Ep 153Dear Cancer: New Tests, New Treatments, and New Hope

The presenting sponsor for today's episode is Elevation Oncology, elevating precision medicine to the forefront of every cancer treatment journey. On the show today, I welcome the esteemed Dr. Stephen Liu, Associate Professor of Medicine, Director of Thoracic Oncology, and Director of Developmental Therapeutics at Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center of Georgetown University. At a time when cancer treatment is more about your DNA and your RNA than where in your body cancer is — it's more important than ever to continue elevating the conversation about making biomarker testing a mandatory part of care. Why napalm everything if your genes make you eligible for a specific kind of therapy that's wayyyy better than proverbial napalm? NRG1 Fusion is an RNA test done on solid tumors — for the purposes of this episode Lung Cancer tumors — but this is a test that everyone with lung cancer needs to get out of the gate. You enter the "I have lung cancer store" and — BOOM — you get this test, which can make or break the trajectory of your care. From the seriousness of Phase II enrollment challenges to inane musings about Dartmouth, Boston Market, and the children's book The Three Billy Goats Gruff, strap in for a serious discussion about precision oncology and biomarker testing, especially if you or someone you know has lung cancer. Ep 151Scott Slater: How The Stupid Cancer Sausage Was Made

E

On the show today, my guest is Scott Slater, a longtime friend, a former colleague at Stupid Cancer, and one of the earliest activists who helped build the original young adult cancer movement back in the mid-2000s. Yes, Scott is a cancer survivor, but that’s just one of his MANY titles. He’s a software engineer and app developer…. He’s the founder and punk-in-chief at Codepunk, which is an epic web development company. He’s an accomplished musician, and NOW he can add “composer of musicals” to his long list of creds. As the aging GenX’ers that we are, Scott and I wax poetic as about cancer in the age of “Woke Culture,” his new musical, “Fable,” and how the hell we’re somehow still here after a combined 35 years of survivorship. Plus, Scott correctly identifies the idiot’s bias as the “Dunn Krueger Effect.” Alex Trebek is surely beaming from on high. And for information on us, visit https://OffScrip.com and follow @MatthewZachary, @VaxOnPod, and @OffScripHealth on Twitter.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 149Lynch Syndrome: Try To Not Get Cancer?

E

Today on the show, we talk to powerhouse couple David and Robin Dubin, who founded Alive and Kickn to advocate for those with the Lynch gene. At age 29, Dave was diagnosed with colon cancer and Lynch Syndrome. Few have heard of it, but Dave and Robin are trying to change that. Because Lynch is a genetic pre-condition to cancer that affects 1 out of every 279 people, and most people don’t even know they have it. Ep 147Cancer and Nutrition: Who'd've thunk?

E

On the show today, Susan Bratton is a legacy BFF of mine dating back to the LIVESTRONG days at the dawn of the young adult cancer movement. It was a time when "cancer survivorship" was evolving into a real boy and quality of life became tantamount to quality of care. Susan was an MBA who worked in finance when one of her best friends, who was in perfect shape at the time and in peak physical condition, got cancer for no reason and tragically passed away. She soon founded Meals To Heal, a nonprofit food-delivery service that delivered handcrafted meals to cancer patients who couldn't cook for themselves and lacked access to decent and nutritious meals. She's now the CEO of Savor Health, a B2B digital health platform providing personalized, clinically, and contextually appropriate nutrition interventions to cancer patients and those with other chronic medical conditions, via SMS text with Ina, an "Intelligent Nutrition Assistant" chatbot. Ep 145Origins: The Dawn of Digital Health

E

On the show today, I am joined live in-studio by Alex Fair and Aaron Michael Buch, two innovators in the patient advocacy and digital health and innovation sector, each from different endpoints in time. Starting as early as 2008, Alex has had the good fortune to have worked on some genuinely pioneering initiatives in the early days of Health 2.0, including creating MedStartr and its many branches into crowdfunding, incubation, and acceleration of hundreds of startups. Aaron founded Patients.com in 2014 when digital health was emerging from its post-embryonic stages and has seen his all-in-one practice growth platform make healthcare suck less for thousands.

