Ep 129The Cancer Mavericks EP2: The Alumni Association
By the 1980s, cancer was no longer a death sentence. But the question of what surviving actually meant was unanswered. Cancer survivors had to navigate issues around employment, relationships, and the emotional and physical side effects of treatment in a world that largely didn’t know what to do with them. (and they were still called “victims.”) In 1985, a young doctor named Fitzhugh Mullan wrote an essay called “Seasons of Survival” about his own experience with cancer. His piece helped popularize the term “cancer survivor” and resonated with a growing number of survivors, who were starting to form support groups around the country. Among them was Catherine Logan Carrillo, the founder of People Living Through Cancer in New Mexico, who asked Fitzhugh to help her convene an “alumni association” for cancer survivors. And they did, during one monumental weekend in Albuquerque. Ep 1271990s Cancer: AOL or Bust with Steve Friedman
EOn the show today, my brother from another mother — Steve Friedman, is the Senior Advisor of Operations for SEER at the National Cancer Institute. (We'll get into all the acronyms later in the show because I know you're looking forward to that.) Steve was diagnosed back in the 1990s with testicular cancer while in his 20s – so brings with him a profound perspective of progress, not just for young adult cancer, but for cancer policy, research, and institutional growth at the Federal level. While all those free AOL CDs back then drove us crazy, Steve put them to good use and found a community of his peers using what we decided to call "dial-up support." His storied career as a public servant, nonprofit leader, and cancer advocate isn't just inspiring; it's a perfect example of how we can make the most of the time that has been given to us. EToday on the show, I welcome an extraordinary young woman —> Grace Wethor is a living unicorn of talent and intelligence. Guitarist. Pianist, Trapeze Artist, Figure Skater, Model, Author, TED Speaker — and 6-year survivor of an inoperable brain stem glioma that she was diagnosed with at 13 years old in 2015. Grace is the author of "You're So Lucky" and a new docu-series called "You're So Lucky: The Next Chapter." She joins me to talk about what it's like to have your whole life interrupted at such a young age, and we compare notes against her experiences in the 2010s vs. my eerily similar experiences in the 1990s. Spoiler Alert: We've come pretty far, but we've got a ways to go. Ep 123Brock Yetso and The Ulman Foundation
EBrock Yetso is the President & CEO at the Ulman Foundation, one of the original young adult cancer advocacy organizations. Borne in the late 1990s, the Ulman Foundation (formerly the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults) pioneered the very idea of adolescent and young adult cancer as a thing, first and foremost, long before the data and the research manifested in practice. I consider Brock a progenitor and mentor who helped me find my place and my voice before Stupid Cancer was a real boy. Thanks to groups like the Ulman Foundation, 25 years later, young adult cancer is now mainstream oncology — but there's still no short supply of new cancer diagnoses each year, which is why their work continues to this day. Ep 121Introducing: The Cancer Mavericks
Most people don’t know that you’re considered a cancer survivor at the moment of diagnosis. It wasn’t always this way. Sixty years ago, a cancer diagnosis was a death sentence. And if you did survive, you were left to figure out the rest of your life on your own.But some survivors demanded something different, something better. From OffScrip Media, this is The Cancer Mavericks, a deep-dive narrative into the people who fought for better treatment, forced doctors to listen, and pushed America to see the human side of the disease.Episodes of this series will publish monthly through the end of December 2021 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the National Cancer Act of 1971. Ep 118Hippocrates Shrugged: How the Culture of Medicine Kills Doctors and Patients
EDr. Robert Pearl is the former CEO of Kaiser Permanente, host of the podcast, "Fixing Healthcare," and a clinical professor of plastic surgery at Stanford. He joins me to talk about his new book, "Uncaring: How the Culture of Medicine Kills Doctors and Patients" — you know, an uplifting story — which is tackling head-on issues well beyond physician burnout and the flawed culture that guides medical professionals in their practice.Dr. Pearl is also one of the more vocal and outspoken expatriates from our fabulously broken healthcare ecosystem who is fueled by, among other things, having had family members die unnecessarily due to hospital errors. This is Hippocrates Shrugged if there ever were such a metaphor. Ep 117Frenetic Genius with Double Dare Champion Jamie Wells, MD, FAAP
EDr. Jamie Wells is many things, but boring is not one of them. Prepare yourself for some frenetic genius conversation with the newly-appointed Director of the Research Science Institute (RSI) collaboratively sponsored by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE). What's more, she is on the Leadership Council member of The Wistar Institute, an Advisor to the Global Blockchain Business Council, and an Adjunct Professor at Drexel University's School of Biomedical Engineering. But what's most important about Jaime has nothing to do with any of that because she's a Nickelodeon Double Dare Champion and friend of Marc Sommers. Need I say more? Strap in for a conversation filled with so much IQ that you may need to listen to it backward like a Led Zepplin album for it to make sense. No, but seriously, she's going to blow your mind. For more information, visit https://OffScripMedia.com and follow @MZOutofPatients, @MatthewZachary, @VaxOnPod, and @OffScripMedia on Twitter.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

