Only Three Lads: Top 5 Albums of 2024 (with Tamar Berk)
EWe're brat(s). And, as we do every December, the most brat thing we can do is to step out of the O3L era and count down our favorite albums of the year. 2024 has provided a treasure trove of pop culture highlights - it was a big pop girl year with a new crop of superstars. There were massive albums (in terms of sales, impact, and length) like The Tortured Poets Department, COWBOY CARTER, and Cindy Lee's Diamond Jubilee, but also records that were "short n' sweet" (literally and figuratively). There was the Kendrick v. Drake beef. Everyone had a Brat summer (well, almost everyone). And did we mention Shaboozey?!? Oh, actually, we didn't mention Shaboozey, but we wish we had...because it is kinda fun to say. It's also become O3L tradition to have someone who actually created one of the year's best albums join us for this episode, and this year is certainly no exception. This year, we welcome prolific singer/songwriter/producer Tamar Berk to join us for this discussion. Tamar has played in numerous bands in the Chicago, Portland, and San Diego scenes since the mid-90s, and in September she released her fourth solo album, Good Times for a Change. The new album is another brilliant mix of power pop hooks, '90s-leaning indie rock, and introspective songwriting. Every one of the Tamar's records has made Brett's year end Top 100 Albums list for their respective years...if that ain't a feather in your artistic cap, we don't know what is. But she's also received a rave review in Creem magazine and has made a whole lot of other year end best of lists. We guess that's cool too. Can we get a big ol' "Shaboozey" to that?!? Ep 123See Hear - Heavy Metal
1981.....music and film fans could only guess as to what the coming decade held – both in art and in the real world. If art reflects the real world, then a portmanteau film centred around a force that contains the sum of all evils seemed like a reflection of the environment the film was born into. Welcome to episode 123 of See Hear. In 1981, following on from the magazine it aligned itself with, Canadian animated film Heavy Metal was sent out into the world. Ralph Bakshi may have paved the way for this to be possible – make no mistake, this was no Disney cartoon. The stories here were filled with gore, naked flesh, fantasy and music (only some of it was heavy metal)....in other words, it was exactly what 14 year old teenage boys were clambering to watch. Usually, See Hear focuses on films that are ABOUT music or musical culture. Despite its name, Heavy Metal isn't such a film, but Kerry, Tim, our friend Paul and myself discuss why we think it is a See Hear film nevertheless. Our conversation incorporates film noir, Looney Tunes, 2001: A Space Odyssey, how a ball of green goo can influence mankind to evil, and....of course....the soundtrack....and a lot more. Not many other films feature the music of Black Sabbath, Devo, Stevie Nicks and Prendecki. Huge thanks to Paul for joining us and for his great insight and historical knowledge. Ugly American Werewolf in London: Vision Quest Soundtrack
EVision Quest was released in theaters February 15, 1985. Based on a book that was hot in the young adult space, it featured a young Matthew Modine as Loudon Swain - a high school wrestler from Spokane, Washington who is looking to accomplish something big in his life. While the movie had limited appeal beyond teenagers (it only grossed $13 million), cable TV and video rental stores gave the movie continued life among teenagers for many years. A big reason it continued to draw 80s teens and carry such strong nostalgia today is the soundtrack. Put together by John Kalodner for Geffen Records, it featured some of the hottest pop and rock artists of the day and sold over 1 million copies in the US. Madonna, who was hot off her Like A Virgin Tour, contributes two songs - the unreleased as a single in the US Gambler and mega hit Crazy For You - and she had a cameo in the film singing them both. Journey offered Only The Young from the Frontiers sessions and the video, like Crazy For You, featured scenes from the film, helping the singles sell big numbers. Those two songs along with Red Rider's Lunatic Fringe set the tone for the film and make the songs and movie so intertwined. Some songs from bands like The Style Council, Don Henley and Dio might be overlooked as background music to certain scenes, songs like Change by John Waite (written by the legend Holly Knight) and Lunatic Fringe really keep you energized and engaged in Loudon's quest to drop 22 pounds and beat the unbeatable Shute on the wrestling mat. You have the tender Crazy For You for the romantic scenes, Journey for the training scenes and lots of rock and pop royalty. Even great songs by Berlin, Quarterflash and REO Speedwagon were left off the soundtrack but appear in the movie, including some solid work by Tangerine Dream. Maybe we like this film because as two former teenage boys, we could relate to what this guy was going through. But we continue to like the soundtrack because it had killer songs (with a couple of clunkers) that stand the test of time and play a huge role in the film. Vinyl Relics - EPYSODE 21: "Beginning From An End" by Fair Weather