Ep 144[REBROADCAST] Cycle of Lives: Grief, Loss, Redemption, Opportunity, and Advocacy

E

“What do you do with the mad that you feel?” — One of the more definitive quotes from the definitive Mr. Rogers. For my guest today, David Richman, the choice he made after losing his sister to cancer was to turn pain into passion, lace-up, and in true Forrest Gump fashion, JUST START RUNNING. 85 miles between Cancun and Tulum in Mexico. 104 miles up the Pacific Coast Highway. 50 Iron Man Triathlons. And then an introspective search for similar and familiar voices to learn and heal from that turned into a 5,000-mile bicycle tour from California to Florida to New York City. I feel even more out of shape just saying those words into the microphone. David’s self-discovery journey brought him comfort, closure, and common threads, and his new book, “Cycle of Lives,” is proof that grief, loss, and bereavement can be opportunities you never expected to have. Prepare to be inspired and enjoy the show. Enjoy the show.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 139The Cancer Mavericks EP3: The March on Washington

E

Advocacy can take many forms in the cancer community — from advocating for yourself or a loved one to receive the best possible treatment to calling your Congressperson or testifying on Capitol Hill to demand increased access to care. This episode explores different ways cancer mavericks have elevated survivors’ needs and improved their lives, including the pioneering patient navigation model created by Dr. Harold Freeman at Harlem Hospital, the story of Ellen Stovall’s fearless and collaborative approach to policy, shaped around a shared agenda to represent the needs of all cancer survivors, and the landmark 1998 March on Washington called Coming Together To Conquer Cancer. For more information about this series, visit https://CancerMavericks.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 135This Little Diagnostic Went To Market...

E

On the show today, I'm thrilled to welcome – LIVE IN STUDIO — Liz Cormier-May, CEO of Mammogen, and Marty Keiser, CEO at IV Bioholdings. It's hard to blend funny, entertaining wit with healthcare jargon like diagnostics, market access, go-to-market strategy, etc. And yet, somehow, we did it. The process is gnarly and ridiculous but, now more than ever, it's actually possible to NOT GET CANCER because of much more accessible and affordable diagnostics. Some of them are free; some are even over the counter. But getting into the hands of doctors or retail consumers is a whole other story, let alone issues with the FDA and safety. Well, we cut through all that crap and get to the brass taxes of how the only real thing moving the needle are consumers who vote with their wallets. For more information, visit https://OffScripMedia.com and follow @MZOutofPatients, @MatthewZachary, @VaxOnPod, and @OffScripMedia on Twitter.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Ep 133How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall?

E

Today, LIVE here at OffScrip Media studios, I welcome my incomparably talented friend Rebecca Cherry. She and I met almost 20 years ago. We hit it off as members of a niche-within-a-niche club, that being young adult cancer survivor professional musician/composers. How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Be Rebecca Cherry, because she's performed there, too. And if that's not enough, she's a single mom raising a beautiful daughter named Ara. Ep 129The Cancer Mavericks EP2: The Alumni Association

By the 1980s, cancer was no longer a death sentence. But the question of what surviving actually meant was unanswered. Cancer survivors had to navigate issues around employment, relationships, and the emotional and physical side effects of treatment in a world that largely didn’t know what to do with them. (and they were still called “victims.”) In 1985, a young doctor named Fitzhugh Mullan wrote an essay called “Seasons of Survival” about his own experience with cancer. His piece helped popularize the term “cancer survivor” and resonated with a growing number of survivors, who were starting to form support groups around the country. Among them was Catherine Logan Carrillo, the founder of People Living Through Cancer in New Mexico, who asked Fitzhugh to help her convene an “alumni association” for cancer survivors. And they did, during one monumental weekend in Albuquerque. Ep 1271990s Cancer: AOL or Bust with Steve Friedman

E

On the show today, my brother from another mother — Steve Friedman, is the Senior Advisor of Operations for SEER at the National Cancer Institute. (We'll get into all the acronyms later in the show because I know you're looking forward to that.) Steve was diagnosed back in the 1990s with testicular cancer while in his 20s – so brings with him a profound perspective of progress, not just for young adult cancer, but for cancer policy, research, and institutional growth at the Federal level. While all those free AOL CDs back then drove us crazy, Steve put them to good use and found a community of his peers using what we decided to call "dial-up support." His storied career as a public servant, nonprofit leader, and cancer advocate isn't just inspiring; it's a perfect example of how we can make the most of the time that has been given to us. Ep 123Brock Yetso and The Ulman Foundation

