Steinski - Nothing To Fear - A Rough Mix (part 2) (bootleg CD/MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) Soul T'ing CDSTEINNOTH, 2007-06-22 Info : I sincerily hope you've heard about the man Steinski before, through his famous megamixes with Double Dee ["The Payoff Mix", "Lesson 2 (The James Brown Mix)", "Lesson 3 (The History Of Hiphop)", "Jazz"], through his releases with Mass Media ["The Motorcade Sped On", "We'll Be Right Back", "Let's Play It Cool", "It's Up To You"]. Those were incredible, exceptional and amazing cut'n'paste bombs launched during the 80s and the 90s. If you haven't heard these, it's still high time to educate yourselves. Steinski is indeed one of the pioneers of sample-based breaks mixes that have been flourishing with the advent of file-spreading. I've had the chance to meet him in Paris during his Red Bull Academy course, thanks to Fred Elalouf's Ping Pong agency, and when I contacted him to come and join the Paris DJs party, he got hooked with the concept of 30 mn thematic mixes right away. He offered us to put up one of his past mixes to advertise the new one he'll especially cook for for us in a few months time! We've chosen to re-play the "Nothing To Fear - A Rough Mix" program he had done for Coldcut's legendary Solid Steel Radio show from a few years back. Ivan Tchijevsky - More Latin Than Soviet
Ivan Tchijevsky - More Latin Than Soviet Tracklisting : 01. Alexander Tartakovsky Group - The Birthday (1973) 02. Constantin Orbelyan Orchestra - Ritmical Improvisations (1980) 03. Kamerton Ensemble - Carnival (1970) 08. Allegro Ensemble - Holiday (1984) 09. Kadans - Morning Samba (1986) 10. Barometer - Frost and Sun (1983) Note : In Soviet Union there is only one label - Melody Records... Links : myspace.com/tchizevsky headz.fm Info (english) : Latin-American rhythms have always been fascinating and widely spread across the world. And the Soviet Union was no exception. It's quite possible to say that in the former times, USSR had lowered the iron curtain to let all that cultural information slip through, and it was perceived in the right way. Many records, soundtracks to soviet films were influenced a lot by those Latin-American rhythms. Here you can easily spot the cortege of the carnival samba or afro-cuban flavors, sometimes it's even hard to believe that all of that was recorded in the snowy Moscow, in Caucasus, somewhere near the Baltic sea, and a really old movie with a rhythmical samba of the 70th accidentally played on TV was shot somewhere in Crimea. The uniqueness of the provided material lies in what is called the "globalization of music", when for example we come across a soviet versions of compositions made by Gershwin, Mendes, Deodato, national songs of Latin America, which were originally recovered and recomposed by people living on the other side of the continent. For example by Russians, Jews, Georgians, Armenians, Uzbeks, Latvians and Estonians the nations which are quite unfamiliar with Latin-American culture. Isn't that really a multinational thing? Without a doubt, we must refer this fact to a positive process of the dialogue civilisations and look at this cultural layer as a heritage of an ex, in former times - unified soviet culture. And besides, it is not supposed to consider those processes from a viewpoint of some kind of special, integrant power of the Soviet Union, or as a mighty, not long ago, geopolitical unit or a commonly revolutional opinion in Latin America and USSR. Everything is pretty simple. For example, a lot of the presented artists in the podcast are just really good friends of my family and close relatives, who, as us, used to meet with each other and play or listen to good music. Links : myspace.com/tchizevsky headz.fm Info (english) : After more than one year of trying to upper the standards of rare groove podcasting, we decided to open our programs to more musical experts than just our crew of Parisian crate-diggers. Our first guest comes from Russia, with love of course but also a selection of impossible-to-find Soviet Russia grooves. Here's the first half hour, with a 'Part 2' coming up quite soon, and a little introduction specially written by our host of the week, Ivan Tchizhevsky: 'Welcome to Ivan Tchizhevsky podcast! This mix was recorded in Moscow (Russia) and it is a compilation of old records released in the Soviet Union during the 1970s. It is hard to underestimate the effort of musicians who produced those records because at that time it was a question of working really hard to release something worth listening. Not only the poorer technology complicated the process, but the Communist party strong ideological control gave musicians a substantial pain in the ass as well. It was