Show Notes

We are in the Back to School Success Series in which I talk about all school-related anxieties and how to maximally support anxious students to become masters over anxiety.

In today's episode, I start addressing the big topic of School Refusal. It is such a big topic that I had to break the issue into three parts.

In part 1 today, I lay the foundations of all the important considerations we need to set these students up for success. Don't miss this episode - school refusal is a psychiatric crisis and when these students do not get the support they need, they are vulnerable to a whole host of social, emotional, psychological, and health risks.

In today's episode, I mention Youth Mental Health Canada's survey on school refusal. Check it out here: https://ymhc.ngo/research/research-surveys/

AND, if you want to deep dive with me and learn exactly how to do a functional analysis and design an effective re-entry plan in managing school avoidance, don't miss out on my upcoming School Refusal training! (https://bit.ly/schoolrefusalworkshop)

*IMPORTANT!

Remember: our responses are ALWAYS supportive and empathetic. The strategies I discuss are designed to

strengthen a child's emotional resilience within the context of a secure and supportive relationship.

Secure attachment ensures that children feel safe, supported, and understood, which is essential for fostering independence and emotional growth.

The goal is to avoid reinforcing anxiety through unhelpful responses while still providing the necessary connection children need to thrive. This approach is about finding a balance between supportive empathy and confidence that promotes healthy emotional development.
