begin their discussion of Vladimir Lenin’s 1917 book The State and Revolution with “Chapter I: Class Society and the State.” What is the Marxist conception of the state? How does the bourgeois state oppress the working class, and how can the proletariat seize power? And what does it mean for the state to “wither away”? After historical context and summarizing “Chapter I,” the crew interrogates Lenin’s ideas, how they have borne out over time, and apply them to the modern-day United States.

The State and Revolution:

https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1917/staterev/

Editing by Moses Archuleta

Intro/outro: Everybody Hates Chris theme song

Sign up as a Comrade to support the show!

Ep 2.2 - Critique Of The Gotha Program w/ Jasper Bernes

Jamie and Aaron are joined by teacher, writer, and researcher Jasper Bernes (@outsidadgitator) for further discussion of Marx's "Critique of the Gotha Program." What does Marx mean by "lower-stage communism" and how does it track with state socialism? The pitfalls of "equality." Troubleshooting labor vouchers. What kinds of domination pass the test of communism? And how does all this relate to Jasper's specialty, communization theory? (Don't worry, he'll be back for a full-on communization episode!)

"Critique of the Gotha Program":

https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1875/gotha/

Jasper Bernes, "The Test of Communism":

https://cominsitu.wordpress.com/2021/03/12/the-test-of-communism/

Editing by Davey Mammal

Intro/outro: Everybody Hates Chris theme song

Sign up as a Comrade to support the show!

Ep 2.1 - Critique of The Gotha Program by Karl Marx

Jamie and Aaron go over Marx's 1875 essay "Critique of the Gotha Program," in which he gives some spicy takes on the platform proposed by the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Germany (SDAP) and the General German Workers' Association (ADAV) as they prepared to unite into one party at a conference held in the city of Gotha. In it, he warns against the reformism and revisionism injected by the ADAV's late leader Ferdinand LaSalle and clarifies what an uncompromising communist vision looks like. The crew summarizes Marx's critique before discussing its modern day relevance.

"Critique of the Gotha Program":

https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/works/1875/gotha/

Stay tuned for part 2 with guest Jasper Bernes!

Editing by Davey Mammal

Intro/outro: Everybody Hates Chris theme song

Sign up as a Comrade to support the show!