EPerformance psychologist Dr. Benjamin Bernstein is a very well-respected doctor of applied psychology, public speaker, coach, lecturer, and author of many books, including "Stressed Out! for Parents: How to Be Calm, Confident, and Focused." He's also a musical theater nerd, composer of operas, and fellow pianist. Ticks all the right boxes. Anyway, he dropped by OffScrip Media Studios for an in-person conversation – how novel – and not only did we compare notes on both being fully vaccinated, we had a fascinating discussion about stress, anxiety, stage fright, what a modern-day coach means in 2021, and how, back in the day, it still wasn't ok to tell someone dealing with all sorts of crap to "just get over it." Ep 113Cockeyed Pessimism: Michael Millenson Is "Impatient"
EMichael Millenson is a health policy strategist, consultant, legacy agitator of the status quo, and President at Health Quality Advisors. I was happy to sit back and play armchair expert as we attempted to deconstruct and "schoolhouse rock" what exactly "Healthcare Reform" actually means. With a new administration and perhaps a more cockeyed pessimist view on advancing the ball, could there be even the slightest chance that health care could suck less sooner than later? Well, that's what we're here to find out. In addition to our discussion about what it takes to be one of the "good" lobbyists without giving yourself a heart attack, we talk about how horrible it is that infertility was deemed a disability by the US Supreme Court in a 1998 ruling. EOn the show today, returning champion Dr. Jean Luc-Neptune, Founder at Suntra Modern Recovery. This is JL's third time on the program but what makes this appearance even more remarkable is that we taped the show in person at our studios in Manhattan. We're both fully vaxxed, and I think I was the first person he'd seen in person since the pandemic began, obvi not his family. Besides being a medical doctor with an MBA from Wharton, Jean-Luc he's funny as hell with a slick wit and incredible insights into public health and consumer behavior. So join us as we embark on a "no stupid questions" rampage about all the fuckery afoot as things maybe get back to normal?See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

EOn the show today —> The venerable Craig Lipset, a storied luminary in the annals of clinical trial innovation — and I mean innovation with a Capital I. (None of that lower case crap happening here on my watch) Craig is the Founder of Clinical Innovation Partners and the Co-Founder of Decentralized Trials & Research Alliance (DTRA), and a proud expatriated Long Islander who pronounces Rutgers the proper way and has a penchant for Wegmans. He ticks every box. He's also been at the literal forefront of clinical trial research and development for over 30 years. [BONUS] "Jen Horonjeff is Noncompliant" Patient Data Is Valuable? Huh?
bonusEToday on "Noncompliant," Jennifer and Matthew discuss what happens when a bunch of hospitals realizes that patient data is valuable. Obviously, they form a company to band together and sell it! Sure there may be an upside for society and the hospitals that stand to profit from it, but on the individual patient level, it not only leaves them out of the upside but may strip them of their agency and choice. Listen in as we unpack this developing story and muse on the latest with the vaccine rollout.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

EOn the show today, Judith L. Pearson, triple-negative breast cancer survivor, patent advocate, and author of the new book, From Shadows to Life: A Biography of the Cancer Survivorship Movement. If you're a long-time listener, you already know that if I had to fanboy around only one cancer advocacy organization, it would obviously be Stupid Cancer BUT, if one more slot opened up, it would be the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship or NCCS as it is called because acronyms are our friends. This book is a labor of love that digs into the past 50 years of cancer advocacy and blends medical history with a group biography of average citizens who created a social movement that continues to this day to help millions of people when they hear the words. What is absolutely fascinating about all of this is that there are actually two sets of data, one concluded in 2018 and then, with the pandemic, they repeated the same study and compared the differences. Spoiler – the results were shocking and yet… not shocking as you can imagine. EBack on the show today in this special bonus episode of Out of Patients, a little segment we're calling "Scrambled Eggs." with returning champion guest Alice Crisci, cancer survivor, fertility activist, and Founder and CEO of MedAnswers. What triggered this conversation was a recent article in Ms. Magazine by cancer survivor Madison Chapman opening up a wormhole about all the stupidity and ridiculousness surrounding fertility preservation and fertility rights issues; unnecessary obstacles that somehow still lie in the road nearly 45 years later when the science first began. Note that if you are interested in fertility advocacy and what you are about to listen to pisses you off just enough, our partnership with the nonprofit RESOLVE may be just the thing you're looking for to take action, join the movement, and give back. Let's jump down the rabbit hole.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

[BONUS] "Jen Horonjeff is Noncompliant" The Clinical Trial Quid-Pro-Quo
bonusEOn this bonus episode of "Jen Horonjeff is Noncompliant," Jen brings to Matthew Zachary's attention the idea that patients who enroll in clinical trials should more than benefit from the therapeutic aspects of treatment. After all, aren't they essentially helping a private sector on their go-to-market drug approval and commercialization strategy? After all, if you're helping a business make more money, shouldn't you be entitled to some of that sweet, sweet cheddar yourself? Say, perhaps, some equity stake in their growth? Food for thought because inquiring minds want to know.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
