This week I am talking to Dr Marylin Mendoza about her book 'We Do Not Die Alone: Jesus Is Coming to Get Me in a White Pickup Truck'Marilyn Mendoza, Ph.D., is a clinical instructor in the psychiatry department at Tulane University Medical Center and a private practice psychologist specializing in bereavement.The book is an amazing chronicle of the nurses who have been present at the bedside of their dying patients. These patients have seen familiar "people" who have come to help them make their transitions. These experiences have left the patients, their families and their nurses with a deep sense of peace.These are just some of the stories that were collected while conducting a survey on the effects of deathbed visions on nurses. A deathbed vision (DBV) is a vision or experience that the individual has before dying. They can occur immediately before death, days or even weeks prior. Patients have reported seeing dead family members, religious figures or beautiful scenery. With a DBV, unlike a Near Death Experience (NDE), death is final and no one comes back to talk about the experience.The stories were a product of a survey conducted among various nursing professionals in Louisiana prior to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and in Maryland in 2006. There were 234 respondents (221 Registered Nurses and 13 Licensed Practical Nurses) from hospices, hospitals, nursing conferences, nursing homes and home health facilities. The forms were filled out anonymously and with the exception of age and sex, no identifying information was given about the patients. The survey consists of 14 items which were developed to examine nurses’ perceptions of deathbed visions. The last item was a blank page in which nurses were asked to write about some of their more memorable experiences. The stories in this book are the result of these responses. The nurses’ words are as they were written.'A male hospice patient in his 60’s with cancer was minimally responsive and nearing transition when he sat up and began to call for his mother. He was smiling joyfully and described his mother as coming to get him in a white pickup truck. She was sitting in the passenger seat next to Jesus who was driving the truck. His little pet bird was sitting on Jesus’ shoulder. The man died shortly after this. Near Death Experience. This week I am talking to Natalie Sudman about her book 'Application of Impossible Things - My Near Death Experience in Iraq'.Natalie worked as a female civilian employee of the Army Corps of Engineers in Basrah and Nasiriyah, Iraq, she was riding in a truck when a roadside bomb destroyed the vehicle. As a result of the severe injuries her body received from this roadside bomb, Natalie had a near-death experience where she left her body and entered the spirit world. There it was decided that her work on Earth was not done and with the help of spirit guides, they repaired the body so she could reenter it. She retained the conscious memory of what happened and during the time in the hospital, more details returned. Before this experience, Sudman was dubious about anything that smacked of the paranormal. Near-Death Experience. This week I am talking to Pim van Lommel about his book 'Consciousness Beyond Life: The Science of the Near-Death Experience'. Near-Life Experiences. This week I am talking to Jeff O'Driscoll about his book 'Not Yet: Near-Life Experiences & Lessons Learned'. Jeff practiced emergency medicine in a level-one trauma center for twenty-five years and served as department chair for eight. He is board certified in internal medicine and is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Near Death Experience. Terminal lucidity. This week I am talking to Michael Nahm about Terminal lucidity. The unexpected return of mental clarity and memory shortly before death is a curious phenomenon that has so far received only little attention. The Enfield Poltergeist. This week on The Past Lives Podcast I am talking to Dr Melvyn Willin about the book 'The Enfield Poltergeist Tapes: One of the most disturbing cases in history. I have listened and transcribed all of the several hundred audio tapes that were made by Maurice Grosse and Guy Playfair during their investigation of the alleged poltergeist case that took place in Enfield some 40 years ago and I shall present, in chronological order, what occurred. It will then be your decision as to whether you believe the phenomena came from spirit entities; psychic forces; mistaken interpretations; hallucinations; naughty children or any other source you might wish to present. I shall strive very hard not to be influenced by what I have read, however intelligent it might be, and instead rely on my ears to describe what was happening via the tapes.I shall leave out the many hours of general conversation that took place between the parties concerned since I do not believe that the reader will be particularly interested in the weather; special offers in the local supermarket; or what happened in Coronation Street … except, of course, when any of these discussions may have been pertinent to the phenomena. I shall include some of the more humorous occurrences since the events occasionally demanded this. Perhaps some light relief from the sometimes all-pervading chaos. Because of their age some of the audio tapes were corrupted beyond recognition and at other times the sound quality was poor. Spirit Guides. The guest this week is Linda Deir. Near death experience. Dr Eben Alexander is my guest this week. We talk abut his amazing near death experience.Dr. Eben Alexander spent over 25 years as an academic neurosurgeon, including 15 years at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital, the Children’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. Over those years he personally dealt with hundreds of patients suffering from severe alterations in their level of consciousness. Many of those patients were rendered comatose by trauma, brain tumors, ruptured aneurysms, infections, or stroke. He thought he had a very good idea of how the brain generates consciousness, mind and spirit.In the predawn hours of November 10, 2008, he was driven into coma by a rare and mysterious bacterial meningo-encephalitis of unknown cause. He spent a week in coma on a ventilator, his prospects for survival diminishing rapidly. On the seventh day, to the surprise of everyone, he started to awaken.
