How different will the Browns' wide receivers look in 2022? Position breakdown
Fixing the passing game is a priority for the Browns this season. Of course the quarterback is a big part of that, but what about the pass catchers? Mary Kay Cabot, Scott Patsko, Ashley Bastock and Dan Labbe took a look at the Browns wide receivers, who might be back, what roles they will have and how the Browns might remake the position this offseason. Do they spend big in free agency? Do they have to take a receiver at No. 13? Is Jarvis Landry a Brown in 2022? They discuss all of it and more on our Thursday Orange and Brown Talk Podcast. What did this weekend of playoff games teach us about the Browns? Hey, Mary Kay!
The NFL Divisional Round gave us four fantastic playoff games. The Browns, of course, were a part of this round a year ago, losing in Kansas City a game short of the AFC Championship Game. This weekend saw kickers and quarterbacks take center stage and, funny thing, Browns fans want to know a thing or two about kickers and quarterbacks. So, what did we learn this weekend from the games? What did it teach us about the Browns offense and Baker Mayfield? Did we see a potential Browns quarterback play this weekend? Mary Kay Cabot answered questions from our Football Insider subscribers on our Tuesday edition of the podcast. Want to get involved in Football Insider? Click here for more info and to sign up. Mary Kay Cabot and Dan Labbe discussed the offseason for Mayfield and if there was anything to learn from his post-surgery video on Friday's Orange and Brown Talk Podcast. The Jared Goff Baker Mayfield Option: Trading him for a more established QB
On this final installment of The Mayfield Matrix on the Orange and Brown Talk Podcast, Dan Labbe, Mary Kay Cabot, Ashley Bastock, Scott Patsko and Doug Lesmerises look at the most drastic possible move the Browns could make at quarterback for 2022 -- trading Baker Mayfield for a more established QB. The Jared Goff trade for Matthew Stafford by the Los Angeles Rams a year ago is the example, and Doug lists seven names of quarterbacks somewhat in the Stafford mold that could maybe come available this offseason. If that happens, should the Browns consider a move? At the end of the pod, each member of the crew gives this option a rating, and then the fifth and final option wraps up. The Blake Bortles Baker Mayfield Option: Signing him to a short extension this offseason
Option 4 in our Mayfield Matrix series is probably the least likely -- what if the Browns just went ahead and signed Baker Mayfield to a short extension? The model here is the three-year extension that Jacksonville a bit unexpectedly gave to Blake Bortles in February of 2018 as he was entering his fifth season. It showed faith in an inconsistent QB, though the Jags had just made the AFC Championship Game. It didn't work out long term. Bortles was benched in Year 5 and then let go. But compared to letting Mayfield ride out his fifth-year option in 2022, this would be a sign of faith. Doug Lesmerises, Mary Kay Cabot, Scott Patsko, Dan Labbe and Ashley Bastock talk out this idea on the latest Orange and Brown Talk Podcast. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. The Carson Wentz Baker Mayfield Option: Drafting a QB this year to add to Mayfield
On the third option in the Mayfield Matrix, our exercise looking at everything the Browns could do with Baker Mayfield and the QB position in 2022, Dan Labbe, Ashley Bastock, Scott Patsko, Doug Lesmerises and Mary Kay Cabot are here to ponder the draft. What if the Browns draft a quarterback in the second or third round to develop behind Mayfield, and maybe serve as another option in 2022 if needed? The model for this is what the Philadelphia Eagles did with Carson Wentz going into his fifth season in 2020, when the Eagles drafted Jalen Hurts in the second round. Unlike Mayfield, Wentz was signed to an extension at that point, but Philly leaned into the quarterback position anyway. Wentz regressed, Hurts took the job by the end of the season, and the Eagles elevated Hurts into the starting role in 2021 and traded Wentz. The Browns have not drafted a quarterback since Mayfield, so it's time to invest in the position anyway. But what if they like a guy at pick No. 45? The Marcus Mariota Baker Mayfield Option: Bringing in a veteran as a hedge
It's Part 2 of the Mayfield Matrix as the Orange and Brown Talk crew looks at another way the Browns could handle their QB situation. What if the Browns brought in a veteran as a hedge, another QB who has started and could be a backup to Mayfield but also be ready to take over in 2022 if things don't go well? It would be a quarterback with more upside than Case Keenum, but not a QB who is so good he would demand to start in Cleveland. The example here is what the Tennessee Titans did with Marcus Mariota when they brought him back as the starter again in Year 5 in 2019 without an extension, like the Browns are doing with Mayfield, and then added Ryan Tannehill in a trade. The long-time starter in Miami, Tannehill backed up Mariota in camp, but the Titans turned to him to start in Game 7 and then went on a run to the playoffs and onto the AFC Championship Game. Should the Browns consider adding a Tannehill type player? And if so, what potentially available veterans could fit that mold? Doug Lesmerises, Dan Labbe, Ashley Bastock, Scott Patsko and Mary Kay Cabot break that all down. Thanks for listening to the Orange and Brown Talk Podcast from cleveland.com. The Jameis Winston Baker Mayfield option: Going all-in with Mayfield in 2022 without an extension
A new podcast series starts today at the Orange and Brown Talk Podcast. Over the next several days, the crew will examine all the options the Browns could have with Baker Mayfield in 2022, not only when it comes to playing him, but what kind of other quarterbacks they may or may not surround him with. To start, Dan Labbe, Ashley Bastock, Mary Kay Cabot, Scott Patsko and Doug Lesmerises look at the Jameis Winston option, which it seems like the Browns are doing. That's keeping Mayfield as their QB in 2022 without having another real option on the roster. The crew discusses the pros, cons and history of that option; why it might fit the Browns; and then they rate how much they like this option. They'll do the same with four other options over the next several days. Thanks for listening to the Orange and Brown Talk Podcast from cleveland.com. Want to get involved in Football Insider? Andrew Berry expects Baker Mayfield to start in 2022, but is it guaranteed?
Browns general manager Andrew Berry held his end-of-season press conference on Tuesday and, in it, he said he expects Baker Mayfield to be the Browns starting quarterback in 2022 and he expects him to bounce back. Mary Kay Cabot, Ashley Bastock and Dan Labbe discussed Berry's postseason press conference in this edition of the Orange and Brown Talk Podcast. Would they be surprised if things change and someone else starts Week 1 of the 2022 season? What did they think of Berry's comments about Jarvis Landry and Kevin Stefanski's playcalling? Could the Browns add competition for Baker Mayfield? Hey, Mary Kay!
The Browns season ended in a disappointing 8-9 record this year. They now move into an offseason of uncertainty, especially when it comes to the quarterback position. Covering the Browns and Baker Mayfield in the social media era
Based off a tweet from Baker Mayfield directed at cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot, this episode dives into what it has been like covering Mayfield and the Browns the last few years. Cabot is joined by Dan Labbe, Ashley Bastock, Scott Patsko and Doug Lesmerises to talk about player-journalist relationships; why Mayfield's relationship with Cleveland media got off on the wrong foot due to no fault of his own; what it's like reporting a story over a full season; and what, if anything, Mayfield's tweet indicates about his future with the team. Winning solves everything, but in this frustrating season for the Browns, this moment felt like an opportunity to go a bit behind the scenes. How will the Browns get their offense going? Hey, Mary Kay!
The Browns offense continues to struggle, even after a strong first half on Sunday against the Ravens. Mary Kay Cabot answered questions from our Football Insider subscribers on today's Orange and Brown Talk Podcast about Baker Mayfield, Kevin Stefanski and, in the second half, all about the defense and how well it's playing.