Guest: Andy Fairweather-Low. When you're in a band that has had a string of smash hits, it's not easy to walk away. But that's exactly what Andy Fairweather-Low did when he said goodbye to Amen Corner, who were at the peak of their game scoring a #1 and several other top 10 hits. Andy wanted to move from just singing to playing guitar and he wanted to write more of his own material. So from the end of Amen Corner came the beginning of Fair Weather. They released two albums in the early 70's taking in influences from American Soul combined with the English psych and prog sounds they were surrounded by. Andy of course went on to a very successful career with solo albums and working on a host of amazing projects as a sideman for the stars. And he's still going, still releasing great music. S5 Ep 7My Rock Moment: Topanga Canyon Playlist with Emmeline Summerton of Instagram's Lost Canyons LA
The Canyons have long called to the bohemians and artists of Los Angeles. While Laurel Canyon is renowned for its role as a hub of rock history in the 1960s and '70s, Topanga Canyon has its own rich tapestry of stories. In this episode of My Rock Moment, we welcome Emmeline Summerton from the Instagram account Lost Canyons LA, a historian of the LA Canyons and former writer for the New Topanga Times. Together, we explore Topanga's iconic rock legends and the songs inspired by this enchanting area. Was there truly a roadhouse that sparked Jim Morrison’s lyrics in “Roadhouse Blues”? Did a fateful house party in Topanga Canyon contribute to the breakup of one of the most successful bands of the late '60s? Which famous Topanga musician got his start with Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention before forming his own band? And did Ronald Reagan’s daughter really co-write a classic Eagles song? In light of the recent devastating fires, this episode pays tribute to the unique beauty of Topanga Canyon, nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains. Despite the challenges, this iconic area endures, and My Rock Moment is proud to celebrate its lasting rock ’n’ roll legacy. Playlist: “Ain’t That A Lot of Love’ Taj Mahal “Mr. Soul” Buffalo Springfield “Going Up The Country” Canned Heat “Roadhouse Blues” The Doors “I Wasn’t Born to Follow” The Byrds “Willin” Little Feat - Linda Ronstadt cover “Already Gone” Eagles “From Boulder to Birmingham” Emmylou Harris “On the Way Home” Buffalo Springfield “Long May You Run” CSNY You can find Emmeline Summerton at @lostcanyonsla on Instagram. bonusSUPPORT THIS PODCAST! Join Patreon Get some merch Donate to the fundraiser ~~~~ FEATURED SONG NICK – “Deal” (from The Metrogrande Sessions) In this 25th PODFAST, I get personal. Longtime fans might be aware that I’m from Philadelphia, and while I’ve been a New Yorker for a couple of decades, Philly is still my favorite city. My third favorite city in the US is New Orleans, which as a musician and music lover makes a ton of sense. A few years ago, I started noticing a bunch of connections between those two cities. Inspired by watching this year’s Mummer’s Parade (look it up), I decided to finally flesh out these parallel worlds, in music and beyond. Are familiar at all with either city? Are they among your favorites? Do these connections ring true to you? Are there other connections I missed? Discuss dammit! ~~~~ *intro music credit: REC - "You Make Me Wanna" (from RECcollection: The Best of REC 2007-2020) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Only Three Lads: Top 5 Almost Famous Bands
This week, we focus on the bands who were at the precipice of becoming huge...rave reviews, prominent live gigs, radio support...yet, fame and fortune somehow eluded them. Our Third Lad is someone who knows all about this - in Alex Boucher's new memoir, Three and a Half Minutes of Fame, the seasoned writer draws from his firsthand experiences in "almost famous" indie/punk bands Three and a Half Minutes, Travis Cut, and Jaff, and boy band NV. "Three and a Half Minutes of Fame" takes readers on a compelling journey through the tumultuous music scene of the 1990s, as experienced by protagonist Alex, who embarks on a quest for fame after signing a record deal at the tender age of 17. Over the span of seven years, Alex finds himself on the cusp of stardom multiple times, rubbing shoulders with iconic bands like The Pogues, Suede, Blur, and Mansun, as well as encountering figures such as Patti Boyd. However, Alex's journey is far from glamorous. Along the way, he confronts neo-Nazis, navigates the gritty world of gangsta rap, accidentally smokes crack, and grapples with personal tragedies, mental health challenges, and the trauma of sexual abuse. Set against the backdrop of the 1990s—a decade marked by cultural shifts and the rise of alternative music scenes—this memoir offers an authentic glimpse into the highs and lows of pursuing fame before the era of social media. Amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 lockdowns, Boucher took the opportunity to document his memories of the 90s music scene, resulting in a poignant memoir that sheds light on the untold stories of those who strive for fame but ultimately fall short. "Three and a Half Minutes of Fame" offers readers an intimate and revealing account of one man's journey through the trials and triumphs of the music industry, ultimately serving as a testament to resilience, creativity, and the enduring allure of chasing one's dreams. Ep 93Prisoners of Rock and Roll -- Our Favorite TV Themes