a multi-level vigilance by editors on various stages of production which filtered off everything that would not correspond with soviet ideology. Moreover, because of the 'Iron Curtain' musicians in the USSR could not get necessary information about the ultimate tendencies in contemporary music. We can only guess how many excellent records were suppressed by the communist censors. The advanced music styles like jazz and funk were considered being 'vices of the West' and the Party bosses liked ballet more than music. However, this mix represents only a microscopic part of vast amount of great records made in the Soviet Union. These records could be considered as a cultural heritage which yet has to be discovered (or rediscovered) by music-lovers all over the world.' Ivan Tchijevsky

Not only the poorer technology complicated the process, but the Communist party strong ideological control gave musicians a substantial pain in the ass as well. It was a multi-level vigilance by editors on various stages of production which filtered off everything that would not correspond with soviet ideology. Moreover, because of the "Iron Curtain" musicians in the USSR could not get necessary information about the ultimate tendencies in contemporary music. We can only guess how many excellent records were suppressed by the communist censors. The advanced music styles like jazz and funk were considered being "vices of the West" and the Party bosses liked ballet more than music. However, this mix represents only a microscopic part of vast amount of great records made in the Soviet Union. These records could be considered as a cultural heritage which yet has to be discovered (or rediscovered) by music-lovers all over the world." Ivan Tchizhevsky

VISIT WWW.PARISDJS.COM for more exclusive MP3 Downloads!!! Paris DJs Soul Soundsytem - Cee-Lo Is The One (MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C. TIMEC118, 2006-08-20 Info : We've been listening to Cee-Lo Green's music for years now, and after being astonished by his vocal prowesses on recent TV shows (MTV, Jools Holland, etc), we couldn't resist a well-deserved tribute. A member of Atlanta hip hop act Goodie Mob in the second half of the 90s, he's then started successful solo career with many singles, two superb albums in 2002 and 2004, and numerous collaborations and vocal featurings: with Outkast, their Dungeon Family collective, Common, Twista, Trick Daddy, De La Soul, Rhazel, Black-Eyed Peas... The list goes on and on and recently culminated with his Gnarls Barkley combination, with 'Grey Album' guy Danger Mouse, and their worldwide hit-single 'Crazy' (which you must have heard by now if you weren't lost on some stupid island for months for some reason). Cee-Lo started as a rapper, but he's also an incredible funk and soul singer, a producer and a songwriter. Weird and colorful, drenched into p-funk and soul, high-pitched and sometimes toon-ish, his voice is unique. Some would say that's too much talent in just one guy. We say Cee Lo is the one. Tracklisting : 01. Gianfranco and Gianpiero Reverberi - Nel Cimitero Di Tucson (intro) (from 'Preparati La Bara!' original soundtrack, 1968 / RCA) vs Cee-Lo - One For The Road (intro) (from 'Cee-Lo Green And His Perfect Imperfections' album, 2002 / Arista) 02. The Lone Ranger - Dub Salvador - A Grant Phabao Mix
The Lone Ranger - Dub Salvador - A Grant Phabao Mix (MP3 Podcast on ParisDJs.com) T.I.M.E.C. TIMEC078, 2006-04-07 Info : The Lone Ranger is one of Jamaica's most influential early dancehall DJs. He was twice voted No 1 deejay on the island, in 1979 and 1980. He helped pioneer a newly rhythmic, on-the-beat rhyming style that led DJ toasting into the modern age, and punctuated his lyrics with bizarre exclamations and sound effects ("bim" and "ribbit" were his favorites) that made him perhaps the most imaginative stylist of his time. Without Lone Ranger, no Yellowman, no Shabba Ranks, no Sean Paul... Thanks to the incredible production skills of French dubmeister Grant Phabao, who crafted for him a splendid album last year ("Kulchaklash" / to be pronounced "Culture Clash"), The Lone Ranger is now back on the charts, with rub-a-dub partner Carlton Livingston and their cover of Dandy Livingston's hit "(A Message To You) Rudie". This new single is making waves all over the irie globe on a strictly limited edition 12 inch (500 copies only!), issued on T.I.M.E.C./The Pusher in Europe (with both extended and dub remixes), and on an already out-of-print 7 inch, issued on Silver Bullet in Jamaica. This marvelous slice of pure jamaican spice is a winning crowd-pleaser sure to hit the spot every time, we couldn't let it out of this exclusive mix of oldies, rarities and classics, so... enjoy!
