Listen to the full episode here https://nemoashong.com [Real-time calibration for powerful leadership-> people pleaser to Pioneer leader] I recently had a conversation with a business owner exploring potential partnerships. Mid-way through the conversation (literally 45 mins into it), I realized that I was spending my energy and our time trying to position myself in a way that would impress, make her feel I would be a valuable asset, and come across as an expert she want to work with. The worst part is that I’m good at that, which meant I’d be getting pulled in for "opportunities" I didn’t really want. AND she wouldn’t consider me for the types of projects that actually align with me and my highest value and values. I had spent 45 mins slipping into a persona based not on who I was but rather who I felt she wanted me to be! More on the leadership strategies I used to navigate myself to a place that now has us exploring business opportunities that actually serve the people we want in ways that align with what we’re about in the video. -- One of the biggest challenges for Pioneer leaders is settling for people pleasing rather than authentic servant leadership. It makes sense: we’re multi -talented, multi-passionate, energetic and empathetic leaders. Part of what allows us to pursue these talents and passions amongst varied groups and people is our empathetic ability to pick up on what we feel others want to hear, give them that, and then use micro- indicators in body language, words, tone, and energy to guide us on what’s "right" in the conversation. That’s people-pleasing 101 and a tool I’ve used over and over as a leader to feel "accepted" and to "build connection". However, there are levels of leadership that go beyond acceptance, connection, and pleasing which include belonging, relationship, and serving. The month is geared towards transformation: transforming as individuals, as leaders, as teams, as communities, and as cultures. There’s an important distinction that applies for us Pianeers throughout the month, which will be explored more thoroughly as days go by. Distinction: “FEAR LESS vs FEARLESS” Fear as an emotion and feeling is incredibly powerful. As Pioneer leaders, one of our goals is leveraging ALL of us to create impact, income, and influence. What’s been coming up with my clients is language around "finding" the voice. This suggests that it’s something external and out of their grasp. It’s also a commonly used phrase, so it leads to common results. TO FREE ACKNOWLEDGES IT WAS ALWAYS YOURS TO BEGIN WITH I choose the distinction of "Freeing" your voice to restore power and ownership back to you immediately. You already have your voice. It’s within you and has always been. We’ve just learned how to trap it within a cage of convention that prevents that voice from being let loose on the world - even if you know exactly what it is you’d want to be saying (writing, creating, painting, etc). FREEING YOU VOICE CAN HAPPEN IN AN INSTANT The work of a Pioneer leader is simply to let that voice free. Heads up: when first unleashed it will likely be raw. That is OK and just part of the process. As you free it up more and more, you’ll continue to refine it. And from there, once you have tamed your free voice, you can evolve it and let it grow. There’s more coming to mind, and I choose to stop here. On the other side of the same coin is the opposite-but-equal approach of “fitting out”. If fitting-in involves you making choices to not stick out in order to be accepted, fitting out involves you making choices specifically to stick out and this “not need” (haha) to be accepted. More clarity forthcoming as I gain more awareness and insight around it.

Some people want luck. Some people find luck. And a smaller subset still is able to create luck (even if they do so subconsciously). I'm happy to introduce you Jaspreet who is an Outlier, Pioneer, and Maverick who consistently creates opportunities where few others would think possible. During our conversation, we call out 4 unique elements to his natural approach to create luck. The point here isn't to take what works for him and make it yours. Instead, I invite you to listen not for his 4 elements, but to the process, we used to call out those elements. While you're listening, use our conversation as a light and reflection into your own life and business. Questions to consider: Where in your life have you created tremendous success with such ease and comfort that it could only be described as "luck"? (e.g. 10x results for 10% effort aka 100x) What conditions do you need in order for "luck" to meet you at it's highest probability? Where might you be downplaying or ignoring your own natural talents because they are in fact "natural" and easy? What would happen to your life/business if you came from that "way of being" intentionally over the next 3 years?

CAPITALIZING ON THE GIFTS THAT FEAR BRINGS US Do you have a mission or vision of the way your world could look that scares you? I’ve been on vacation in Sri Lanka for the past week which has given me a chance to see my business and my impact from a higher / big picture vantage point. Between the waterfalls, hikes, tea factories, and beaches, my mind has been drifting to the sheer size of the mission we stand for at Empjoyment: to bring together a truly inclusive and empowered world. It’s that last word “ world” that has been bringing up a sense of fear for me. As I travel more and more, I’m finding out just how nuanced the challenges to true inclusion are in different countries, communities, and ways of work. If I had to dive deeper on this particular fear, it’s the fear that I’m being naive around how the world works. It’s the fear that I’ll be utterly unsuccessful and a failure because I tried to “boil the ocean”. It’s the fear that if I fail, I’ll be reinforcing the more restricting belief that the path to success is in conformity and marginally improving the status quo rather than being able to set my own unique path - essentially one of core principles I operate from. And a fear of wasting my potential by pursuing a unobtainable ideal. From these fears came both a revelation and a reminder of something I once knew but forgot. As we start things off with the Outliers, Pioneers, and Mavericks conversations, I feel it's important to make sure I'm showing the real journey, not just the polished version that makes it all look easy and flawless. So let's start with what I don't want you to know about me... I recorded this conversation in December of 2017... and didn't publish it for another year and a half. There are a lot of reasons for that including energy fatigue of keeping up a podcast, not feeling aligned with where the podcast was going, and probably the most honest of them all, embarrassment because I had let so much time go by since we had initially recorded the session. I feel it's important to document my journey as an Outlier, Pioneer, and Maverick myself. And one of the things I've learned is that if you choose to be the first, the only, or one of a kind, there are times when it can feel scary to put your ambitions, dreams, and visions into the world. If there's anything I feel the simple act of releasing this conversation 1.5 years later shows, is that it's never too late to create the future you want to see in the present you are in.

We are “a lot”. That’s why we’ll change the world! I’m done holding back. I’m done shrinking for the masses. I am a lot and that’s one of my greatest assets. This video was a video I started making for myself as my energy around the epiphany was too much to write. Then the energy became too much to just keep to myself. This video is for you and all leaders who are tired of holding back who you are to fit-in. Who are done with turning down who you are because others can’t handle it. Who have learned to shrink because others say “you’re too much”! I say you are even more amazing than you know and we need even more of you. Your world, our world, and the world needs a set of leaders who come from a place of abundance, who share powerful visions and positive possibilities, and bring all of who they are to create a future distinct from the past.