E

Brock Yetso is the President & CEO at the Ulman Foundation, one of the original young adult cancer advocacy organizations. Borne in the late 1990s, the Ulman Foundation (formerly the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults) pioneered the very idea of adolescent and young adult cancer as a thing, first and foremost, long before the data and the research manifested in practice. I consider Brock a progenitor and mentor who helped me find my place and my voice before Stupid Cancer was a real boy. Thanks to groups like the Ulman Foundation, 25 years later, young adult cancer is now mainstream oncology — but there's still no short supply of new cancer diagnoses each year, which is why their work continues to this day. Ep 118Hippocrates Shrugged: How the Culture of Medicine Kills Doctors and Patients

E

Dr. Robert Pearl is the former CEO of Kaiser Permanente, host of the podcast, "Fixing Healthcare," and a clinical professor of plastic surgery at Stanford. He joins me to talk about his new book, "Uncaring: How the Culture of Medicine Kills Doctors and Patients" — you know, an uplifting story — which is tackling head-on issues well beyond physician burnout and the flawed culture that guides medical professionals in their practice.Dr. Pearl is also one of the more vocal and outspoken expatriates from our fabulously broken healthcare ecosystem who is fueled by, among other things, having had family members die unnecessarily due to hospital errors. This is Hippocrates Shrugged if there ever were such a metaphor. Ep 117Frenetic Genius with Double Dare Champion Jamie Wells, MD, FAAP

E

Dr. Jamie Wells is many things, but boring is not one of them. Prepare yourself for some frenetic genius conversation with the newly-appointed Director of the Research Science Institute (RSI) collaboratively sponsored by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE). What's more, she is on the Leadership Council member of The Wistar Institute, an Advisor to the Global Blockchain Business Council, and an Adjunct Professor at Drexel University's School of Biomedical Engineering. But what's most important about Jaime has nothing to do with any of that because she's a Nickelodeon Double Dare Champion and friend of Marc Sommers. Need I say more? Strap in for a conversation filled with so much IQ that you may need to listen to it backward like a Led Zepplin album for it to make sense. No, but seriously, she's going to blow your mind.

Ep 115What is a "Performance Psychologist"?

E

Performance psychologist Dr. Benjamin Bernstein is a very well-respected doctor of applied psychology, public speaker, coach, lecturer, and author of many books, including "Stressed Out! for Parents: How to Be Calm, Confident, and Focused." He's also a musical theater nerd, composer of operas, and fellow pianist. Ticks all the right boxes. Anyway, he dropped by OffScrip Media Studios for an in-person conversation – how novel – and not only did we compare notes on both being fully vaccinated, we had a fascinating discussion about stress, anxiety, stage fright, what a modern-day coach means in 2021, and how, back in the day, it still wasn't ok to tell someone dealing with all sorts of crap to "just get over it." Ep 113Cockeyed Pessimism: Michael Millenson Is "Impatient"

E

Michael Millenson is a health policy strategist, consultant, legacy agitator of the status quo, and President at Health Quality Advisors. I was happy to sit back and play armchair expert as we attempted to deconstruct and "schoolhouse rock" what exactly "Healthcare Reform" actually means. With a new administration and perhaps a more cockeyed pessimist view on advancing the ball, could there be even the slightest chance that health care could suck less sooner than later? Well, that's what we're here to find out. Ep 109Are We There Yet? Are We There Yet?

E

On the show today, returning champion Dr. Jean Luc-Neptune, Founder at Suntra Modern Recovery.  This is JL's third time on the program but what makes this appearance even more remarkable is that we taped the show in person at our studios in Manhattan. We're both fully vaxxed, and I think I was the first person he'd seen in person since the pandemic began, obvi not his family. Besides being a medical doctor with an MBA from Wharton, Jean-Luc he's funny as hell with a slick wit and incredible insights into public health and consumer behavior.