EWe’re back! On this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we’re flipping on the tube and talking about television theme songs! These are the tracks that play during the opening credits and get stuck in your head for the rest of the week. From classics like Cheers and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to rock-driven intros like The Sopranos or Friends, TV theme songs are often as iconic as the shows themselves. They set the tone, build the vibe, and sometimes, they even tell a story better than the show ever could (looking at you, Gilligan’s Island). So grab the remote, plop down on the couch, and tune in as we talk about the songs that had us singing along before we even knew what binge-watching was. Ugly American Werewolf in London: The Firm featuring Jimmy Page & Paul Rodgers
Jimmy Page was in rough shape by the end of Led Zeppelin. His addictions had ravaged his body and he didn't contribute nearly as much to 1979's In Through The Out Door as he did all previous Zeppelin records. After the death of John Bonham, Jimmy fulfilled his obligations to release Coda, provided the soundtrack to Death Wish 2 as a favor to his neighbor and embarked on a brief fundraiser tour with lots of legends - The ARMS Tour. But he hadn't been very creative and wasn't keeping himself in match shape. After spending some time with his Swan Song brother Paul Rodgers (Free, Bad Company), he concocted a plan to put together a new supergroup for the 80s. WIth Rodgers handling vocal and primary songwriter duties, Jimmy also enlisted Chris Slade (Tom Jones, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, AC/DC, UAWIL #91 guest) and "The Fretless Monster" Tony Franklin who he worked with on Roy Harper's album Whatever Happened to Jugula? This powerful lineup was to be the vehicle that would rejuvenate Jimmy Page and put him back on the road to superstardom. However, Page's contributions weren't what fans had come to expect from the guitar hero and it seemed that Jimmy was a bit out of place in a world dominated by MTV. Single Radioactive was an AOR hit and showcased a bit of what the band could do, ultimately helping their self-titled debut to gold status in the US. But most of the album is uneven and Page isn't showing up with the killer solos that were his calling card. However, Tony Franklin is an absolute monster on this record, filling in the gaps that Page leaves between his flourishes and playing well off the ever steady Slade. While Rodgers vocals are as strong as ever, his songwriting doesn't quite live up to the standard of his previous bands. It was a solid debut which led to a strong sophomore effort in Mean Business (1986) but because it celebrates it's 40th on February 11, 2025, we thought we'd take a hard look at The Firm and why it didn't hit the heights we all hoped it would Check out our new website: Ugly American Werewolf in London Website Visit our sponsor RareVinyl.com and use the code UGLY to save 10%! Shout It Out Loudcast: "KISS Alive II"
EThis week Tom & Zeus open Shout It Out Loudcast's Season 7 by reviewing the 1977 legendary live album, KISS Alive II! KISS was perhaps at highest peak in 1977, commercially and musically. They decided to follow the same formula as they did previously. So after Alive, they released three more studio album and now they wanted to release their second live album, KISS Alive II! This live album would not have any songs from the previous live album, so KISS Alive II would not be an actual real concert. The new songs from Destroyer, Rock And Roll Over & Love Gun would only make up 3 sides, so the band decided to add 5 new tracks to complete the double album. The cover of KISS Alive II is known for the images of the band members, the inserts and perhaps the greatest gatefold in vinyl history. For many in the KISS Army this album was the album that solidified their KISS fandom. Fans are often split between Alive vs Alive II. This is SIOL's 10th live album review. The guy's breakdown the album, the tracks and of course Paul Stanley's stage banter as well. They list their top 5 favorite live tracks and rank the cover and the album against the 7 live albums by KISS that were previously reviewed. They also rank the 5 new tracks as well. This episode is filled with rankings, bold claims and analysis done SIOL style. So alright Love Gun! Rock N Roll Archaeology Shorts: "A Complete Unknown" Gets Bob Dylan's Story Right - Even When It's Wrong
In this special RNRA Short, we set our sights on Bob Dylan’s journey from scrappy young folksinger to the electric wonder who rocked the 1965 Newport Folk Festival. We’re talking about “A Complete Unknown,” James Mangold’s new biopic starring Timothée Chalamet, and how it blends faithful biography with a dash of good old mythmaking. We’ll uncover the inspiration Bob drew from Woody Guthrie, spotlight the unwavering support (and frustrations) of Joan Baez, and check in on cameo moments from that Nashville cat Johnny Cash. Along the way, we’ll talk “poetic truth,” break down some of the film’s creative liberties, and dig deep into Dylan’s own transformation—how he blew open the boundaries between folk and rock for generations to come. If you love the idea of cinematic storytelling that captures both the magic and the mess of a music legend, then you’re in the right place.
