In 1915, an Irish explorer named Ernest Shackleton took his ship The Endurance to Antartica, where it got stuck in pack ice and eventually sank... So began one of the worlds greatest survival stories, and the inspiration for the term "3rd Man Syndrome"- a curious phenomenon where people in great peril believe there is someone with them to guide them to safety!
